Riverview received significant interest for its football coaching vacancy, including a handful of candidates with prior experience leading programs.
The Raiders turned to a candidate with experience leading their program.
Riverview's school board voted earlier this month to bring back Todd Massack, who previously coached the Raiders from 2007-13.
“He's a first-class kind of guy,” athletic director Mario Rometo said. “He's part of the community, he lives in the community, he's been on the staff … and is just really familiar with the school and the kids. It's just a perfect fit, I think. The kids were thrilled to have him back, too.”
Massack replaces Matt Bonislawski, whose position was opened in January after two seasons. Massack was an assistant under Bonislawski, who went 5-14 with one playoff appearance in two seasons at Riverview.
Rometo said 11 candidates applied for the position, including five with previous head coaching experience.
Massack went 20-46 with one playoff appearance in his first tenure with Riverview, with an additional five years as a Raiders assistant sandwiched around that time. He also coached Fox Chapel from 2001-04, compiling an 11-29 record and one playoff appearance.
A 1984 Riverview graduate, Massack played for Chuck Wagner, and his grandfather, Elmer Gross, coached at Oakmont High School from 1948-60.
