Freedom coach Tom Liberty resigns

A WPIAL football coach resigned midseason for the second time this week.

Freedom's Tom Liberty, whose team is in playoff position, resigned with two weeks left in the regular season. Athletic director John Rosa confirmed that the school's administration accepted Liberty's resignation. Liberty could not be reached for comment but said in a text message he was not asked to resign.

Liberty's departure follows Waynesburg coach Russ Moore, who resigned Saturday after a double-overtime loss dropped the Raiders to 1-6.

Liberty was finishing his second season at Freedom after head coaching stints at Riverside and Quaker Valley. Russ Barley, Freedom's top assistant, will replace Liberty.

The Bulldogs are 5-3 overall, 3-2 in the WPIAL Class 2A Midwestern Conference. They are tied for fourth with Neshannock and will visit the Lancers on Friday. Freedom faces conference-leading Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in Week 9.
