District College Football Recap – 11/13/2011

The PSAC title was determined, the race in the Northeast Conference is winding down and an upset of the number one team in Division I FCS play highlighted the weekend of college football around the area. Also closing out the season were the PAC teams, with Rivalry Week.

Here are recaps of all the games, check back later for information on the NCAA Division II and III playoff fields, which will be announced later today.

PSAC STATE TITLE GAME
Kutztown 21  –  Slippery Rock 14
The eighth ranked Golden Bears took the lead late and claimed the PSAC Championship with the home victory. The win will likely put Kutztown into the NCAA Division II playoff field, going in the Golden Bears were fifth in the regional rankings, the top six make the field which will be announced later today.

The 24th ranked Rock saw their season come to an end, SRU can only wonder what might have been, the Rock dropping two straight with a loss to Gannon in the regular season finale.

The day started well for SRU, taking the opening kickoff and going right down the field with an eleven play drive, Akeem Satterfield returned to the lineup and scored on a eight yard run. Kutztown answered on their second possession, Kevin Morton to Erik Frazier for a 41 yard touchdown and a tie score after one.

Kutztown suffered a big loss early in the second, Morton left the game, forcing backup QB Marshall Vogel to enter, Morton did not return. Slippery Rock had a chance to add to the lead, Kurt Brackman missed a 28 yard field goal attempt. Jack Ruggieri missed a 39 yard try on the final play of the half.

Slippery Rock took the lead in the third quarter, Cody Endres hit Devin Goda for a 28 yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead. The Rock thought they dodged a bullet when Jake Wickline intercepted a Vogel pass at the goal line on Kutztown’s next possession, it was Vogel‘s second turnover of the game, fumbling earlier in the quarter. Endres returned the favor, throwing his second pick of the game, setting Kutztown up at the Rock 18. Vogel would be true on this short drive, finding Josh Mastromatto for a 16 yard touchdown with six seconds left in the quarter.

The Rock had an opportunity to take back the lead on the first drive of the fourth, Brackman missed a 34 yard field goal with 10:02 remaining. Vogel gave Kutztown the lead, going to Frazier for a 14 yard touchdown and the lead.

Slippery Rock took over with 2:59 to play, needing a touchdown to tie. Endres drove the Rock to the Kutztown 32, including a fourth down completion to John Schademan, but missed on four straight passes to turn the ball over on downs and end the Rock season.

Satterfield ran 25 times for 103 yards, Endres threw for 233 yards on 19 of 39, Goda had six catches for 67 yards. The Rock finishes at 8-3.

Vogel was 25 of 39 in relief of Morton for 300 yards. Frazier had six catches for 97 yards. Kutztown is now 10-1 and will await their opponent in next week’s NCAA D-II playoffs, it is not clear if the Golden Bears will be at home or on the road in the opening round.  

W & J 24  –  Waynesburg 21
In the PAC Backyard Brawl, it wasn’t easy but W & J continues their dominance over Waynesburg with the win at Cameron Stadium. Eric Eberle kicked a 34 yard field goals on the final play as the Presidents picked up their 36th win in this series, compared to just three for Waynesburg.

In a tale of two halves, the Presidents jumped out to the early lead. QB Taylor Hockman, starting for the injured Matt Bliss, led W & J on an eleven play drive on their opening possession, Hockman to Alex Baroffio for a nine yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.  After a Waynesburg three play series, Hockman hooked up with Baroffio again for a 45 yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets drove to the Presidents 22 but Josh Graham was intercepted by B.J. Monacelli to end the threat.

The second quarter saw some turnovers, Eberle had a punt blocked by Matt Czulewicz, setting up Waynesburg at the W & J 36 but Betrand Ngampa fumbled on the first play to give the ball back to the Presidents. It took W & J just three plays to add to the lead, Hockman to Baroffio for 55 yards and a 21-0 advantage, Chris Marini missed a 28 yard field goal for the Yellow Jackets in the final minute of the half.

On the Presidents first possession of the second half, Eberle had his second punt blocked, this time by Tyler Fatigante, Waynesburg capitalized as Justin Falcon scored on a one yard run to cut the deficit to fourteen. Punting continued to be a problem for the Presidents, the snap over the punter’s head allowing Waynesburg to recover at the W & J 20. The Yellow Jackets scored three plays later as Graham hit Jeff Young for a 19 yard touchdown.

Waynesburg tied the game on the first play of the fourth quarter as Graham hit Adam Moses for a 14 yard touchdown. W & J drove the length of the field, getting to the Waynesburg 2, but Hockman could not get into the end zone on four consecutive quarterback sneaks. The Presidents took the football on the next possession down to the Waynesburg 11, but a bad snap over Hockman’s head and Eberle missed a 40 yard field goal, left the game tied with 4:21 remaining in regulation.

After Waynesburg blocked two W & J punt’s it was the Presidents turn, Dion Wiegand blocked Zack Rogers punt, setting up W & J at the Waynesburg 14 with just 2:15 remaining. The Presidents got down to the two on a twelve yard run by Tim McNerney, but then lost eleven yards on the next three plays, setting up Eberle’s game winning kick.

Barrofio had the big day for the Presidents, with ten catches for 207 yards. Hockman threw for 252 yards, he was sacked five times. The winning field goal for Eberle was his first of the season. W & J ends the season 6-4 overall and finishes 5-3 in the PAC.

Graham threw for 269 yards for the Yellow Jackets, he was picked off twice. Christian Jackson had seven catches for 103 yards, Moses and Young had five catches each. Waynesburg is now 5-4 overall and ends PAC play at 5-3.

Geneva 23  –  Westminster 10
For the 113th time, Geneva and Westminster met in what is called simply “The Game”, this time in New Wilmington. And for the 43rd time overall, the Golden Tornadoes went back down Route 18 to Beaver Falls with a victory, rallying from a 10-3 third quarter deficit.

Geneva took a 3-0 lead on their opening possession, Bryan Visengardi kicked a 36 yard field goal, he would miss a 33 yard attempt on the GT’s next drive. That score stayed the same thru the remainder of the half, Geneva had a fourteen play drive to end the half to the Westminster 1. Electing to go for it on fourth and goal, Rocco Colavecchia was stopped for no gain and the half ended.

Westminster tied the game in the third, Zac Henry kicked a 31 yard field goal, the Titans took the lead four plays later when Dom Saragusa fumbled, J.J. Nalesnik returned the fumble 65 yards for a Titan touchdown and a 10-3 advantage. Geneva answered with another long drive, twelve plays and eighty yards with Zack Hayward tossing an eight yard td pass to Colavecchia, tying the game at ten. Westminster turned the ball over on their third play of the following drive, Tyler Banks fumbled, Jon Bushmire recovered and took the ball 28 yards on the return to the Westminster 33 to end the quarter.

The GT’s capitalized on the turnover, Visengardi kicked a 26 yard field goal with 13:32 left for a 13-10 advantage. Geneva pulled away with a Hayward twenty yard touchdown pass to Jordan Curry and a 17 yard Visengardi field goal with just under three minutes to play. Westminster drove to the Geneva 5, but Shawn Lehocky was sacked on fourth down to turn the ball back to the Golden Tornado.

Geneva pounded out 247 yards on the ground, Colavecchia had 185 yards on 27 carries. Hayward threw for 125 yards and the two scores. Geneva ends the season 4-6 overall and 4-4 in the PAC.

Westminster managed just 166 yards of offense, Lehocky threw for 126 yards. The Titans finish up 5-5 overall, and 4-4 in the conference.

Youngstown State 27 – North Dakota State 24
The Penguins go on the road to Fargo and defeat the number one team in the FCS. Kurt Hess threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns on 20 of 24 and Jamaine Cook ran for 147 yards as the Penguins go to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the MVC.

David Brown put YSU up with a 33 yard field goal in the first quarter, North Dakota State took a 14-3 lead in the second on two Sam Ojuri touchdown runs. Hess led the Penguins on a ten play drive, hitting Jelani Berassa for a twelve yard score. Hess has now thrown td passes in ten straight games. D.J. McNorton extended the NDSU lead with a two yard run, but Hess scored on a yard run with 17 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to four at the break.

The Penguins took the lead on a Hess td pass to Cook of ten yards. Ryan Jastram kicked a 24 yard field goal to knot the game at 24 midway thru the third. Brown kicked his second field goal of the game with 2:49 left in the third to put YSU up to stay.

Ojuri had 104 yards rushing, the YSU defense shut down the Bison attack, holding them to just 133 yards passing. North Dakota State is now 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the MVC.

The Penguins play host to Missouri State in the home finale next week at the Ice Castle, YSU still has a chance to make the FCS field in two weeks.

Bryant 45  –  Saint Francis 34
Jordan Brown rushed for 243 yards and three touchdowns, Mike Croce threw for 278 yards and three scores as the Bulldogs won at home to keep pace in the NEC. Croce’s 23 yard touchdown pass to Jordan Harris clinched the win, after the Red Flash pulled within four on a five yard touchdown run by A.J. Alexander.
Bryant is 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the NEC.

John Kelly threw for 216 yards and three touchdowns for the Red Flash. Alexander had four catches for 114 yards. Kyle Harbridge had only one carry for five yards, Harbridge entered the game leading the FCS in rushing with 1,425 yards. In his absence, Keion Wade ran 23 times for 134 yards. Saint Francis is 2-9 overall, 1-7 in the conference.

Duquense 29  –  Sacred Heart 15
Sean Patterson and Connor Dixon connected for two touchdowns as the Dukes hold pace with Albany for the NEC lead at 6-1. Larry McCoy added 149 yards rushing and two touchdowns, Duquesne is 8-2 overall, winners of four straight.

Dixon has caught a pass in 25 straight games, since moving from quarterback to wide receiver. The grad student from South Park made six catches for 95 yards, giving him 35 catches for the season with 13 touchdowns.

Greg Moore scored the only offensive touchdown for Sacred Heart on a 13 yard run. Defensive lineman Justin Embler recovered a fumble in the end zone and the Pioneers got a safety. Sacred Heart is 5-3 overall, 3-2 in the conference.

The Dukes will need Albany to lose next week at home to Sacred Heart, Albany defeated Monmouth 41-24 Saturday. Duquesne plays host to Robert Morris last week, the Dukes must win to have any shot at a FCS bid.

Wagner 38  –  Robert Morris 17
The woes continue for the Colonials this season, one year after winning the NEC and gaining the berth to the FCS playoffs. Domonique Williams ran for 216 yards and three touchdowns as the Seahawks led 24-3 in the fourth quarter.

Freshman QB Matt Layton made his first career start for the injured Jeff Sinclair, he threw for only 70 yards on 6 of 16 before being knocked out in the third quarter. Former Laurel star Tyler Forbes came on and led RMU to a touchdown with a 38 yard touchdown pass to Jaime Cobb. Two series later, Forbes was hit and fumbled and Quintin Anderson returned the fumble 48 yards for a touchdown. Forbes moved the Colonials into scoring position again, setting up his high school rival Deontae Howard of Clairton for a one yard touchdown. Forbes threw for 140 yards, but committed two turnovers and was sacked three times. Shadrae King had eight catches for 76 yards, he has caught at least one pass in 29 straight games.

Wagner is 3-7 overall, 3-4 in the conference. Robert Morris has lost five straight games to fall to 2-8 overall and 2-5 in the NEC.

East Stroudsburg 27 – Edinboro 26
Ray Wagner hit Dusty Reed for a 21 yard touchdown on the game’s final play to give the Warriors the upset win at home. Edinboro led 23-6 in the third quarter on touchdown runs by D’Andrea Vaughn and Michael Battles. Kenny Pettis returned an interception thirty yards for a touchdown to put the Fighting Scots up with 5:08 left in the third.

Eric Deery scored on a ten yard run in the third and K. Williams on a one yard run early in the fourth. Edinboro had a chance to put the game away, Brian Davis fumbled into the end zone with 1:53 remaining, ESU drove 80 yards for the winning score.

Cody Harris was 21 of 29 for 234 yards for Edinboro, before leaving the game late in the third quarter. David Bostic had eleven catches for 91 yards. The Fighting Scots finish 7-4. Deery led the Warriors with eleven carries for 106 yards. Reed had seven catches for 98 yards. Wagner threw for 215 yards on 20 of 39. The Warriors finish 3-8.

Shippensburg 40  –  Mercyhurst 16
The Lakers led 16-13 in the third quarter but never scored again. WR Trevor Kennedy had twelve catches for 109 yards, he ended the day with 302 all-purpose yards. Kennedy is a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, awarded to the top player in D-II. Allan Jones ran for 80 yards, Richie Sanders scored both Laker touchdowns. Mercyhurst finishes 4-7, one year after winning the PSAC title.

Shippensburg got 179 yards passing and three touchdowns from Zach Zulli, two to Trevor Harman, Mike Frenette ran for 112 yards and two scores. The Red Raiders finish 7-4. 

California 43  –  Cheyney 3
The 18th ranked Vulcans did nothing to hurt their post-season chances with a convincing road win in cross-over action. Cal was ranked fourth in last week’s regional poll and will find out if a fifth straight NCAA berth is offered this afternoon.

Peter Lalich threw a career high five touchdown passes in the win, he threw for 252 yards on 15 of 22. Chedrick Cherry had five catches for 129 yards and two scores. Blake Williamson, Lamont Smith and Mario Washington also had td catches, Thomas Mulabah returned a fumble for a score. The Cal defense only allowed 172 yards on the afternoon.

Cal is now 9-2 overall, Cheyney ends the season at 1-10, the lone win coming in the opener.

Clarion 34  –  Millersville 20
Patrick Graham-Murphy continued his late season success, running for a school record 266 yards on 35 carries and five touchdowns in the road win. The junior from Brashear moved into the backfield four games ago after starting at corner in the first seven games of the season.

Graham-Murphy scored on runs of 79, 3, 16, 10 and 50 yards, the final coming with 3:32 remaining in the game. Marquis White had a good day for Millersville, running for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Clarion threw the ball only six times as third team quarterback Anthony Omogrosso got the call and went the distance. Both teams end the season at 3-8 overall.

IUP 34  –  West Chester 7
Harvie Tuck ran for 134 yards and a touchdown as IUP picked up the road win. Pat Smith hit Pat Brewer for a 14 yard touchdown to open the scoring in the first, West Chester answered with a Sean McCartney seven yard touchdown to LaRon Lee.

It would be all IUP from then on, James Johnson scored on a 19 yard run, Mike Box came on at quarterback and hit Ben Simmen for a four yard touchdown, Brett Ullman kicked his second field goal late in the first half, and Tuck closed the scoring with a two yard run.

Johnson added 78 yards on fifteen carries, both quarterbacks were efficient, Box was 9 of 13, Smith 5 of 6. The IUP defense held West Chester to 193 yards. IUP finishes 7-3, West Chester 5-6.

Bloomsburg 34  –  Lock Haven 3
The Huskies look to hold to the final spot in the regional poll, Bloomsburg was ranked sixth entering the week and looking to gain an NCAA bid after dropping two straight games.

Huskies QB Pat Carey ran for a score and threw for another. Franklyn Quiteh and Eddie Mateo are 1-2 in the PSAC in rushing, both going over one thousand yards for the season, both went over 100 yards, Mateo with 136 yards and a touchdown, Quiteh with 120. Bloomsburg finished the regular season at 9-2, the Huskies fell from #2 in the polls two weeks ago to #21.

Brandon Brader ran for 122 yards on 34 carries, the Bald Eagles suffered their 42 consecutive loss, the longest streak in PSAC history and the longest current streak in any level of NCAA football.

C.W. Post 33  –  Gannon 15
The Golden Knights jumped out to a 10-0 lead, but could not hold the Pioneers offense down. Anthony Brunetti ran for two touchdowns. Brothers Steve and Grayson Laurino connected on the afternoon. QB Steve threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns, Grayson caught six passes, one for a score. The Pioneers end the season 7-4.

Janson Jones scored the only touchdown for Gannon, Khayree Connors had a defensive two-point conversion for the Golden Knights, who finish 4-7.

Glenville State 63  –  Seton Hill 44
The Griffins led 24-20 at the break but could not hold on for the win at Offut Field. D.J. Lenehan threw for 293 yards and five touchdowns. Jeorge Valdovinos had seven catches for 143 yards and three scores. Seton Hill finishes at 1-10 overall and 1-7 in the WVIAC.

Steffan Colon threw for 293 yards and six touchdowns. Jordan Griffin had six catches for 128 yards. Joe Mesadieu ran for 114 yards on 20 carries. Glenville State finished 5-6 overall and 5-3 in the WVIAC.

Saint Vincent 20  –  Bethany 14
In the Green Game, the Bearcats continued their record breaking season, with the first win over the Bison in five tries. Saint Vincent finished 6-4 overall, the most wins for the Bearcats since the program’s return in 2007 and the best season overall since 1957.

Saint Vincent used defense to get on the board first, David Ribero took a Matt Grimard pass 38 yards for a Pick 6 and a 7-0 lead midway thru the first quarter. That lead lasted all of eleven seconds, Ed Holmes took the ensuing kickoff 82 yards to the house to tie the game.

It stayed that way until the third quarter, Huey Ehredt scored on a 17 yard run to give Saint Vincent back the lead, Bethany tied it in the fourth on a Grimard 51 yard pass to David Powell, but Ehredt scored on a 13 yard run for Saint Vincent with 9:33 remaining. Bethany had a drive late, getting to the Saint Vincent 15 but Dan Wirkowski picked off Grimard at the goal line to end the threat.

Ehredt ran thirteen times for 116 yards and the two scores. The Bearcats finish 5-3 in the PAC.

Grimard threw for 195 yards, he ran for 53 on 22 carries. Eric Walker had eleven carries for 58 yards, he needs 36 yards in next week’s match up at home with King’s College to become the all-time leading rusher at Bethany. Next week’s game was postponed from earlier in the season due to heavy flooding in Wilkes Barre. The Bison are 4-5 overall, they finish PAC play at 3-5.

Grove City 35  –  Thiel 3
The Wolverines rolled to their fifth straight Mercer County Cup, with all of the scoring taking place in the first half. Blaine Miller scored three times, running for 129 yards on 32 carries. Jimmy Bailey added 55 yards and a score for Grove City, Brian Pell was 11-17 for 110 yards and a touchdown.

The Wolverine defense forced five turnovers and held Thiel to just 67 yards rushing. Grove City ends 3-7 overall and 3-5 in the PAC. Thiel got only a Cody McClellan 31 yard field goal, the Tomcats take a 22 game losing streak into 2012, finishing 0-10 for the second straight year.

Oberlin 14 – Allegheny 13
Zachery Kisley’s interception with less than a minute to play gave the Yeomen the win in Meadville. Allegheny led 13-0 early in the third quarter on two Ryan Zipf field goals and a Jordan Fowler 6 yard touchdown pass to Max Kauert.

Oberlin made the comeback, Josh Mandel threw two touchdown passes in the third quarter, 15 yards to Robin Witjes and 11 yards to Adam Nies. Zipf missed two field goals, one late in the third, the other with 9:14 remaining that would have given the Gators the lead.

Fowler finished 26 of 44 for 206 yards, Sean Griffin and Derek Emigh each had two catches. The Gators defense held the Yeoman to minus twenty yards rushing.

Allegheny finishes 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC. Oberlin ends up 3-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Case Western Reserve 38  –  Carnegie Mellon 24
Chris Garcia staked CMU to a 7-0 lead in the 26th annual Academic Bowl, but Case Western Reserve scored the final 21 points of the first half on the way to the win in Pittsburgh. Kenny Riorden scored on runs of 56 and 11 yards. Manny Sicre added a seven yard run.

Case QB Erik Olsen threw two touchdown passes to Bryan Metlesitz. Rob Kalkstein hit Jake Nardone for a two yard touchdown for the Tartans, backup QB Seth Napierkowski connected with Eric Dissenger for a 20 yard touchdown in the final minute.

Riordan ran for 108 yards on 16 carries. Sicre added 86 yards on 17 totes. Case Western Reserve is 9-1 overall and wins the UAA with a 3-0 mark. CMU was held to just 68 yards rushing, the Tartans end the season at 5-5 and 1-2 in league play.
