Penn State offers scholarship to Gateway freshman Derrick Davis

Fresh off his appearance in the state football finals, Gateway freshman Derrick Davis added a scholarship offer Tuesday from Penn State.
Davis received his offer when Penn State coach James Franklin visited the high school, Gateway coach Don Holl said. He already had offers from Pitt and West Virginia.
At 6 foot, 170 pounds and only weeks removed from his 15th birthday, Davis could play multiple positions in college. Recruiters haven’t specified a spot, but Holl envisions him as a big cornerback or safety, or maybe a linebacker if he continues to grow.
“He’s got all the measurable and ball skills,” Holl said. “Him playing a lot of places wouldn’t be surprising. He’s kind of that body type where he could be a lot of different things.”

Davis had 97 total tackles, two interceptions and 51⁄2 sacks this season. Offensively, he had 439 yards and eight touchdowns on 83 carries, along with 480 yards and two touchdowns on 35 receptions.
