High school roundup for May 3, 2018: Blackhawk baseball clinches 3rd straight section title

Marco Borello and John Nixon each knocked in two runs to help Blackhawk claim a third-straight section title with a 6-5 win over South Fayette in a Section 2-4A baseball game Thursday.

Winning pitcher Mike Turconi, Andy McClymonds and Carson Gray all went 3 for 4 for the Cougars (15-0, 13-0), who have reached the playoffs 17 straight seasons.

Hopewell 6, Beaver 3 — Joey Rock homered and threw a six-hitter with nine strikeouts as Hopewell (10-8, 8-5) won in Section 2-4A.

Belle Vernon 10, Keystone Oaks 1 — Josh Hoffman hit two home runs and had three RBIs as Belle Vernon (10-4, 9-4) won in Section 3-4A.

Ringgold 16, McGuffey 1 (4 inn.) — In Section 3-4A, Bo Haines was 3 for 3 with five RBIs and Chase Angotti was 3 for 3 with four RBIs as No. 4 Ringgold (13-2, 12-2) captured the section title. Luke Winterbottom was 4 for 4 with two RBIs, and Jake Mayer was 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

Franklin Regional 3, Thomas Jefferson 1 — Zach Seaman was 2 for 3 with two RBIs to help Franklin Regional (12-3, 10-2) win a Section 3-5A game.

Burrell 12, East Allegheny 0 (5 inn.) — Jake Okapal, Zach Miller and Drew Cambal combined to throw a no-hitter for the Bucs (8-2, 7-2) in a Section 1-3A win over East Allegheny (0-11, 0-10). Okapal pitched the first three innings and struck out seven. Zach Miller struck out two in the fourth, and Drew Cambal struck out the side in the fifth. Burrell scored 10 runs in the first inning. Trent Valochek doubled for the Bucs, and Nick Hwostow singled and drove in two runs.

Shady Side Academy 12, South Allegheny 2 (5 inn.) — John Salvitti was 4 for 4 with four RBIs as Shady Side Academy (6-7, 5-5) won in Section 1-3A.

Southmoreland 6, Mt. Pleasant 4 — Max Zimmerman and Ben Zimmerman each had three hits, and Travis Sipple earned the win as Southmoreland (2-14, 1-11) was victorious in Section 3-3A. George Tetteris was 3 for 4, and Joe Shrum had two RBIs for Mt. Pleasant (7-6, 7-5).

OLSH 3, Freedom 2 — Winning pitcher Jeff Zick tripled, and Patrick Brogan and Allex Santacroce each doubled to help OLSH (9-7, 7-6) win in Section 2-2A.

Serra Catholic 9, Brentwood 0 — Winning pitcher Nate Piontka and Zach Bowen each hit two home runs as No. 1 Serra Catholic (18-0, 14-0) won in Section 3-2A. Ben Bowen also homered in the win.

Ligonier Valley 14, Saltsburg 1 (5 inn.) — Ethan Boring was 2 for 3 with two home runs and seven RBIs, and Andrew Kuzemchak was 4 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs as Ligonier Valley (10-5, 7-3) rolled to a Heritage Conference win.

Softball

Fox Chapel 15, Allderdice 0 (4 inn.) — Emma Humes doubled, drove in two runs and was the winning pitcher in the Foxes' Section 2-6A win over Allderdice. Krystyna Burdelski tripled, singled twice and drove in three runs, and Grace Katz singled and had three RBIs for Fox Chapel (5-8, 4-6).

North Allegheny 6, North Hills 3 — Brooke Serbin hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to give No. 4 North Allegheny (13-6, 9-1) a Section 3-6A win.

Seneca Valley 10, Butler 0 (5 inn.) — Claire Zimmerman threw a no-hitter as No. 5 Seneca Valley (10-5, 7-3) won a Section 3-6A game. Madison Hans had three RBIs.

Gateway 2, Greensburg Salem 1 — Emma Kennedy's two RBIs in the first inning held up as Gateway (7-6, 7-6) won in Section 1-5A. Liz O'Neal had a double for Greensburg Salem (7-8, 6-6), which was limited to three hits by Gators pitcher Maura Ryan.

Plum 14, Armstrong 4 (5 inn.) — MacKenzie Lake belted three homers and drove in six runs to help Plum (8-6, 7-6) move into a three-way tie for third in the Section 1-5A standings with a victory over Armstrong (2-12, 2-11). Jillian Durst homered and drove in a pair of runs for the Mustangs, who led 8-0 after the first inning.

Montour 11, Chartiers Valley 6 — Bella Magliocco knocked in three runs, and Izzy Mannino and Tatem Minear each had two RBIs as Montour (5-8, 4-7) won in Section 3-5A.

Indiana 8, Derry 3 — Madison Barker was 3 for 4 with a home run, and Audrey Barbus also homered as Indiana (9-4, 7-3) defeated Derry (3-8, 2-7) in Section 1-4A. Gianna Copelli and Riley Watson doubled for Derry.

Mt. Pleasant 19, Uniontown 0 (4 inn.) — Christiana Czegan was 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead No. 1 Mt. Pleasant (14-0, 10-0) to a Section 1-4A win. Meadow Uncapher and Mary Smithnosky each had two hits, a homer and three RBIs.

Elizabeth Forward 11, Keystone Oaks 1 (5 inn.) — Bri Sersedic and Anna Resnik each had three hits as No. 4 Elizabeth Forward (14-3, 8-3) won in Section 2-4A. Kailey Larcinese tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts. The Warriors won 13-4 in the second game of the doubleheader. Cassidy Angle and winning pitcher Alexis Argyros each had three RBIs.

Yough 2, South Fayette 1 — Kierra Waywood threw a one-hitter with four strikeouts to lead No. 2-ranked Yough in a Section 2-4A victory. The win gave the Cougars their fourth straight section title.

Sammie McGhee had two hits, and Aubrie Mance and Kaylyn Odelli had RBIs in a two-run first inning for Yough (14-2, 11-0).

Freeport 5, Deer Lakes 3 — Claire Crytzer hit a game-tying two-run homer in the top of the seventh, then Maya Borghol had a sacrifice fly and Jenna Manke hit an RBI single in the ninth to help the No. 2 Yellowjackets win a Section 1-3A game.

Ashleigh Schmidt pitched three innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for the Yellowjackets (12-0, 10-0), who completed an undefeated section slate.

Marleen Meyer had a two-run double in the sixth that gave Deer Lakes (4-6, 3-6) a 3-1 lead, and Katelynn Blair had three hits, including a double.

Burrell 12, Valley 2 (5 inn.) — Cara Fiore had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs for Burrell (9-4, 8-2) in a Section 1-3A win. Kayla Santucci and Brittany Dunn had three hits apiece for the Bucs, and Lea Coffman had a pair of hits and two RBIs. Rylee Gatto had an RBI double for Valley (1-8, 1-7), and Lauren Schrock singled in a run.

South Park 9, Southmoreland 4 — In Section 3-3A, Kaitlin Morrison homered, and Charlyn Blackburn and Kaitlyn Pavlick each had two RBIs as No. 1 South Park (11-1, 10-0) earned a win. Maegan Shetterly was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, and Faith Miller hit a two-run homer for Southmoreland (7-4, 7-3).

Serra Catholic 5, OLSH 1 — Elizabeth Quattrone and Elise Winkler each had triples, and winning pitcher Rebekah Pais doubled as Serra Catholic (10-3, 8-1) won in Section 1-2A.

Monessen 9, Jefferson-Morgan 1 — Mattie Telegraphis was 4 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs as No. 1 Monessen (11-1, 10-1) won in Section 2-A.

Leechburg 9, Jeannette 2 — Daesha Knight had three hits, and Morgan Pierce threw a four-hitter with seven strikeouts as No. 3 Leechburg (11-3, 10-1) won a Section 3-A game. Taylor-Lynn Finken hit a two-run homer for Jeannette (3-7, 3-7).

Riverview 5, Bishop Canevin 3 — Alivia Acierno doubled and drove in two runs for the Raiders in a Section 3-A win. Anne Betler singled three times and had one RBI, and Carys Kenny-Howell picked up the win for Riverview (10-3, 8-3). Clare McMahon doubled and singled to lead Bishop Canevin (5-5, 4-5).

St. Joseph 15, Ellis School 1 (5 inn.) — Calley Neelan had four hits, including two doubles and one RBI for the Spartans in a Section 3-A victory. Serena Edgar and Molly Coleman each had a double and RBI. Anna Swierzewski struck out eight to pick up the win for St. Joseph (8-2, 7-2). Ellis School drops to 0-11 overall and in section play.

Belle Vernon 11, Canon-McMillan 0 — Mekenzie Sokol had a double, home run and four RBIs as Class 4A No. 3 Belle Vernon (14-2) won a nonsection game at Class 6A Canon-McMillan (9-4). Bailey Parshall had three hits and two RBIs and threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts.
