District College Football Recap for Saturday, October 9th

Week six of the local college football season saw some fantastic finishes, points galore in at least two contests and several streaks continue or come to an end. Here are recaps from all the games, including those heard here on the MSA Sports Network:

Slippery Rock 28 – Edinboro 14

The Rock defense pitched a shutout in the second half to knock off the 24th ranked Fighting Scots at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium/Bob DiSpirito Field on Saturday night. Akeem Satterfield carried forty times for 147 yards, he scored four touchdowns, giving him eleven for the year. With the win, the Rock sets up a matchup for the division lead next week at fourth ranked Cal. Slippery Rock is tied with IUP and Mercyhurst at 2-1 in the division, the Rock has lost to IUP and travels on Mercyhurst on October 30th.

The first quarter was back and forth, the Rock took the opening kickoff and scored, Satterfield into the end zone from seven yards out with 11:34 remaining. Cody Harris led Edinboro on an eleven play drive, Harris to David Bostic from three out to tie the game at seven. After a SRU three and out, Edinboro took the lead on a two yard run by D'Andrea Vaughn late in the first.

It was a scoreless second quarter, the Fighting Scots had a chance to extend the lead but Alex Romainias was wide left on a 45 yard attempt on the final play of the half.

Satterfield dominated the third quarter, scoring on runs of four and one yards to give SRU back the lead at 21-14. Edinboro drove down the field and came up just short, Robert Doiley stripping Josh Brown of the football at the one yard line, Doiley fell on the football in the end zone for a touchback, giving Slippery Rock the football. The turnover set up a twelve play eighty yard drive, Satterfield scoring from a yard out to put the Rock up fourteen.

For Slippery Rock, in addition to Satterfield's performance, quarterback Ryan Sabo threw for 192 yards on 17 of 23, Devin Goda added eight catches for 75 yards and freshman quarterback, turned receiver Michael Bongivengo had three catches. The Rock is now 5-1 and looks to move up in both the regional and national rankings.

Edinboro falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in divisional play. Harris was 23 of 34 for 247 yards, he was sacked five times. The Fighting Scots had two turnovers, the Rock had none.

Washington & Jefferson 31 – Saint Vincent 20

The Presidents jumped out to a 17-0 lead and withstood a late Bearcat rally for the victory at Cameron Stadium. W & J had 402 yards of offense and almost evenly balanced with 191 yards on the ground and 211 thru the air.

Alex Baroffino caught an eight yard pass from Gino Rometo to start the scoring. Colin Kracinovsky kicked a 21 yard field goal and Tim McNerney added a five yard run to stake the Presidents to the lead early in the second quarter.

Saint Vincent got on the board on a Aaron Smetanka 32 yard pass to Tom Quirin, making it 17-7. W & J took just over two minutes to go back up seventeen, Rometo to Jordan Roycroft from twenty yards out.

In the third quarter, Smetanka found Sheldon Loughner for an eight yard touchdown to cut the lead to 24-14. Rometo fired his third touchdown pass of the day to Adam Dominick from seven yards, to make it 31-14. That score held up until Smetanka connected with Christian Sutton from 35 yards with 2:58 remaining the game.

Rometo threw for 211 yards, he was picked twice. McNerney ran for 131 yards on 29 carries. Roycroft caught seven passes for eighty yards. W & J turned the ball over three times, the Presidents are now 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the Presidents Athletic Conference.

Smetanka was 28 of 39 for 282 yards, Quirin and Ricky Douglas each caught seven passes, Sutton had six catches. Saint Vincent falls to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the PAC.

Waynesburg 55 – Geneva 42

In a game that saw 97 points, 55 first downs and an a yard shy of eleven hundred yards of offense, the Yellow Jackets prevailed at Reeves Field, handing the Golden Tornadoes their third home loss.

It was fourteen all after one quarter, Gerald Muschette scored both touchdowns for Geneva on a 16 yard run and a nine yard pass from David Girardi. Brad Dawson threw a seven yard pass to Adam Moses and Bertrand Ngampa scored on an eight yard run for Waynesburg.

The Yellow Jackets pulled away in the second quarter, Dawson hooked up with Moses again for a 13 yard score to make it 21-14. Muschette scored his third touchdown on a 16 yard run to tie it at 21, but Waynesburg added ten points in the final 2:53, Kyle Kyper kicked a 25 yard field goal and Dawson caught a five yard pass from Ryan Williams with seven seconds remaining to put the Yellow Jackets up 31-21.

Waynesburg started the third right where they left off, Dawson to Jeff Young for 57 yards and Matt Czulewicz scored on a one yard plunge to make it 45-21. Muschette caught a seven yard pass from Girardi for his fourth touchdown, he added a two point conversion run to make the score 45-29 after three.

After a Kyper field goal, Muschette broke loose with a 75 yard run, making it 48-35. Ngampa answered with a 64 yard run, Zach Hayward scored late for Geneva on a seven yard run.

Dawson ends 19 of 30 for 336 yards. Young had five catches for 125 yards, Ngampa had 83 yards rushing. Waynesburg is now 3-2 overall.

In addition to the five touchdowns, Muschette ran for 226 yards on 25 carries, he caught five passes for 38 yards. Girardi threw for 261 yards. A. J. Delmonico had eleven catches for 128 yards. The GT's leading receiver Corey O'Patchen did not play. Geneva falls to 3-3.

Robert Morris 17 – Monmouth 16
The Colonials get a special teams play from Cory Nolton, who blocked a 28 yard field goal attempt with six seconds to play. The Hawks had cut it to one, as Kyle Fraizer hit Chris Hogan with a eight yard touchdown pass with 98 seconds to play, but Eric Spillane hit the left upright on the point after attempt. Monmouth recovered an onsides kick at their own 45 and drove down the field to set up the attempt. Jeff Sinclair opened the scoring for RMU with a 10 yard run in the first quarter, Sinclair hit Shadrae King with a 12 yard touchdown early in the second. Garrett Clawson kicked a 34 yard field goal with three seconds left in the half to put the Colonials up 17-10. Sinclair finished 10 of 19 for 148 yards. Myles Russ was held below 100 yards but not by much, Russ gained 95 on 17 carries.
Robert Morris is now 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the NEC, Monmouth falls to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Central Connecticut State 31 – Duquesne 29
The Dukes came up just short in New Brittan on Saturday. Duquesne scored on the final play of regulation, a five yard touchdown pass from Sean Patterson to Dave Williams. The Dukes went for the tie, Patterson hit Akeem Moore for the two-pointer, but it was waived off as the officials ruled Moore had stepped out of bounds before catching the pass, making him an ineligible receiver. Larry McCoy had a big day for Duquesne, running for 246 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown, the Dukes are now 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the NEC. Patterson returned after missing last week with an ankle injury, he hit Williams with 2:07 remaining to cut the lead to eight. The Blue Devils were led by Everette Benjamin, who ran for 140 yards on 31 carries. Eric Richardson scored two touchdowns for CCSU, now 4-2 and winners of three straight. The Blue Devils are atop the NEC at 3-0.

Albany 48 – Saint Francis 0
The Great Danes, the last team in Division I to play a home game, delighted the home crowd by scoring on four of their first five possessions en route to a 24-0 halftime lead. Dan De Lilla threw two touchdown passes and Dillion Romain ran for two scores. Albany, now 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the NEC, racked up 417 total yards, the defense held Saint Francis to 81 yards. The Red Flash only had the ball for just under twenty minutes and made just three first downs. Saint Francis is now 1-3 overall and 1-2 in conference.

North Dakota State 34 – Youngstown State 29
The Bison hand the Penguins a tough loss at the Ice Castle, scoring with just 34 seconds remaining on a Jose Mohler 45 yard pass to Justin Howard. The Penguins rallied from a 28-20 fourth quarter deficit, Adaris Bellamy scored on a two yard run and Stephen Blose kicked a 38 yard field goal with 51 seconds remaining. Bellamy ran for 156 yards on the day. Kurt Hess threw for 252 yards and a touchdown, he also scored on a two yard run. Dominique Barnes had ten catches for 151 yards and a touchdown. The Penguins fall to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
The Bison, ranked 17th in the FCS coming into the game, were led by Mohler's three touchdown passes. D.J. McNorton had a huge day, running for 90 yards and catching six passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. North Dakota State is now 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the MVC.

California 34 – Gannon 7
The fourth ranked Vulcans remain unbeaten at 6-0 with the win in Erie. Cal has now won 22 consecutive West Division games and 23 consecutive road games against PSAC foes. Josh Portis threw for a season high 328 yards and three touchdowns, finishing 24 of 34 with no interceptions. Sophomore running back Lamont Smith ran for 104 yards and a touchdown, the fifth straight 100 yard game for Smith, who also caught seven passes for 96 yards. The defense held Gannon to 126 yards of offense and eight first downs. 61 of those yards came in the first quarter on a Zach Boedicker pass to Geoff Hicks. Cal U will now host Slippery Rock next week, the Vulcans are 3-0 in the division, the Rock 2-1. Gannon falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the West.

Mercyhurst 28 – IUP 27
The Lakers spoil Homecoming at George P. Miller Stadium with the victory. Travis Rearick hit Trevor Kennedy with a 28 yard touchdown with 26 seconds left to pull off the upset. Rearick made his first career start and played extremely well, throwing for 344 yards on 32 of 53 with three touchdowns. Terrance Coon had twelve catches for 112 yards and a touchdown, Kennedy made nine catches for 115 yards and two scores. Mercyhurst is now 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC West, they travel to Edinboro next week. For IUP, freshman quarterback Bo Napoleon struggled again, going 7 of 18 for 121 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Harvie Tuck carried 27 times for 161 yards. IUP is also 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the West, tied with Mercyhurt and Slippery Rock.

Clarion 49 – Lock Haven 6
Freshman quarterback Ben Fiscus threw for four touchdowns and ran for one as the Golden Eagles got into the win column on the road. Fiscus was perfect on the night, going 16 of 16 for 187 and ran ten times for 78 yards. Senior wide receiver Jacques Robinson had seven catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, making him the all-time leading receiver in Clarion history with 196 catches. Alfonso Hoggard added two touchdowns for the Golden Eagles, who led 42-0 at the half. Lock Haven has now dropped 27 consecutive games.

Seton Hill 48 – West Virginia State 20
The Griffins won the WVIAC two years ago, but since then had dropped twelve straight conference games. That is until Saturday. Seton Hill exploded for 539 yards at Offut Field to go to 2-5 overall. D.J. Lenehan threw for 241 yards and four touchdowns. R.J. Butler ran for 142 yards, he scored three touchdowns and David Miller, formerly of Greensburg Central Catholic, added 123 yards. Tyler McIntosh caught only two passes but both were for touchdowns. Seton Hill is now 1-3 in the conference. Ricky Philips and Fabian Payne scored touchdowns for West Virginia State, now 0-6.

Bethany 47 – Westminster 39
The Bison led 40-18 early in the fourth quarter, but held on for the win, snapping a 17 game losing streak in New Wilmington. Matt Grimard ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more to stake Bethany to the lead. Eric Walker added two touchdowns for the Bison, he ran for 174 yards on 33 carries. Grimard ran for 82 yards and threw for 204. The Bison are now 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the PAC.
Shawn Lehocky ran for a touchdown and threw for three, all in the fourth quarter. Lehocky threw for 209 yards and ran for 56. Westminster is now 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the PAC, the Titans dropped their fourth consecutive game, the last time that happened was in 1999.

Thomas More 31 – Grove City 9
The ninth ranked Saints got an early scare, trailing 9-7, but pulled away for the win at Robert E. Thorn Field. Robert Kues threw two touchdown passes, Kendall Owens added a 54 yard scoring run and Zack Autenrieb had a 32 yard Pick Six as the Saints go to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the PAC. Zach Gross struggled against the tough Saints defense, throwing for just 83 yards on 9 of 25 and two interceptions. Gross scored the only Wolverines touchdown on a 15 yard run. Grove City turned the football over four times, the Wolverines are now 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the PAC.

Carnegie Mellon 35 – Ohio Wesleyan 23
Patrick Blanks and Jake Nardone each ran for two touchdowns as the Tartans go to 4-2 on the season. CMU played keep away in the fourth quarter, possessing the football for over ten minutes of the final fifteen. Justin Pratt also scored a touchdown for the Tartans, who ground out 275 of their 305 total yards. De'Joun Fisher scored two touchdowns for Ohio Wesleyan, now 0-6 on the season.

Allegheny 34 – Kenyon 0
The Gators piled up 419 yards of offense to go to 3-2 on the season. Freshman Sean Acosta ran for 89 yards and his first career touchdown. Quarterback T.J. Salopek was 20 of 29 passing for 267 yards, Salopek also ran for a score. David Strawser had eight catches, Matt Griffin added six for the Gators attack. Allegheny is now 1-1 in the NCAC. Dan Shannon threw for 242 yards for Kenyon, now 0-5 overall and winless in two conference games.
