PIAA basketball roundup for March 17: CW North Catholic girls advance to semifinals

Dani Short and Kylee Lewandowski each had 10 points as WPIAL champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic earned a spot in the PIAA girls basketball semifinals.

The Trojans used an 11-4 run to start the second half to secure a 40-30 victory over District 10 champion Villa Maria in a Class 4A quarterfinal at North Hills.

Tess Myers added eight points for the Trojanettes (25-3), who will face District 3 runner-up Berks Catholic (24-5) in the semifinals Tuesdy at a time and site to be determined.

Archbishop Carroll 51, Oakland Catholic 32 — Sierra DiAngelo had 12 points for Oakland Catholic, but the Eagles (19-9) fell short against District 12 third-place team Archbishop Carroll (21-7) in a PIAA Class 5A quarterfinal game at Chambersburg.

Boys basketball

OLSH 69, West Middlesex 60 — Austin Wigley had 18 points and Dante Spadafora scored 17 as WPIAL runner-up OLSH (25-3) defeated District 10 champion West Middlesex (21-7) a PIAA Class 2A quarterfinal at Armstrong.

Daren DiMichele added 15 points for the Chargers, who will get a rematch with section rival Sewickley Academy in the semifinals Tuesday at a time and site to be determined.

The teams split their section matches this season, and Sewickley Academy defeated OLSH in the WPIAL title game.
