WPIAL basketball playoffs roundup for Feb. 16: Serra Catholic girls win on buzzer-beater

A game-winning 3-pointer from Gigi Mele-Madigan at the buzzer catapulted No. 5 Serra Catholic past No. 12 Riverview, 53-52, in a WPIAL Class 2A first-round girls basketball game at Northgate on Friday night.

Mele-Madigan and Rylan German each finished with 16 points to lead the way for the Eagles (15-7). Shannon Sullivan added 10 points in the victory.

Serra Catholic trailed 41-31 with 6 minutes, 47 seconds remaining before it went on a 13-3 run to tie the score at 44-44 with 2:29 on the clock.

Alyssa Cappa scored 18 points for the Raiders (11-11). Sydney McDonough chipped in with 15.

The Eagles will move on to the quarterfinals to face fourth-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic (12-10) on Thursday.

Brentwood 54, Fort Cherry 18 — Morgan Dryburgh had 15 points and Natalie Murrio added 13 as No. 7 Brentwood (16-6) won a Class 2A first-round game. The Spartans will play No. 2 OLSH (19-2) in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Bri Shaffer scored eight points for No. 10 Fort Cherry (12-11).

California 50, Washington 40 — Bailey Vig had 23 points to pace No. 9 California (15-7) to a Class 2A first-round win. California will play No. 1 Vincentian Academy (20-1) in the quarterfinals.

Leechburg 75, Frazier 60 — Blue Devils senior Mikayla Lovelace went over the 2,000-point career scoring mark with 37 points as No. 6 Leechburg (19-4) broke open a close game late for a Class 2A first-round win at West Allegheny. Lovelace added 12 rebounds. Brooke Poling, Frazier's all-time leading scorer, led the No. 11 Commodores (13-10) with 20 points.

Chartiers Valley 50, Armstrong 40 — Megan McConnell's 23 points led No. 6 Chartiers Valley (17-6) to a Class 5A first-round win at Fox Chapel. The Colts will play West Allegheny in the quarterfinals.

Gateway 39, Ringgold 28 — Led by 18 points from Lexi Jackson and 12 from Jordan Edwards, No. 7 Gateway (20-3) won a Class 5A first-round game at Baldwin.

Hampton 51, Connellsville 26 — Laryn Edwards had 24 points and Ali Collins added 16 as No. 5 Hampton (19-4) won a Class 5A first-round game at Gateway. Hampton will play Mars in the quarterfinals.

Mars 54, Uniontown 33 — Lauren Wasylson had 18 points and Tai Johnson added 17 as No. 4 Mars (18-5) won a Class 5A first-round game at Gateway.

Oakland Catholic 63, South Fayette 42 — Jayde Boyd had 16 points to lift No. 8 Oakland Catholic (15-8) to a Class 5A first-round win at Upper St. Clair. Alexis Sestric had 14 points, Sierra DeAngelo added 13 and Cierra Christian scored 12 for the Eagles. Jordan Head scored 14 for No. 9 South Fayette (12-9).

Thomas Jefferson 84, Montour 45 — In the Class 5A first round at Upper St. Clair, Alyssa DeAngelo had 20 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead No. 2 Thomas Jefferson (20-3) to a victory. Marina Petruzzi and Jenna Clark each had 16 points for the Jaguars, who will play Gateway in the quarterfinals. Courtney Tomas had 25 points for No. 15 Montour (9-14).

Trinity 54, Plum 31 — The No. 16 Mustangs had leads of 7-0 and 12-2 before top-seeded Trinity caught fire en route to a Class 5A first-round win at West Allegheny.

The Hillers (20-3) took the lead for the first time on a 3-pointer by Alayna Cappelli with 2:22 left in the first half. The basket was part of a 24-0 Trinity run that carried over into the third period. Cappelli and Riley DeRubbo had 16 each to lead the Hillers.

West Allegheny 58, Woodland Hills 41 — Hannah Lindemuth had 28 points and Grace Faulk added 15 to guide No. 3 West Allegheny (17-6) to a Class 5A first-round win at Fox Chapel. Ciara Turner had 12 points for No. 14 Woodland Hills (10-13).

Boys basketball

Aliquippa 62, South Side Beaver 45 — MJ Devonshire had 23 points to lift No. 4 Aliquippa (16-6) to a Class 3A first-round victory at Ambridge. Jake McDougal had 23 points for No. 13 South Side Beaver (9-13).

Carlynton 70, Brownsville 55 — In a Class 3A preliminary-round game, DeQuay Canton had 28 points to guide Carlynton (9-14) to victory. The Cougars will play No. 1 Lincoln Park (15-6) in the first round Monday. Shandon Marshall had 32 points for Brownsville (11-12).

Riverside 32, Burrell 27 —- The No. 12 Panthers held No. 5 Burrell scoreless for more than eight minutes in the second half to post a Class 3A first-round victory at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. Ty Thellman led Riverside (13-9) with nine points. Donovan Russell scored a game-high 11 for Burrell (10-13).

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 67, Ellwood City 53 — Ryan Feczko had 21 points and Bryan Davidson added 17 as No. 6 Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (12-11) won a Class 3A first-round game at Peters Township. Broc Boariu had 17 points for No. 11 Ellwood City (14-9).

Washington 46, Brentwood 37 — Zahmere Robinson had 18 points and Jordan Swart added 17 as No. 3 Washington (18-5) won a Class 3A first-round game at Peters Township. The Little Prexies will play CWNC on Thursday. DeAngelo Briscoe had 12 points for No. 14 Brentwood (8-13).

Cornell 44, Winchester Thurston 41 — Nadhama Luster had 14 points to lift No. 5 Cornell (17-6) to a Class A first-round win at Northgate. Cornell will play No. 4 Clairton (16-4) in the quarterfinals.

Eden Christian Academy 66, Geibel 39 — Chase Haring had 26 points to guide No. 6 Eden Christian (16-5) to a Class A first-round win at Baldwin. Eden will play No. 3 Union (15-5) on Thursday.

Imani Christian 46, West Greene 39 — DeSean Hubbard had 21 points and Marc Peters added 10 as No. 7 Imani Christian (12-9) won a Class A first-round game at Charleroi. The Saints will play No. 2 Monessen (13-8) on Thursday. Gavin Scott had 18 points for No. 10 West Greene (8-15).

Propel Andrew Street 57, Holy Family 41 — Dareius Davis had 27 points to give No. 8 Propel Andrew Street (17-5) the program's first playoff victory with a Class A first-round win at CWNC. Propel, a second-year team, will play No. 1 Vincentian Academy (15-7) on Thursday.

Tre Harvey had 13 points for No. 9 Holy Family Academy (13-9).
