Highlights of the week ahead in local high school sports:

Football winds into Week 2 — the third week of play for many teams — and soccer teams delve into section play as the fall season revs up.

TUESDAY

Boys soccer

Latrobe at Franklin Regional and No. 3 Penn-Trafford at Hempfield are key Section 4-4A openers, while Norwin at No. 1 North Allegheny matches two strong programs in nonsection play.

Franklin Regional won the Shaler Tournament, and Norwin won the Intersection Tournament at Seneca Valley over the weekend.

Girls soccer

Greensburg Salem visits Belle Vernon in the Section 2-3A opener.

WEDNESDAY

Girls soccer

No. 1 Norwin opens its season of great expectations at Bethel Park at 7:30 p.m. in a nonsection game. Norwin is ranked No. 2 in the nation by TopDrawer Soccer.

Yough, ranked No. 4 in Class AA, opens at South Allegheny.

Jeannette is at Apollo-Ridge, and Riverview visits No. 3 Greensburg Central Catholic in Section 1-A.

THURSDAY

Boys soccer

Section 4-4A play continues with Franklin Regional visiting Penn-Trafford and Hempfield playing Norwin in night games. Burrell at Mt. Pleasant in Section 2-2A usually produces a good finish.

Girls soccer

Nonsection games to watch include Greensburg Salem at Yough, Hempfield at Franklin Regional, Penn-Trafford at Seneca Valley and Norwin at Plum.

FRIDAY

Football

Hempfield won a 41-38 shootout last season against Mt. Lebanon, and the teams get a Class 6A Southeastern Conference rematch at Mt. Lebanon. The game will be televised by WPNT-22. The Spartans must slow down Blue Devils receiver Aidan Cain, who caught 27 passes for 350 yards — not a misprint — against Pine-Richland last week.

Franklin Regional, fresh off an upset of No. 1 McKeesport, visits Kiski Area, and third-ranked Penn-Trafford hosts Plum in the 5A Big East Conference. Greensburg Salem goes to Laurel Highlands in the 4A Big Nine.

Mt. Pleasant takes on No. 4 South Park at Dormont Stadium, and Yough visits Derry in 3A Interstate clashes. Norwin travels to Shaler and Southmoreland visits Charleroi in nonconference games.

SATURDAY

Boys soccer

An all-local nonsection match features Hempfield at Greensburg Central Catholic. Ligonier Valley travels to Derry, and Latrobe hosts Mt. Pleasant.

Girls soccer

Mt. Lebanon visits Norwin in a nonsection test, and Penn-Trafford hosts Pine-Richland.

Cross country

The annual Red, White and Blue Invitational will bring dozens of teams to Schenley Park. The race starts at 9 a.m.
