High school roundup for Feb. 9: Seneca Valley boys upset No. 2 Butler

The Seneca Valley boys basketball team has some momentum with the playoffs looming after capping off its Section 1-6A slate with an upset victory.

Led by 24 points from Chris Hart and 17 from David Ritchie, the Raiders defeated No. 2-ranked Butler, 78-75, in the section finale Friday night in Butler.

The Raiders (14-7, 7-5), who have won six straight games, finished fourth in the section.

Ethan Morton had 26 points for Butler (17-4, 8-4), which finished third in Section 1. The playoff pairings will be announced Tuesday night.

North Allegheny 67, North Hills 60 – Justin Altmeyer and Mike Iuzillino each had 17 points to guide North Allegheny (8-13, 4-8) to a Section 1-6A win.

Pine-Richland 85, Shaler 64 — Phil Jurkovec and Colin Luellen each had 18 points to guide Pine-Richland (17-5, 9-3) to a Section 1-6A win. Daniel Petcash had 14 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for the Rams.

Baldwin 49, Bethel Park 48 — Nick Fiumara hit the game-winning basket with 11.9 seconds left to lift Baldwin (11-10, 5-7) to a Section 2-6A win. Mike Goga had 16 points to lead Baldwin.

Canon-McMillan 64, Peters Township 53 — Jason Fowlkes had 20 points to lift No. 1 Canon-McMillan (19-2, 10-2) to a Section 2-6A victory.

Mt. Lebanon 78, Upper St. Clair 54 — Antonio Garofoli had 26 points and Caden Hinkley added 22 for No. 3 Mt. Lebanon (19-3, 11-1) in a Section 2-6A victory. The Blue Devils clinched the section title.

Fox Chapel 70, Plum 37 — A fast start helped Fox Chapel post a strong ending to Section 3-6A play.

The Class 6A No. 5 Foxes jumped out to a double-digit lead after the first quarter and rolled to a win over rival Plum on Friday.

Dom McGriff finished with a game-high 15 points, Carson Cohen added 14 and Ben Kelly chipped in with 13 for Fox Chapel (17-4, 11-3).

Lamar Whiting led Plum (6-15, 1-13) with 11 points and Chase Fink added 10.

Hempfield 55, Norwin 52 — Jules Nicholls scored 11 points as Hempfield (7-15, 4-10) wrapped up Section 3-6A play with a win. Gianni Rizzo had 17 points for Norwin (10-11, 5-9).

Penn Hills 94, Latrobe 82 — Daivon Stephens had 21 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists as No. 4 Penn Hills (19-3, 11-3) won in Section 3-6A. Bryce Butler had 24 points and Reed Fenton added 23 for fourth-place Latrobe (14-7, 9-5).

Woodland Hills 55, Penn-Trafford 37 — Keandre Bowles scored 13 points to lift section champion Woodland Hills (19-3, 12-2) to a Section 3-6A win. Sean Kelly had 10 points for P-T (6-16, 3-11).

Trinity 80, Ringgold 43 — Joey Koroly scored 17 points to help No. 3 Trinity (17-4, 10-2) to a Section 1-5A win.

Mars 57, Hampton 43 — Robby Carmody had 34 points to lift No. 1 Mars (17-4, 11-1) to a win in Section 2-5A.

West Allegheny 46, Chartiers Valley 45 — Jared Knop's basket with 1.2 seconds left gave West Allegheny (9-11, 7-5) a Section 2-5A win. He had 14 points for the Indians. Joe Pipilo had 22 points to lead Chartiers Valley (7-13, 4-8).

Indiana 60, Derry 51 — Carlos Carter had 22 points and surpassed 1,000 for his career to lead No. 4 Indiana (17-3, 11-1) to a Section 1-4A win. Conner Watt had 14 points for Derry (8-11, 4-8).

Yough 69, Mt. Pleasant 67 — CJ Waldier had 27 points and Jarett Bach added 22 as Yough (4-17, 1-11) won a Section 1-4A game. Jake Johnson had 36 points for Mt. Pleasant (3-19, 1-11).

Central Valley 60, Hopewell 43 — In Section 2-4A, Josh Kline had 19 points to guide Central Valley (14-6, 10-4) to victory.

New Castle 55, Beaver Falls 43 — Marcus Hooker's 17 points guided No. 2 New Castle (16-4, 11-3) to a Section 2-4A victory.

Quaker Valley 63, Ambridge 57 — Ryan Stowers had 17 points and Coletrane Washington and Ricky Guss each had 15 as No. 1 Quaker Valley (20-0, 14-0) won in Section 2-4A.

Belle Vernon 69, Elizabeth Forward 42 — Members of the Belle Vernon boys basketball team got to cut down the nets for a second straight season.

Bolstered by a 21-point lead at halftime, the Leopards captured a second consecutive section title with a victory over Elizabeth Forward in Section 3-4A play.

Matt Wobrak and Bryce Washington each hit two 3-pointers for Belle Vernon (17-4, 12-2).

Uniontown 95, Waynesburg 72 — Kam Fitzgerald had 28 points and Billy Deshields added 26 as Uniontown (13-8, 9-5) won in Section 3-4A.

Burgettstown 72, South Side Beaver 55 — Garrett Dhans had 22 points to guide Burgettstown (15-6, 9-3) to a Section 4-3A win. The victory clinched second place for Burgettstown.

Charleroi 75, Southmoreland 68 — Caleb Carson had 21 points to guide Charleori (7-14, 3-9) to a Section 4-3A win. Cade Richter scored 15 points and Ronnie Robinson 14 for the Scotties (4-18, 3-9).

Springdale 42, Riverview 29 — The Dynamos (11-8, 6-6) secured the 33rd WPIAL playoff berth in school history with a Section 1-2A win. Junior Mike Zolnierczyk had 13 points and eight rebounds. Riverview (2-18, 0-11) was led by freshman Gideon Deasy's nine points.

Carmichaels 82, Jefferson-Morgan 61 — Jalen Torres had 25 points and surpassed 1,000 for his career as Carmichaels (11-10, 3-9) won in Section 2-2A.

Monessen 74, West Greene 40 — Lyndon Henderson had 26 points as No. 1 Monessen (13-7, 10-0) won in Section 2-A. The Greyhounds finished on a 24-3 run.

Eden Christian Academy 57, Holy Family Academy 45 — Chase Haring had 22 points as Eden Christian Academy (15-4, 8-2) won in Section 3-A.

Central Catholic 77, Lincoln Park 54 — Maurice Shipman scored 22 points, and Luke Nedrow had 18 as Central Catholic (13-7) won a nonsection game. Keeno Holmes scored 16 points for Class 3A No. 1 Lincoln Park (14-6).

Clairton 89, St. Joseph 28 — Class A No. 3 Clairton put the game away early, beating St. Joseph in nonsection play. Andrew Sullivan led St. Joseph (6-16) with 12 points. Khori Fusco scored a game-high 20 to lead Clairton (16-4).

Connellsville 66, Kiski Area 45 — Nick Smith had 13 points for Kiski Area (1-20) in a nonsection loss. Jack Colecchi finished with 12 points and Austin Schwarz scored 11. Treyvon Clayton led Connellsville (9-12) with 19 points, Jake Ansell scored 14 and Dylan Bubarth added 13 points.

Franklin Regional 69, McKeesport 60 — Nate Leopold had 16 points and Aidan Sadoski added 14 as Franklin Regional (17-4) topped No. 2 McKeesport (14-7) in a nonsection game.

Ligonier Valley 78, Purchase Line 65 — Marrek Paola scored 31 points and Michael Marinchak added 21 to lead Ligonier Valley (17-4) over Purchase Line (18-4) in the Heritage Conference championship game at IUP.

Girls basketball

Montour 39, Moon 36 — In Section 1-5A, Courtney Tomas had 25 points to lift playoff-bound Montour (9-13, 4-6) to a victory.

Carmichaels 69, Jeannette 43 — Kristina Aeschbacher had 19 points to lead Carmichaels (6-15, 3-11) to a Section 3-2A win. Dymond Crawford scored 14 points for Jeannette (7-15, 4-10).

Chartiers Valley 45, Oakland Catholic 31 — Megan McConnell had 18 points to guide Chartiers Valley (15-6) to a nonsection win.

East Allegheny 82, Leechburg 57 — Amani Johnson led four East Allegheny players in double figures with 25 points and recorded her 500th assist, breaking the school's all-time record, as the Class 3A No. 2 Wildcats (22-0) won a nonsection game. Mikayla Lovelace had 22 points and Cam Davies scored 18 for Class 2A No. 4 Leechburg (17-4).

Gateway 40, Fox Chapel 34 — Claudia Guerrieri scored nine points for Fox Chapel (8-13) in a nonsection loss to Class 5A No. 4 Gateway. Jordan Edwards had 16 points for the Gators (19-3) and Lexi Jackson scored 10.

Greensburg Salem 58, Apollo-Ridge 57 — Megan Kallock led Greensburg Salem (7-13) with 38 points en route to a nonsection victory.

Penn Hills 59, Latrobe 51 — Adia Brisker had 15 points to lift Penn Hills (12-8, 5-5) to a Section 2-6A victory. Mackenzie Markle scored 23 points and Laura Graytok had 16 points for No. 5 Latrobe (15-6, 6-4). Both teams have qualified for the playoffs.

Sewickley Academy 48, Lincoln Park 35 — Sam Smith scored 22 points as Class A No. 4 Sewickley Academy (13-5) won a nonsection game.

Shaler 47, McKeesport 46 — Megan Lydon had 24 points, including the game-winning free throw with 10 seconds left , as Shaler (10-12) won a nonsection game.

Woodland Hills 48, Penn-Trafford 35 — Joi Burleigh and Peyton Pinkey had 10 points apiece as Woodland Hills (10-12) won a nonsection game. Sarah Nguyen scored 10 for the Warriors (7-15), who fell behind 24-9 at halftime.

Blairsville 36, Penns Manor 31 — Rena Enterline scored six of her game-high 20 points in the deciding fourth quarter to lead Blairsville (20-2) to a victory over Penns Manor in the District 6 Heritage Conference championship game at IUP.
