District College Football Recap for Saturday November 6th

On the first weekend in November, conference and divisional championships were decided in the NEC, PSAC and PAC, plus an offensive showdown in Greensburg highlight this week's action. Here are recaps from all the games around the region:
Gannon 24 – Slippery Rock 20
On a snowy playing surface at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium, the Rock turned the ball over six times and blew two ten point leads in the process.
Slippery Rock jumped out to a 3-0 lead midway thru the first period on a C.J. Bahr 20 yard field goal. Akeem Satterfield ran for a 28 yard touchdown to stake SRU to a 10-0 lead after one.
Gannon got on the scoreboard on a 79 yard drive, Zach Boedicker threw a ten yard pass to Evan Twombly for the score with 13:42 remaining in the half. Satterfield ran for his second touchdown late in the half from eight yards out to put the Rock back up 17-7. The Rock would get the football back in the final minute, but fumbled it away, setting up a Geoff Hicks 15 yard touchdown pass from Boedicker, to cut the lead to three at the half.
Jeremy Ditzler kicked a 41 yarder early into the third to know the game at 17. Bahr added a 37 yarder to put the Rock up three with 3:33 left in the quarter. Boedicker went 61 yards with a bootleg to put Gannon up for good.
Bahr missed a 32 yard field goal with eleven minutes to play and the Rock did not get another opportunity.
Boedicker ran 11 times for 117 yards and a touchdown, he threw for 93 more on 8 of 19. Gannon is now 6-4 overall and close out PSAC West play at 4-3.
For the Rock, Satterfield ran for 151 yards on 35 carries, he entered the game as the seventh leading rusher in Division II. Quarterback Ryan Sabo threw for 167 yards on 14 of 25, he was intercepted three times. The Rock ends West Division play at 3-4, SRU is 6-4 on the season. Slippery Rock will close out the season hosting C.W. Post in a PSAC crossover game at 1 pm next Saturday.
Washington & Jefferson 47 – Thiel 14
The Presidents picked up their sixth straight win and the benching of quarterback Gino Rometo in the first quarter to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Rometo started the game two of five with a sack to end one drive and a red zone interception. He was replaced by Andrew Cappucci, who went three of four on a 64 yard drive, leading to a Cappucci 15 yard touchdown pass to Alex Baroffio with 5:01 left in the first.
Rometo was inserted back into the lineup at the start of the second and four plays later hit Jordan Roycroft for a 36 yard touchdown and a 14-0 Presidents lead. After a bad punt snap, W & J took over at the 16 yard line and Tim McNerney ran for a one yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead. On the next possession, Rometo threw a 28 yard td pass to Roycroft, the extra point was blocked and a 27-0 lead. Berend Grube missed a 40 yard field goal for the Tomcats, giving the ball back to the Presidents, who took it 77 yards in six plays for another McNerney five yard run and a 34-0 halftime lead.
Thiel put a drive together to start the third quarter, Jared Soell threw a seven yard pass to Nate Houpt for a Tomcat touchdown. Rometo added a ten yard touchdown late in the third. Joe Combine came on to start the fourth quarter and threw a touchdown pass to Nick Puckett of 26 yards. Soell ended the scoring on a ten yard touchdown pass to Derrell McCaleb.
Rometo ended the game at 15 of 20 for 206 yards. Roycroft had eight catches for 143 yards. W & J is now 7-2 overall and are 5-1 in the PAC.
Soell threw for 248 yards on 16 of 33, he ran for 67 more. The Tomcats are now 0-9 on the season and have dropped eleven consecutive games.
Robert Morris 42 – Central Connecticut State 24
Myles Russ ran for 177 yards as the Colonials win the NEC for the first time since 2000 and pick up an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs. RMU scored on their first possession, a Jeff Sinclair 20 yard pass to T. J. Green. Joe Izzo kicked a 29 yard field goal for the Blue Devils, but Robert Morris answered that with another touchdown. Sinclair hit Shadrae King for fourteen yards and a score and a 14-3 lead. Gunnar Jespersen threw an eight yard td pass to Chris Tolbert to cut the RMU lead to four, but Jeff Link scored on a one yard run to give the Colonials a 21-10 lead after one. Raphael Johnson scored on a two yard run to push the lead to 28-10, Jespersen threw to Josue Paul for sixty yards to cut the Colonial lead to eleven at the half. Robert Morris put the game away in the third quarter, Russ scored on a 44 yard run, Link added a six yard run in the final minute of the quarter to put Robert Morris up 42-17. Jespersen ran for a score from a yard out to end the scoring. Robert Morris held the ball for over 35 minutes and picked up 26 first downs. With the 177 yards, Russ became the fourth running back in NEC history to rush for over four thousand yards for his career. Sinclair threw for 140 yards and the two touchdowns. Robert Morris is now 8-1 overall and 7-0 in the NEC, the Colonials can run the table in the conference with a win next week at Bryant. For the Blue Devils, the 2009 NEC champions, Jespersen threw for 283 yards, he was intercepted twice and sacked three times. Paul had five catches for 156 yards. CCSU falls to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
Mercyhurst 38 – Clarion 14
The Lakers will host the PSAC State Championship game next week after the win Saturday at Tullio Field. Number 21 Mercyhurst will take on number 13 Bloomsburg at noon next Saturday. Both teams were ranked in the NCAA Super Region I rankings released last week, Mercyhurst was ranked third, Bloomsburg fifth at 9-1 overall. The Golden Eagles tried their best to spoil the day for the Lakers, jumping out to a 14-0 lead. Chris Wilson picked off passes on the Lakers first two possessions, Wilson took the second pick back for 97 yards and a touchdown. Alfonso Hoggard ran for a three yard touchdown and that lead, but that would be all for Clarion on this day. Trailing by fourteen, Mercyhurst drove to the 11 yard line where Steven Wakefield missed a 28 yard attempt, but Clarion was offsides, allowed Travis Rearick to hit Jeff Groene for a six yard touchdown. Rearick added a 51 yard td pass to Terrance Coon to tie the score at fourteen at the half. The Lakers scored on the first two possessions of the second half, Rearick threw td passes to Gerald Anderson and Trevor Kennedy. Anderson added a 16 yard run and Mohawk's Andrew Bukta intercepted Ben Fiscus and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown. Wakefield added a 22 yard field goal to end the scoring. Anderson ran for 152 yards on thirty carries. Rearick threw for 264 yards, he was picked off three times. Coon had five catches for 104 yards. Mercyhurst is now 8-2 overall and finishes 6-1 in the West.
California 24 – Edinboro 0
Number 12 Cal will not play for the PSAC championship but looks in good shape for another post-season appearance. Josh Portis threw for three second half touchdowns and the Vulcan defense held the Boro' offense to just 79 yards for the game. Marc Domonkos broke a scoreless tie with a 20 yard field goal with 2:39 left in the opening half to give Cal a 3-0 lead. Portis took over in the third quarter, hitting Blake Williamson for a 26 yard touchdown midway thru the quarter. The senior QB found fellow senior Terrance Moore for 22 yards and a score. Portis finished the scoring with a five yard touchdown pass to Chedrick Cherry, it was Cherry's eighth touchdown catch of the season. Cal hosts Cheyney next week in a PSAC crossover matchup, the Vulcans have 13 of 14 meetings with Cheyney all-time. Cal was ranked fourth in the NCAA Super Region I rankings last week, the top six teams qualify for the Division II playoff field.
Thomas More 14 – Waynesburg 10
The ninth ranked Saints scored in the final minute to claim their third straight PAC title and an automatic Division III playoff berth. Robert Kues connected twice with Mercier Doucette, the first in the opening quarter for fifteen yards and the last coming with 49 seconds left, a four yard pass play. Waynesburg got a 28 yard field goal from Jon Storck and a Dominic Moore one yard run. Kues threw for 275 yards on 21 of 32. Kendall Owens and Adam Rauch each had five catches for the Saints, who are now 9-0 overall and finish PAC play at 7-0. Brad Dawson was 31 of 54 for 215 yards, he was picked off three times and sacked four more. Waynesburg was held to 33 yards on the ground for the game. The Yellow Jackets fall to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Waynesburg travels to W & J next week.
West Liberty 82 – Seton Hill 36
Zach Amedro became the all-time passing leader in Division II, throwing for 525 yards and eight touchdowns in the win at Offut Field. Amedro now has 14,377 yards for his career. Jermaine Carter caught four touchdown passes, Ryan Travis had thirteen catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Kevin Calhoun ran for 108 yards and caught four passes for 141 yards. West Liberty is now 6-3 overall and 5-2 in the WVIAC, the Hilltoppers racked up 649 yards of offense. For Seton Hill, D. J. Lenehan threw for 285 yards and two scores, Jorge Valdovinos caught seven passes for 115 yards. R. J. Butler ran for 90 yards for the Griffins, who end the season at 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the WVIAC.
Bryant 48 – Saint Francis 10
Jordan Brown ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns and Mike Canfora added two scores as the Bulldogs pick up their first road victory on the season in Loretto. Michael Perry also ran for 98 yards and a score for Bryant, now 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the NEC. The Red Flash was held to 113 yards of offense, Jude Yearwood ran for a seven yard touchdown late in the game. Saint Francis is now 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the conference, the Red Flash has dropped six straight.
Illinois State 41 – Youngstown State 39
Matt Brown threw a forty yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Walker with one second to play to give the Redbirds the win in MVC action. Brown threw for 390 yards and five touchdowns, Walker caught nine passes for 206 yards and three scores. Illinois State is 5-5 overall, 4-4 in the MVC. Jamaine Cook ran for 213 yards and three touchdowns. Kurt Hess threw two touchdowns and Dominique Barnes had eight catches for 113 yards. YSU is now 3-7 overall and 1-6 in conference. The Penguins have dropped six straight.
IUP 63 – Lock Haven 31
IUP won their 29th consecutive game against the Bald Eagles and handed Lock Haven their 31st consecutive loss overall.
Terrell Washington returned two interceptions for touchdowns, Bo Napoleon threw two touchdown passes to Mychal Skinner and Teddy Blakeman ran for two scores. Harvie Tuck ran for 190 yards and a score for IUP, now 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the PSAC West. For Lock Haven, Jarrett Kratzer threw for 280 yards and three touchdowns. Jay Hartman had ten catches for 150 yards, Jesse Hoover had three catches for 128 yards and two scores.
Saint Vincent 21 – Westminster 14
Westminster jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead on two Shawn Lehocky touchdown passes to Nick Sorice. Saint Vincent rallied in the second on a halfback pass from Mike Kale to Sheldon Loughner of 29 yards and a Jake Smith one yard run. Smith hit Loughner on a ten yard pass in the third with 3:15 left to take the lead for good. Kale ran for 157 yards and a touchdown pass, Saint Vincent is now 3-6 overall and 3-3 in the PAC. For Westminster, John Proano ran for 110 yards, Lehocky threw for 256 yards on 18 of 38. Jordan Rooney and J. J. Nalesnik picked off passes for Westminster, the Titans fall to 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
Grove City 21 – Bethany 7
Brian Pell threw for 193 yards and two touchdowns as the Wolverines pick up the win at Thorn Field. Blaine Miller ran for 75 yards and a touchdown, Luke O'Hara caught six passes for 73 yards and a score. Grove City is now 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the PAC. Matt Grimard scored on a ten yard run for the Bison, Eric Walker was held to 69 yards rushing. Bethany is also 4-5 overall but 3-3 in the conference.
University of Chicago 61 – Carnegie Mellon 22
The Tartans jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a Jake Nardone touchdown, but Dee Brizzolara ran for five touchdowns as the Maroons blew out the Tartans on their home field. Quarterback Marshall Oium threw six touchdown passes as UC goes to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in UAA play. Brizzolara caught three touchdown passes, he returned a punt 86 yards for a score and took the second half kickoff 83 yards to the house. Brizzolara ended the day with 432 yards, including eight catches for 235 yards. Oium threw for 410 yards on 21 of 31. For CMU, Justin Pratt ran for 107 yards and a touchdown. Nardone added 91 yards rushing. The Tartans fall to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the UAA.
Allegheny 43 – Hiram 21
Quarterback T.J. Salopek threw for 209 yards and three touchdowns as the Gators cruised to the road win. Brian Tamburlin ran for 112 yards on 22 carries. Matt Dievert ran for 97 yards and a touchdown. The Gators are now 6-3 overall and 4-2 in NCAC play. The Terriers were led by Maxwell Bohon, who came on late and went 7-8 for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Steve Brown returned a fumble 85 yards for a score. Hiram is now 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC.
