District College Football Recap for Saturday, October 13th

As the college football season continues, the conference races begin to become a little clearer. This week Mercyhurst and Cal post wins as they look forward to a battle for the PSAC West title. Waynesburg stays on top of the PAC standings. and Duquesne takes a huge hit in their bid to repeat as NEC champions.
Here are recaps of All the games:
Slippery Rock 28 – Clarion 20
The Rock ended a 3 game losing streak and claimed the Milk Jug for a 4th straight year with the win at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Nigel Barksdale threw for 2 scores and ran for a third for the Rock in the win.
Slippery Rock scored on the second possession of the game, Jaimire Dutireuille took a 14 yard pass from Barksdale and the Rock led 7-0. Clarion had a chance to answer but a long drive ended on downs at the Rock 9 yard line. The Rock added to the lead on the first drive of the 2nd quarter, Barksdale scoring on a 2 yard run as the Rock went 88 yards in 9 plays. Again Clarion drove deep into SRU territory but turned the ball over on downs at the Rock 24. The Golden Eagles finally capitalized late in the half, Ben Fiscus to Nick Perry for a 7 yard touchdown, the extra point was blocked so the Rock led 14-6 at the half.
SRU added to the lead again in the 3rd, another long drive for the Rock, going 11 plays and 80 yards, Brett Crenshaw scoring from 2 yards to put the Rock up 21-6. For the third time in the game, Clarion came up empty on a drive, Nathan Conway missed a 41 yard field goal and the Rock led by 15 after 3.
The Rock took advantage of the miss, Barksdale hit Ken Amos for a 55 yard pass, setting up a pass to Josh Gardner for a 3 yard touchdown. Fiscus led a scoring drive for Clarion, helped by 2 Rock pass interference calls, Travis Day scored from 2 yards with 7:17 left in regulation, to make it 28-12. Barksdale was intercepted by Jason Peterson at the Clarion 26, Fiscus scored 5 plays later from 11 yards out to make it 28-20 with 2:55 left.
The onside kick attempt was recovered by the Rock, Clarion was out of timeouts and SRU ran out the clock for the win. Barksdale finished 19-26 for 257, Amos had 6 catches for 101 yards. Slippery Rock is now 3-4 overall and 2-2 in PSAC West play.
Fiscus threw for 287 yards on 21-48, he ran for 68 yards on 18 carries. Aaron Barlow had 7 catches for the Golden Eagles, now 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC West.
W & J 24 – Westminster 21
The Presidents got back into the win column with a W over an old rival on Saturday at Cameron Stadium. Matt Bliss threw for 312 yards and a touchdown, he also ran for a score in the win.
The Titans scored on the opening drive of the game, QB Dak Britt going in from 8 yards to put the Titans up early. Bliss tied the game late in the 1st with a 15 yard touchdown pass to Hunter Creel.
W & J took advantage of a botched punt in the 2nd, converting the turnover into an Eric Eberle 26 yard field goal. The teams exchanged possessions before Westminster took the lead back with a Britt 61 yard run and a 14-10 lead with 3:27 left before the half.
The Presidents took back the lead in the 3rd, Dion Wiegand scored on a 2 yard run, capping a 7 play 63 yard drive. Bliss led another long drive to start the 4th, going 10 plays and 65 yards, Bliss scored from 3 yards out to put W & J up by 10. Britt was not done, he capitalized on a drive of his own, hitting Collin Wallace for a 25 yard touchdown with 3:33 left to cut the score to 24-21. But W & J was able to move the sticks twice before giving the ball to Westminster with just 16 seconds left and 94 yards to go. The Titans could not move the ball and the Presidents claimed the win.
Bliss was 25 of 44 on the day, Creel had 8 catches for 128 yards. Wiegand ran for 79 yards on 26 carries. W & J is now 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the PAC, one game back of Waynesburg.
Britt threw for 158 yards and ran for 96. Wallace had 4 catches for 104 yards. Westminster is now 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the PAC.
Geneva 30 – Saint Vincent 22
Rocco Colavecchia ran for 2 touchdowns and threw for another as the Golden Tornadoes pick up the road win at Chuck Noll Field and keep Saint Vincent winless on the season.
The senior from Shenango put the GT’s on the board in the first quarter with a 1 yard run. That score held true until the 2nd, when Colavecchia scored from 4 yards to put Geneva up 14-0. Saint Vincent botched a punt deep in their own territory and Geneva turned that into a Bryan Visingardi 22 yard field goal.
Saint Vincent got on the board with a 10 play drive, Matt Deakins to Matt Duffey for an 8 yard touchdown to make it 17-6. The Bearcats weren’t done, Zach Hayward was picked off by Renny Larue-Holloman at the 27 and set up Saint Vincent at the Geneva 3. The Bearcats could not score in 3 cracks, Morgan Porter kicked a 20 yard field goal with 1:12 left in the half. Hayward made up for the interception by getting Geneva into field goal range, Visingardi hit from 32 yards on the final play of the half.
The Bearcats forced a fumble on the first drive of the 3rd quarter, Deakins took advantage, hitting Ryan Crawford for a 24 yard touchdown, the two point try failed, leaving Geneva on top 20-15. Geneva turned to the ground game and a true freshman at that as Dylan Jones, the all time leading rusher at Laurel, took over and ripped off 44 yards on 6 carries, Colavecchia finished by connecting with Josh Guiser for a 2 yard score.
Saint Vincent answered, Andy Borgen scored on a 50 yard run to cut the lead to 5 again. This time Colavecchia took over and led the GT’s to another Visingardi field goal of 37 yards, making the score 30-22. The Bearcats had a chance in the 4th, Jones fumbled, giving Saint Vincent the ball at the 30, but Deakins was intercepted by Thomas Benyo to end the threat.
Colavecchia carried 20 times for 91 yards, he threw for 36 yards. Jones carried 12 times for 71 yards, Hayward was 18-29 for 174. Geneva is now 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the PAC.
Borgen carried 8 timed for 84 yards for the Bearcats. Saint Vincent falls to 0-6 and 0-4 in the PAC.
California 30 – Lock Haven 0
The 15th ranked Vulcans cruised to the home win at Adamson Stadium and handed the Bald Eagles their 49th consecutive loss. Cody Schroeder made his first college start and threw for 3 touchdowns in the win.
Schroeder started the scoring with a 68 yard td pass to Kowan Scott in the 1st quarter and hit R.J. Thomas with a 10 yard strike on the first play of the 2nd for a 14-0 lead. Cody Nuzzo hit three field goals, one in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd to put Cal up 23-0. Schroeder finished the scoring by connecting with Mike Williams for a 6 yard touchdown early in the 4th.
Schroeder finished 20-29 for 252 yards. Lamont Smith ran 21 times for 18 yards, Cody Cook added 108 yards on 16 carries. The Cal defense held Lock Haven to just 3 yards rushing.
Cal is now 6-1 overall and tied with Mercyhurst at 4-0 in the PSAC West.
Lock Haven is now 0-7, adding to the longest current losing streak on any level of NCAA football.
Mercyhurst 38 – Gannon 29
The battle for the city of Erie was taken by the Lakers on Saturday, as Mercyhurst remains perfect in PSAC West play and picked up their 6th straight win.
Mercyhurst led 14-0 after one on an Anthony Vendemia pass to Devyn Woods for 16 yards and a Vendemia 1 yard run. Liam Nadler got Gannon on the board with a 14 yard pass to Donny Mallin, Justin Caliste tied the game 66 seconds later on a 65 yard punt return. That didn’t last long as L.J. Stevens returned the kickoff back 83 yards for a touchdown. Vendemia scored on a yard run with 13 seconds left to put Mercyhurst up by 14 at the break.
After a Steven Wakefield field goal for the Lakers, Nadler hit the bomb to Abraham Ocasio for 82 yards, Brandon Brown-Dukes answered with a 37 yard run and Mercyhurst led 38-21 after 3. Nadler hit Ocasio on the next to last play of the game for a 24 yard touchdown and the final margin.
Brown-Dukes ran 30 times for 192 yards, Vendemia only threw for 146 yards. Mercyhurst is 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the PSAC West.
Nadler was 25-42 for 428 yards, Occasio had 4 catches for 147 yards, Jansen Jones made 4 grabs for 100. Quad Law had 8 receptions for the Golden Knights, now 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the PSAC West.
IUP 26 – Edinboro 10
Harvie Tuck continued his dominance over PSAC defenses, running for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns as the 22nd ranked Crimson Hawks sit just one game back of Cal and Mercyhurst for the top spot in the PSAC West.
Tuck opened the scoring with a 2 yard run, set up by a Jerrin McFadden interception of Cody Harris. Harris answered with a 19 play drive, lasting 8 minutes, hitting Seth Hembree for the 6 yard touchdown. Sean Seefeldt gave the Fighting Scots the lead in the 2nd with a 39 yard field goal.
But IUP turned the offense on again. Mike Box scores on a yard run, Brett Ullman added a 39 yard field goal to put IUP up 16-10 at the half. Ullman booted another field goal in the third to make it 19-10, Tuck capped the scoring with a 31 yard run with 8 minutes remaining.
IUP is now 6-1 overall. Edinboro falls to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the PSAC West, Harris was held to 185 yards passing, he was picked twice and sacked 5 times.
Waynesburg 23 – Bethany 21
The Yellow Jackets rallied from a 21-7 deficit to keep the hopes of a PAC title alive and remain undefeated on the season at 7-0.
Bethany jumped out in the second quarter, Matt Grimard hit Ed Holmes with an 11 yard touchdown pass to make it 9-0 after a Justin Evans first quarter field goal. Bertrand Ngampa answered with a 53 yard run to cut the Bison lead to 2, but Grimard scored on a yard run with 9 seconds left in the half to go up 15-7 at the break.
Grimard hooked up with Holmes again for a 25 yard touchdown on the opening drive of the third and the Bison was poised for the upset. But Waynesburg would start the comeback, Dominic Moore with a 2 yard run in the third and Ngampa scored on a 14 yard run with 11:59 remaining to cut the lead to 21-20, the Yellow Jackets could have tied the game with the extra point but it was blocked.
Bethany drove to the Waynesburg 29 on the next drive but turned the ball over on downs, Waynesburg drove into field goal range but Domenic Zappa missed a 36 yard field goal with 3:33 remaining. The Yellow Jackets defense allowed one first down but held and Waynesburg got the ball back with 1:45 remaining and no timeouts. The Yellow Jackets turned to Ngampa again, he ripped off gains of 15 and 35 yards to put Waynesburg in business at the 10 yard line. With :18 left, Alex Henry, the regular kicker came on and hit a 26 yard field goal to win in for Waynesburg.
Ngampa ran for 206 yards on 19 carries and the 2 scores. Moore added 97 yards on 24 carries. Waynesburg is now 5-0 in the PAC.
Grimard was 25-40 for 261 yards for Bethany, now 1-5. Johnathan Foster had 10 catches, Holmes made 8 for 121 yards. The Bison are now 1-3 in the PAC.
Thomas More 28 – Thiel 16
The Saints led 21-3 at the half and held off a late Tomcats charge for the win at the Bank of Kentucky Stadium. Jenson Gebhardt hit Cody Hinkle for a touchdown in the first quarter, scored on a yard run in the second and connected with Mercier Doucett for a 33 yard touchdown for that lead at the break.
Andrew Smith tried to lead a comeback for Thiel, hitting Rich Smallwood for an 11 yard touchdown in the 3rd and running for a 8 yard score in the 4th. But Adam Rauch ended those hopes with a 4 yard run with 1:28 remaining to give the Saints the win.
Thomas More is now 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the PAC, Thiel falls to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Concord 29 – Seton Hill 26
Evan Dusold hit Derrick Williams for a 10 yard touchdown with 5:20 remaining in regulation for the win.
Seton Hill led 13-0 in the second, Andrew Jackson hit Niko Hall-Brown for a 14 yard touchdown and Mike Allen for a 45 yard score. Calvinaugh Jones scored midway thru the 2nd on a 16 yard run. Jackson hit Lance Williams for a 20-7 lead, the touchdown covered 31 yards. Ben Nestor scored from 2 yards out and Seton Hill led 20-14 at the break.
Jackson and Allen hooked up again in the 3rd, a 10 yard passing play and a 26-14 lead. But the Mountain Lions took over the game. Dusold to Ansel Porter with 6:49 left in regulation cut the lead to 5, then the Dusold to Williams strike to put Concord up for good.
Dusold threw for 223 yards, Jones ran for 123 yards. Concord is now 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the WVIAC.
Jackson had 265 yards passing and 4 touchdowns. Hall-Brown had 8 catches for 134 yards. Seton Hill falls to 0-7.
Central Connecticut State 38 – Duquesne 31
The Dukes saw their chance of repeating as NEC champs go up in smoke with the upset by the previously winless Blue Devils. Duquesne played without their leading rushing Larry McCoy.
Andrew Clements staked CCSU to a 17-0 lead in the 2nd quarter with touchdown runs of 1 and 7 yards. Ryan Ho scored on a 2 yard run to make the score 17-7 at the break.
Duquesne tied the game in the 3rd quarter, Sean Patterson hit Sean Brady for a 5 yard touchdown, Charlie Leventry kicked a 30 yard field goal, but Clements hit Devin Baker for a touchdown and CCSU led 24-17 after 3. Nate Pagan scored in the opening minute of the 4th on a 14 yard run, Ho notched his 2nd score of the game on a 18 yard pass from Patterson, but Rob Holloman scored on a 29 yard run for the Blue Devils for a 38-24 lead, Brady hooked with Patterson for a 2nd time, a 25 yard touchdown but the Dukes got no closer.
Ho, subbing for McCoy, ran for 114 yards. Gianni Carter had 7 catches for 93 yards. Duquesne is now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Holloman carried 23 times for 164 yards. Clements threw for 188 on 14-22 and ran for 83 yards. The Blue Devils are now 1-5 and 1-2 in the NEC.
Albany 36 – Saint Francis 13
The Red Flash led 10-0, but the Great Danes scored the next 29 points and held Saint Francis to just 68 yards in the 2nd half to go to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the NEC.
Keion Wade staked the Red Flash to that lead with a 53 yard run. But Drew Smith scored on a 3 yard run for Albany, Josh Thiel kicked his 2nd field goal to make it 13-6, but Smith added another 3 yard run and Albany got a field goal on the final play of the half to make it 16-13 Great Danes at the break.
Jake Meek scored on a 7 yard run, Smith added a 10 yard run in the 3rd and Meek a 38 yard run in the 4th capped the scoring and the game.
Wade ran for 106 yards for the Red Flash, who fall to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the NEC.
Bryant 38 – Robert Morris 35
Mike Westerhaus threw his 4th touchdown pass of the game to Jordan Harris with under 6 minutes to play to end a Bryant 7 game losing streak.
Jeff Sinclair opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to Duane Mitchell, Westerhaus answered with a short pass to Mike Perry and a tie game after 1. Jordan Brown scored on a 43 yard run to put Bryant up 16-7, but Sinclair hit Mitchell for a 15 yard touchdown, RMU trailed by 2 at the break.
Sinclair put the Colonials up with a 2 yard run in the 3rd, but Westerhaus answered with a touchdown to Ricardo McCray for 43 yards, the 2 pointer made it 24-21 Bryant, but Nick Groat gave the Colonials back the lead with a 5 yard run 28-24 after 3.
Westerhaus and Harris connected for a 10 yard touchdown on the first play of the 4th quarter to put Bryant back up, on the next Bryant possession, linebacker Brad Banas stepped in front of a Westerhaus pass and took it 55 yards for a Pick 6 and a 35-31 lead but the Colonial defense could not contain the Westerhaus-Harris connection and they hit for the final score.
Evan Taylor ran for 105 yards on 18 carries for RMU, Sinclair threw for 209 yards. RMU is now 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the NEC.
Brown had 131 yards on 25 carries, Westerhaus was 22-35 for 350 yards, Harris had 10 catches for 201 yards. Bryant moves to 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the NEC.
Allegheny 22 – DePauw 20
Colin Hartford intercepted a game-tying 2 point conversion attempt after Justin Murray scored with 37 seconds remaining to give the Gators the win and keep their NCAC hopes alive.
Allegheny led 10-0 in the first on a Ryan Mong 22 yard field goal and a Derrick Emigh pass from Mike Person for 8 yards. Mong added a 23 yard field goal and the Gators led 13-0. Murray connected with Bobby Coburn with 2:20 left in the half from 11 yards to cut the Gator lead to 6 at the break.
Murray hit Connor Jefferies for a 5 yard touchdown to take the lead after 3, but Tim Werley scored on a 8 yard run after a very short punt and a return from Emigh set the Gators up. The Gators had a chance to put the game away on the next possession but Werley fumbled, but the defense came threw, Rudy DeStefano intercepted a Murray pass and took it 72 yards to the 8 yard line, Mong kicked a 22 yard field goal to put the Gators up 8 with 8:06 left. Both teams exchanced punts and DePauw took the ball back with 3:48 left. Murray was able to score, but Hartford made the play on the two-pointer.
DePauw could not recover the onside kick and the Gators come out with the win. Worley ran 23 times for 96 yards for Allegheny, now 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference. DePauw is now 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the NCAC.
