Pittsburgh athletes of the week: Laurel Highlands’ Bryce Laskey, Ringgold’s Ashley Briscoe

Bryce Laskey

School: Laurel Highlands

Sport: Basketball

Class: Senior

Claim to fame: Laskey, who made eight 3-pointers, scored 45 points and reached 1,000 points for his career as Laurel Highlands (2-3, 0-1 Section 1-5A) defeated Elizabeth Forward, 92-65, in nonsection action Dec. 12. He added 46 in a loss to Greensburg Salem on Tuesday. Laskey averaged 33.3 points through four games.

“It was pretty surreal with that game (against Elizabeth Forward), especially in the first half. Everything I put up was going in,” Laskey said.

What made you commit to St. Francis (Pa.)?

I just liked the atmosphere and the people. I just fell in love with the whole package at St. Francis. I'm thinking in majoring in political science, but I'm not exactly sure at this time.

What was it like to reach the 1,000-point milestone on a career night?

It meant a lot. It validated the work I've put in throughout my basketball career. Just to be included with the guys at Laurel Highlands that have scored 1,000 points is just really a blessing.

What did the team learn from the WPIAL Class 5A playoff loss to Mars last season?

Even though it didn't go the way we thought, there were moments in that game where our team realized we can play with the best teams in the WPIAL. It's a daily thing for us. We just have to come to that day's practice just to prepare for that day. We have to get back to where we were previous years and hope we exceed the point that we had gotten to.

How has your game developed throughout the years?

My freshman and sophomore year, I don't think I stepped inside the 3-point line the entire year. I went from primarily a 3-point shooter to being more in the paint.

What was your favorite cartoon growing up?

“SpongeBob SquarePants” because the humor of it.

Ashley Briscoe

School: Ringgold

Sport: Basketball

Class: Senior

Claim to fame: Briscoe scored 12 points and surpassed 1,000 points for her career as Ringgold (2-3) edged Charleroi, 40-39, in a nonsection game Dec. 12. Briscoe scored a team-high 14 points for Ringgold in a 55-52 loss to Allderdice on Dec. 15.

“I think we are doing very well so far this year,” Briscoe said.

What are your college plans for next year?

I verbally committed to Duquesne for a soccer scholarship during my sophomore year. I still have an offer to Richmond, so that's still an option.

What does it mean to reach the 1,000-point plateau?

It's a great accomplishment. I have been getting my points up. My coach just told me to relax. I couldn't have done it without her and my teammates. I'm very thankful for her to push me.

What is your favorite sport, soccer or basketball?

I like them both, but I like basketball more because it's more competitive than soccer.

How can you apply soccer to the basketball court?

It keeps me fit. I play cup soccer as well so it just keeps me in shape.

What is your favorite Christmas movie?

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” I would watch that all the time as a child, so that's one of my favorites.
