Westmoreland high school sports week ahead: Week of Sept. 18, 2017

Highlights of the week ahead in Westmoreland high school sports:

MONDAY

Boys golf

The WPIAL individual postseason begins with section tournaments at various sites, and Jeannette is the host of Section 1-AA at Greensburg Country Club. The players shooting the designated target score within 10 shots of the course rating, will advance — the Class AAA players to the semifinal round, the Class AA players to the WPIAL finals.

Girls golf

Sectional tournaments begin across the WPIAL. Mt. Pleasant is the host team in Section 1-AA at Norvelt Golf Club. Players shooting the designated target score within 20 shots of the course rating at each sectional will advance to the WPIAL finals.

Girls soccer

Top-rated Norwin heads to Hempfield to play a team that tied it in a game last season in Section 4-4A. Penn-Trafford visits Kiski Area in another Section 4 game.

In Section 1-3A, Franklin Regional faces a stern road test at Knoch, and Belle Vernon at Elizabeth Forward features two of the top teams in Section 2-3A.

Boys soccer

No. 2 Penn-Trafford has some strong nonsection opponents to help it get ready for the postseason, and visiting Fox Chapel is one of those teams.

Mt. Pleasant hosts Southmoreland in another nonsection game.

Girls volleyball

Latrobe travels to Derry for their annual rivalry match.

Hockey

The Greensburg Central Catholic preseason hockey tournament continues with Penn-Trafford vs. Thomas Jefferson at 7:15 p.m. and West Allegheny vs. Greensburg Salem at 8:45 at Nevin Arena.

TUESDAY

Boys golf

Norwin hosts the Section 1 individual tournament at Youghiogheny Country Club.

Boys soccer

The Section 4-4A standings continue to tighten, but this week's schedule should help alleviate some of the congestion. Connellsville visits Franklin Regional, Kiski Area goes to Hempfield and Latrobe visits Norwin.

Derry goes for the upset against No. 3 Freeport in Section 2-2A.

Serra Catholic at Greensburg Central Catholic is worth a look in Section 2-A.

Girls volleyball

Derry travels to Freeport for a Section 5-2A showdown, and Franklin Regional visits No. 5 Hempfield in a key Section 3-4A match.

WEDNESDAY

Girls soccer

No. 3 Yough faces No. 4 Waynesburg to Cougar Mountain in a Section 3-2A clash.

Norwin visits Kiski Area in Section 4-4A, and Apollo-Ridge goes to Greensburg Central Catholic in Section 1-A.

THURSDAY

Boys soccer

Section 4-4A continues to ramp up with Franklin Regional at Kiski Area, Latrobe at Hempfield and Norwin at Penn-Trafford. All are 7:30 starts.

Derry at Mt. Pleasant is a game to watch in Section 2-2A, and Yough is at Southmoreland in Section 3-2A. In Section 2-A, Greensburg Central Catholic plays at Jeannette.

Girls soccer

Penn-Trafford at Franklin Regional is a nonsection game to check out.

Girls volleyball

Latrobe is at No. 10 Norwin is a Section 3-4A match of note.

Hockey

South Fayette meets Elizabeth Forward at 7:15 p.m. and Thomas Jefferson and Hempfield play at 8:45 in the GCC preseason tournament at Nevin Arena.

Friday

Football

Better matchups begin popping up as the season progresses, and there are a few in Week 4. Greensburg Salem travels to Belle Vernon in a Class 4A Big Nine game, Armstrong visits Franklin Regional in a 5A Big East clash and Derry heads to South Park in the 3A Interstate.

Girls tennis

The WPIAL committee will meet to draw up brackets for the team playoffs. The top four teams in each section qualify. The postseason starts Monday.

Saturday

Football

A much-anticipated showdown in the Class A Eastern Conference has Jeannette taking on Imani Christian. Kickoff between the big-play teams is set for 1:30 p.m. at Wilkinsburg's Graham Field.

Boys soccer

Section 4-4A does not rest for weekends: Hempfield at Penn-Trafford is the game to watch. Laurel Highlands travels to Belle Vernon in Section 3-3A

Girls soccer

Elizabeth Forward at Yough (10 a.m.), and Latrobe at Greensburg Salem (2 p.m.) are notable on the nonsection slate.
