WPIAL holds 23 top seeds for state track championships

WPIAL athletes own the state’s top seed in 23 events entering the PIAA track and field championships that start Friday in Shippensburg.

The PIAA posted qualifying times Sunday.

North Allegheny senior Ayden Owens has the state’s top mark in three Class AAA boys events: 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and long jump. Combined, Avonworth/Northgate sisters Hunter and Hayden Robinson lead three individual Class AAA girls events and their 1,600-meter relay team also is ranked first in the state.

Shady Side Academy’s Melissa Riggins owns the top seed for both the 800 and 1,600 in Class AA girls.

Class AAA boys

100: Alex Trower, Penn Hills

110 hurdles: Ayden Owens, North Allegheny

300 hurdles: Ayden Owens, North Allegheny

800: Matt Busche, Franklin Regional

3200: Noah Beveridge, Butler

Long jump: Ayden Owens, North Allegheny

Discus: Zach Gehm, Seneca Valley

3200 relay: Seneca Valley

Class AAA girls

100: Hayden Robinson, Avonworth/Northgate

200: Hunter Robinson, Avonworth/Northgate

400: Hunter Robinson, Avonworth/Northgate

800: Maddie Salek, West Allegheny

100 hurdles: Jayla Ellis, Oakland Catholic

1600 relay: Avonworth/Northgate

3200 relay: Butler

Class AA boys

1600: Tristan Forsythe, Winchester Thurston

110 hurdles: Daniel Layton, Waynesburg

300 hurdles: Michael Tomlin, Shady Side Academy

High jump: Darius Johnson, Valley

Class AA girls

800: Melissa Riggins, Shady Side Academy

1600: Melissa Riggins, Shady Side Academy

100 hurdles: Brenna Cavanaugh, Bentworth

Shot put: Maura Huwalt, South Park
