WPIAL basketball playoffs roundup for Feb. 22: Aliquippa boys advance on buzzer-beater

William Gipson's buzzer beater from 30 feet made the difference as No. 4-seeded Aliquippa defeated Riverside 53-50 in a WPIAL Class 3A boys basketball quarterfinal at Ambridge on Thursday night.

Gipson and Zuriah Fisher each had 10 points, and MJ Devonshire scored 17 for the Quips (17-6).

Ty Thellman scored 15 points to lead No. 12 Riverside (13-10). The Panthers had the ball with 2 seconds left, but a quirky play gave it back to Aliquippa.

Riverside rebounded an Aliquippa miss, but the Panthers' attempt at a length-of-the-court shot hit the ceiling and turned the ball back to the Quips with 1 second remaining.

Gipson then drained the long 3-pointer for the win.

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 47, Washington 34 — Mike Dramble had 15 points and Bryan Davidson added 12 as No. 6 Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (13-11) won a Class 3A quarterfinal at Moon. The Trojans will play Seton LaSalle in the semifinals Monday.

Zahmere Robinson had 14 points for No. 3 Washington (17-6).

Lincoln Park 89, Burgettstown 64 — Keeno Holmes had 34 points and Andrew Wilder added 11 points as No. 1 Lincoln Park (17-6) won a Class 3A quarterfinal at Ambridge.

Thomas Melonja scored 10 points for the Leopards, who will play Aliquippa in the semifinals Monday at a time and site to be determined.

Seton LaSalle 74, Shady Side Academy 52 — George Mike IV had 24 points and Jakob Richardson added 20 as No. 2 Seton LaSalle (18-5) won a Class 3A quarterfinal at Sewickley Academy. The Rebels opened a 12-4 lead.

Jas Fuhrer had 11 points to lead No. 7 Shady Side Academy (14-9).

Cornell 71, Clairton 66 (OT) — Led by Desmond Ross' 20 points, No. 5 Cornell (18-6) earned a Class A quarterfinal victory at Peters Township. Zaier Harrison had 15 points and Nadhama Luster scored 14 for the Raiders, who will play No. 1 Vincentian in the semifinals.

Dom Solomon had 21 points for No. 4 Clairton (16-5).

Imani Christian Academy 61, Monessen 59 (OT) — Deshawn Hubbard scored 22 points, including three 3 of 4 free throws in the final 10 seconds, to lead No. 7 Imani Christian Academy (13-9) over No. 2 Monessen (13-9) in a Class A quarterfinal at Chartiers-Houston. Sam Fairley added 16 points for the Saints. Lyndon Henderson led Monessen with 25 points.

Union 67, Eden Christian 52 — Class A No. 3 Union (16-5) got 24 points from Tre Charles, 17 from Nate Meeks and 13 from Seth Pinkerton to roll past No. 6 Eden Christian (16-6) in a quarterfinal game at Fox Chapel.

Chase Haring led Eden Christian with 27 points.

Union advances to play Imani Christian (13-9) in the semifinals.

Vincentian Academy 62, Propel Andrew Street 51 — Leading just 47-46 entering the fourth quarter, the No. 1 Royals (16-7) used a 25-8 run to finish off a Class A quarterfinal win at Northgate.

Girls basketball

Beaver 63, Belle Vernon 32 — Bella Posset had 17 points and Sydney Barney added 16 as No. 3 Beaver (17-5) won a Class 4A quarterfinal at Canon-McMillan.

Blackhawk 60, Elizabeth Forward 57 (2OT) — Mackenzie Amalia had 15 points and Mady Aulbach and Ava Haddox each scored 14 to lead No. 2 Blackhawk (19-2) to a Class 4A quarterfinal win at Canon-McMillan.

The Cougars will play Beaver in the semifinals Monday at a time and site to be determined.

Bri Spirnak had 24 points for No. 10 Elizabeth Forward (15-8).

Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 49, Ambridge 42 — Kylee Lewandowski scored 23 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead No. 1 Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (20-3) to a Class 4A quarterfinal win. Dani Short added 11 points for the Trojanettes.

Kara Haslett and Dasha Jackson each had 10 points for No. 9 Ambridge (13-11).

Central Valley 62, Keystone Oaks 47 — Kaelyn Underwood had 22 points and Christiane Frye added 21 as No. 5 Central Valley (17-5) won a Class 4A quarterfinal game at West Allegheny. The Warriors will play No. 1 Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in the semifinals.

Jaylen Hoffmann had 15 points and Gillian Piccolino added 15 for No. 4 Keystone Oaks (17-4).

Brentwood 51, OLSH 31 — Anna Betz had 13 points and Natalie Murrio added 11 as No. 7 Brentwood (17-6) upset No. 2 OLSH (19-3) in a Class 2A quarterfinal at Sewickley Academy.

Brentwood opened an 11-3 lead and closed the game on a 17-9 run. The Spartans will play Chartiers-Houston in the semifinals Monday at a time and site to be determined.

Haley Hamilton had 11 points for OLSH.

Chartiers-Houston 52, Leechburg 45 — Alexa Williamson scored 24 points and pulled down 14 rebounds as No. 3 Chartiers-Houston held off a late Leechburg rally in a Class 2A quarterfinal win at West Allegheny. Madison Simpson added 11 points for the defending WPIAL champion Buccaneers (18-5). Mikayla Lovelace led No. 6 Leechburg (19-5) with 22 points.

Vincentian Academy 64, California 31 — Caroline Elliott had 20 points and Katie Bartlett added 16 to guide No. 1 Vincentian Academy (21-1) to a Class 2A quarterfinal victory at Northgate.

Olivia O'Brien added 11 points for the Royals, who will play No. 5 Serra Catholic in the semifinals Monday at a time and site to be determined.

Bailey Vig led No. 9 California (15-8) with 12 points.
