Pittsburgh athletes of the week: Montour’s Seth Schleicher, Knoch’s Sarah Armahizer

Seth Schleicher

School: Montour

Class: Senior

Sport: Soccer

Claim to fame: Schleicher scored the lone goal in the WPIAL Class AAA championship game as Montour claimed a 1-0 win over section rival West Allegheny on Saturday. The win gave the program its first WPIAL championship. Schleicher will continue his soccer career at Robert Morris, where he will major in broadcast journalism.

How were you able to score the game-winning goal?

It was kind of a crazy play. I was pressuring the center back and he played it back to the goalie, and I was hoping he wouldn't get off a great kick and he didn't, so our midfielder passed up the ball. … I knew I had space, so I was able to turn and go to his left side and just had a crack at it and (I was) happy it went in.

What does it feel like to be a WPIAL champion?

It feels awesome; it's extra special because it's the first one in program history, and it's twice as special because it's senior year and it means the world.

What was the difference in the game after losing to West Allegheny twice earlier in the year?

We were up 1-0 in all three games actually. The first two we lost 2-1 and 3-2, so once I scored that goal we went back into the locker room and said just keep our heads and we know what it's like to give up one-goal leads, we had done it twice already, this time we know what it takes to not give it up again. We were able to hold on and it was a great feeling.

What's your favorite class?

Tech lab (woodshop). It's just fun, and I like building stuff.

What was the last movie you saw, and how many stars would you rate it?

“Thank you for your service.” It was pretty good and pretty intense. Probably four stars.

Sarah Armahizer

School: Knoch

Class: Senior

Sport: Volleyball

Claim to fame: Armahizer led the team with 24 kills as Knoch defeated Montour, 3-1, to win the WPIAL Class AAA girls volleyball championship, the first in program history. Knoch followed up its WPIAL title with a 3-0 win over Somerset in the first round of the PIAA playoffs Tuesday. Armahizer will continue her volleyball career next season at Edinboro.

What was the key to your win in the WPIAL championship?

It was our first appearance at a WPIAL game, and it was just a really big deal for all of us. We really wanted it for everybody, since Knoch volleyball hadn't made an appearance at WPIALs in a long time, so it was a personal thing too, to get that first championship for (coach) Diane Geist and everyone.

What was it like to be a part of the program's first championship?

It was such an honor. Even being there was just an experience. The vibe in the gym was insane. It's a good feeling.

How were you able to maintain your focus after winning the WPIAL title to then pick up where you left off in the first round of the state playoffs?

We're not done. You can just tell that we want to keep pushing. So I think that's a huge motivator to us.

How did you get started playing volleyball?

My sister played, so we would always go to her games. (Teammates) Kerrie Fitzpatrick and Carly Bozzo's sisters played with my sister, so we would always go to games, and we would all go in the hallway and play volleyball together.

What's your favorite class?

Art. I've never taken an art class before, so it's a lot of fun.
