Westmoreland high school lookahead: Week of Feb. 26-March 3

Highlights of the week ahead in Westmoreland high school sports:

MONDAY

Boys basketball

Ligonier Valley (18-4) breezed to an opening-round win in the District 6 Class 3A playoffs, and the No. 2-seeded Rams will face No. 6 Mount Union (14-9) in the semifinals at 7 p.m. at Hollidaysburg.

The winner moves on to the finals Friday at Mt. Aloysius in Cresson.

Hockey

Penn-Trafford (10-9) qualified for the PIHL Class AA postseason, but the Warriors are tied with Shaler (9-8) for fifth in the South/East Division with 20 points apiece. So the teams will play a tiebreaker game to determine playoff seeding. The matchup will be at 6:45 p.m. at UPMC Sports Center in Cranberry.

TUESDAY

Boys basketball

The WPIAL playoffs shift to the semifinals in Class 5A and 2A, and Westmoreland will be well-represented in both with a pair of 8 p.m. games. Third-seeded Franklin Regional (19-4) gets the third meeting with Section 3-5A rival and No. 2 Highlands (18-4) in a 5A game at Fox Chapel, and Class 2A No. 3 Jeannette (19-3) takes on No. 2 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (21-2) at Peters Township.

The winners advance to the finals Friday night at Petersen Events Center. The Class 2A final is set for 5 p.m., and Class 5A at 9.

WEDNESDAY

Boys basketball

Belle Vernon (18-5) will try to secure a WPIAL finals berth as it takes on New Castle (19-4) in the Class 4A semifinals. It is Belle Vernon's first trip to the semifinals since 1998.

THURSDAY

Swimming

The WPIAL championships get underway at Pitt's Trees Pool. Class AAA timed finals begin at 10 a.m., with Class AA at 3 p.m. Events include the 200-yard medley relay, 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle relay.

Girls basketball

The WPIAL championships get underway at Petersen Events Center with the Class 2A final at 5 p.m.

Boys basketball

The first of six WPIAL boys championships at Petersen Events Center features Class A at 7 p.m., followed by 3A at 9.

FRIDAY

Wrestling

The top Class AAA individuals will head to Canon-McMillan for the WPIAL/PIAA Southwest Regional championships.

Boys basketball

Two more WPIAL championships will be played at Pitt: Class 2A at 5 p.m. and Class 5A at 9.

Girls basketball

The WPIAL Class A final gets the day started at the Pete at 3 p.m., with the 4A game at 7.

Swimming

The WPIAL championships continue at Pitt. Events include the 100-yard freestyle, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay.

SATURDAY

Girls basketball

Three girls finals and two boys finals cap WPIAL championship weekend at the Pete. The girls games are: Class 3A (11 a.m.), 5A (3 p.m.) and 6A (7).

Boys basketball

The WPIAL championships conclude with Class 4A at 1 p.m. and 6A at 9.

Wrestling

Action wraps up at the WPIAL Class AAA/PIAA Southwest Regional championships at Canon-McMillan.
