Kiski Area junior Jean Starr learned a valuable lesson after a successful freshman season.

It's a lesson she is using as motivation this season.

“I thought I was pretty good after my freshman year, and I didn't work as hard my sophomore season,” Starr said. “As a result, I didn't have the season I expected. It was an eye-opening experience.

“I got too full of myself and didn't think I had to work hard. That's changed this season.”

Her work ethic paid off Friday at the annual Lady Spartan/Wildcat Invitational at Latrobe's Memorial Stadium.

She won the javelin with a throw of 114 feet, 1 inch, was fourth in the shot put with a heave of 34-11 and finished seventh in the discus with a toss of 96-6 12.

“It was a good day,” Starr said. “I had some good throws, and I'm satisfied with my performance: 114 in the javelin and nearly 35 in the shot. It's a good start of the season.”

Starr said her goals are to make it to the PIAA championship meet and, hopefully, earn a spot on the medals podium.

A trio of Kiski Area hurdlers placed in the 300-meter event.

Isabella Harris (49.37 seconds) was third, Bria Giovanelli (49.80) was fourth and Chloe Galo (50.0) was fifth.

Nick Gabrielli placed third in the 800, running 1:59.67. Ethan Newell placed sixth in the discus with a toss of 127-3, and the 3,200 relay teams placed fifth (boys) and third (girls).

Three Highlands athletes earned medals Friday. Cody Rouse placed third in the triple jump (42-3 12 ), C.J. Thimons was fourth in the 1,600 (4.42.64) and Sydney Brown tied for third in the high jump (4-11).
