Canon-McMillan fans were on their feet when Zack Rohaley and Kiski Area senior Danny Starr took the mat in the finals of the WPIAL Class AAA Team Tournament on Saturday.

The Big Macs fans sensed a title if Rohaley could pull off the win.

But Starr had other ideas. A minute and 20 seconds into the 220-pound match, he pancaked Rohaley and pinned him to clinch the Cavaliers’ second consecutive title and fourth in school history with a 33-24 victory at Trinity.

“When I got him on his back, I wasn’t going to let him up,” Starr said, clutching the WPIAL trophy. “I knew the match was coming down to the end, and Coach (Chris Heater) told me just to get a win. This is the biggest thing to happen for me in my career.”

Delp, who didn’t want to comment on the injury to Adams, said he was praying for him.

“For our school to get back-to-back titles in pretty impressive,” Delp said. “No other sport at the school has accomplished it except us.”

Kiski Area won three one-point decisions, including Bobby Lawrence at 126, along with Kuhn’s two-point win. Lawrence rallied from a 2-0 deficit and secured the win with a takedown with 20 seconds left to defeat Jacob Gardner.

“Starting in the upper weights was to our benefit,” Heater said. “I’m proud of the efforts we got in the lower weights. The kids knew there would be some dogfights throughout the match.”

Kiski and Canon-McMillan advance to the PIAA Team Championship, which begins Thursday at Hershey. The Cavaliers’ next opponent will be determined Monday in the preliminary round, and Canon-McMillan will face the District 1 champion.

Seneca Valley placed third by defeating Waynesburg, 39-31. The Raiders (15-1) will face City League champion Carrick on Monday at Carrick.

In the semifinals, Kiski defeated Waynesburg, 39-26, and Canon-McMillan topped Seneca Valley, 47-17.
