Shady Side Academy made history at Baldwin Stadium by defeating Sewickley Academy to become the first ever WPIAL Girls Class-A champions. The 5th seeded Indians scored an early 2nd half goal and used that momentum to help them control play throughout the final 40-minutes.
The 7th seeded Panthers controlled the play throughout the 1st half, but couldn't break through for a goal. The best chance for the Panthers came in the 28th minute when Melina George re-directed Sarah Rooney's corner kick. Indians goalkeeper Aubrey Jaicks got her fingers on the re-direct, while Kate Prochownik kept it from crossing the goal line. Sewickley Academy had the better of the play in the opening half, outshooting Shady Side Academy 4-0, getting 5 chances to the Indians 2, and having 2 corners to SSA's 1.
It didn't take long for the momentum to swing, as Shady Side Academy scored 1:35 into the 2nd half. Molly Magovern made a nice drive to the Sewickley Academy goal box, than passed to Makenna Crebs, who found Lia Winter on a bouncing pass across the box. Winter put the ball into the back of the net, putting SSA up 1-0 in the 42nd minute.
The Indians would make that lead stand up with a dominant ball control offense throughout the 2nd half, and a defense that limited Sewickley Academy to very few chances. In the 2nd half, SSA had 4 shots to the Panthers 1, and 5 chances to the Panthers 4.
Sewickley Academy had 3 corner kicks while the Indians had 2.
Both teams will now move onto the PIAA playoffs with games on Tuesday. Shady Side Academy (18-4) will play Wilmington at Shaler, while Sewickley Academy (14-7) takes on Conemaugh Township at Somerset.
