WPIAL athletes to wrap up Penn Relays competition in Saturday’s 3 things to watch in high school sports

The oldest and largest track and field competition in the U.S. concludes Saturday at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

Some of the top track and field competitors in the WPIAL have made their way to the eastern part of the state for the Penn Relays.

Ayden Owens of North Allegheny will take part in the 400-meter hurdles Saturday as the event winds down.

How have some of the other WPIAL athletes fared?

Zach Gehm of Seneca Valley finished seventh in the discus with a throw of 52.86 meters.

Maura Huwalt of South Park finished eighth in the discus with a throw of 44.23 meters.

Savannah Shaw of Upper St. Clair finished third in the mile with a time of 4:55.74.

Molly Mangan of Mt. Lebanon finished 14th in 400 hurdles with a time of 1:03.19.

Gionna Quarzo of Brownsville finished 15th in the 3,000-meter with a time of 10:08.71.

Saturday in the south

It will be a busy afternoon of baseball in Section 1-2A. Three make-up games will take place, including two with playoff implications.

The top two teams go head-to-head in McDonald as Fort Cherry (6-2) hosts Carmichaels (7-1). The Mighty Mikes are looking to take a big step toward a section championship while the host Rangers attempt to forge a first-place tie.

The Rangers have dropped two section games, including a 10-4 decision in Greene County. Matt Barrish had three hits for the Mighty Mikes, who blew open a close game with five runs in the sixth.

While those two teams battle for first, there is a three-way log jam behind them with California (5-3), Chartiers-Houston (5-4) and Burgettstown (5-5). On Saturday, the Trojans hosts Burgettstown. In their first meeting, the Trojans rolled the Blue Devils, 13-5.

Busy week concludes

A lot of teams have been able to catch up on make-up games with some good weather this week. Four Section 1-6A softball teams will conclude busy weeks on Saturday in the South Hills.

First-place Baldwin looks to keep its lead when the Highlanders host upstart Upper St. Clair. The Highlanders (7-1) have a half-game lead over Canon-McMillan (7-2) .

Meanwhile, Upper St. Clair (3-5) has dropped four straight as the Panthers try to make the WPIAL softball playoffs for the first time since 1999.

The other big game Saturday in Section 1-6A has Mt. Lebanon (5-4) visiting Peters Township (4-4).

This is the Blue Devils' fourth game this week and third in a row, having edged Bethel Park and losing big to Canon-McMillan.

Mt. Lebanon edged Peters Township, 1-0, in early April. The Indians also are playing their third game in three days after beating Brashear and losing to Bethel Park the last two days.
