High school roundup for April 14, 2018: Upper St. Clair’s Casey, Zhang combine on no-hitter

Aochem Zhang and Andrew Casey combined for a no-hitter to lead Upper St. Clair (9-2) to a 13-1 win over Brashear (0-3) in five innings in a nonsection game.

Mick Walsh hit a double, a home run and drove in three runs to lead Upper St. Clair.

Knoch 17, Derry 4 — Alex Altmire went 2 for 2 with a triple and five RBIs as Knoch (6-0, 5-0) scored eight times in the fourth inning on way to defeating Section 1-4A opponent Derry (1-5, 1-4) in a five-inning game. Andy Pipes went 4 for 5 with a triple and three RBIs, and Dylan Swarmer went 3 for 4 for with three RBIs. Josh Ulery was 3 for 3 with two runs scored for Derry.

Blackhawk 16, Highlands 0 — Jarrett Wright went 3 for 3 with four RBIs to lead Blackhawk (7-0) to the nonsection victory at Highlands (2-4). Marco Borello pitched all three innings for the win, giving up one hit.

Armstrong 10, Fox Chapel 6 — The River Hawks' Noah Cyphert broke the game open with a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Fox Chapel lost to Section 1-5A rival Armstrong (2-3, 1-3). The loss marks the Foxes' first section loss of the season and Armstrong's first section win. Alex McRandall homered and drove in three runs, and James Patterson homered and knocked in two for Fox Chapel (4-2, 3-1). Foxes pitcher Jonathan Simon got the loss, striking out two batters and giving up six hits over three innings. Caleb Harriger picked up the win, striking out four batters and walking three through 5 23 innings.

Beaver 11, Valley 6 — The Vikings held an early 2-0 lead before Beaver broke the game open with a six-run second inning in a nonsection matchup. Freshman pitcher John Luke Bailey picked up the loss for Valley (5-3, 3-0), giving up eight hits and 10 runs over 4 13 innings. Jake NcNabb singled, doubled and drove in three runs, and Shane Demharter singled twice and added an RBI for the Vikings. Beaver (4-3, 2-3) pitcher Dom Petrella picked up the win.

Gateway 17, Woodland Hills 7 — Marc Caggiano hit a grand slam, and Justin Stancovich hit a two-run home run to lead Gateway (4-1, 3-1) to a Section 3-5A win over Woodland Hills (2-3, 1-3).

Softball

Belle Vernon 1, South Fayette 0 — Bailey Parshall struck out 13 in a two-hit shutout and went 4 for 4 at the plate as Belle Vernon (5-2, 3-2) beat South Fayette (3-5, 1-3) in Section 2-4A. Jordan French knocked in the game's only run in the third inning. Marg Iagnemma gave up six hits and struck out seven in a hard-luck loss.

Derry 8, Uniontown 7 — Derry (2-4, 1-3) rallied from a five-run deficit to defeat Uniontown (2-5, 1-3) in Section 1-4A. Kam Kelly scored three times, and Chelsea Bisi hit a solo home run for Derry. Lindsey Merschat went 3 for 3 for Uniontown.

Kiski Area 6, Plum 3 — After starting the season with a three-game losing streak, the Cavaliers have rallied to win their last two Section 1-5A matchups.

Kelsey Sofaly tripled to lead Kiski Area (2-3, 2-3). Alexa Nagy, Courtney Moyer and Kasandra Cessna doubled for the Cavaliers. Pitcher Megan Andree picked up the win. Makenzie Lake doubled and tripled, and Sidney Young doubled for Plum (4-3, 3-3). Pitcher Abbey Froehlich got the loss for the Mustangs.

North Allegheny 3, Shaler 2 — Regan Brodine hit the only extra base for North Allegheny (6-3, 4-0) in a Section 3-6A win over Shaler (2-4, 2-3). Ashley Adams earned the win on the mound for the Tigers, who scored the eventual game-winning run in the fourth-inning.
