November's NCAA national letter of intent early signing period has been fruitful for Gateway seniors the past couple of years.

Jordan Edwards (Niagara, basketball) and Olivia Miller (Pitt, gymnastics) started the party this year by signing with their college choices on the day (Nov. 8) the weeklong period started.

Then, Abby Herman (Seton Hill, tennis) and John Paul Kromka (Pitt Johnstown, basketball) followed suit and finalized their choices.

For Herman and Kromka, it was the culmination of careful consideration through the recruiting process. Both believe the balance of strong athletic and academic programs make their decision all the more satisfying.

“It's really nice for the whole process to be over with,” said Herman, who competed at the WPIAL singles and doubles tournaments this year.

“It was a little stressful at times, not knowing what the outcome would be. But after my tryout with the team, I knew. It's a great relief to know where I am going and great to have the opportunity to share my signing with family and friends.”

Herman plans to pursue a degree in the medical field with the hopes of becoming a physician assistant.

Kromka's focus will be on mechanical engineering.

“I am pretty comfortable with where I am going, and I know I can be productive there,” said Kromka, who expects to be a scoring and rebounding force again for a Gators team looking to defend their Section 3-5A title this season.

Kromka follows three older brothers who played college basketball. Joe played at Carnegie Mellon, Mike made his mark at Clarion, and Tommy is a senior forward on the team at Saint Vincent.
