The West Allegheny Indians have lost only twice so far in 2012 – that’s the good news.  The bad news is that both defeats have come against section rival Montour Spartans.  For the second time in two weeks, the Montour Spartans topped the Indians, this time by the score of 6-3.

Montour senior Kaitlyn Kutchman led the way by pitching seven strong innings and striking out nine Indians as well as by crushing a long solo home run, against the wind, to left field.  That home run tied the game at three in the bottom of the 3rd inning.

The Spartans got on the board first in their half of the opening inning when Stacey Capp and Megan Vacco led off with singles.  One out later, Allison Hryadil singled to load the bases and then Stephanie Seibert laced a two-out, two-run double to give the Spartans the early lead.

West Allegheny roared back in the top of the third by scoring three runs against Kutchman.  Allison Gerhart led off the inning by reaching on an infield error and came around to score when Ashley Hurey doubled over the head of the Montour leftfielder, Olivia Dixon.  Brittany Ziegler then reached on another Montour error.  Hurey and Allie Hamilton (Ziegler’s courtesy runner) then came around to score on a single by Amanda Murray.

The Spartans would score the deciding final three runs in the bottom of the 5th inning as they benefitted from five walks in the inning given up by Indian pitcher Bri Lach.  Sophomore Mallory Gerst had the big hit in the inning as she drove in two runs with a single.

With the win, the Montour Spartans run their record to 6-2, 10-5.  West Allegheny’s record falls to 4-2, 8-2.
