While the WPIAL Final Four takes place Tuesday in the four lowest baseball classifications, Class 6A and 5A teams hit the diamond for quarterfinal games.
In Class 6A, defending champion Pine-Richland will face Section 2 champion Hempfield on the turf at West Mifflin. It is the second meeting of the season between the two, with the Rams edging the Spartans, 2-1, back in March.
It is the third meeting between Section 1 playoff teams Butler and Central Catholic Tuesday at Boyce-Mayview in Upper St. Clair. The Vikings swept the season series with a pair of close, low-scoring wins 3-1 and 3-2.
The other two second-round games in the highest classification match Section 3 champ Bethel Park against North Allegheny at Boyce-Mayview and Plum battling Canon-McMillan at North Allegheny.
All four 6A second-round baseball games will be broadcast on the TribLive High School Sports Network .
Class 5A baseball quarterfinals
There will be a new champion crowned in Class 5A after 2017 winner Latrobe fell in Round 1. Round 2 features four section champs, along with the runner-up from a year ago.
Mars lost to Latrobe in the first Class 5A title game last year 6-2. Two wins shy of getting back to the title game, the Fightin' Planets take on Section 3 winner Laurel Highlands at West Mifflin.
Section 1 champion North Hills faces Franklin Regional. The Indians have won seven of eight, while the Panthers were victorious in eight of nine.
Two 5A games go Primetime as Moon takes on Hampton at North Allegheny at 7 p.m., while section rivals West Allegheny and Chartiers Valley square off at 7 p.m. at Boyce-Mayview.
Three of the four 5A quarterfinals games can be heard on the TribLive High School Sports Network .
Who is title match bound?
Only four teams remain in Class AAA and AA in the fight for district boys volleyball gold, with the semifinals set for Tuesday.
In Class AAA, three of the four remaining teams are from Section 2, including defending champ and top seed North Allegheny. The Tigers face Butler and try to make it 3-0 against the Golden Tornado.
The other semifinal match pits Seneca Valley against Section 1 champ Bethel Park.
Both Class AAA semifinals are at North Hills.
North Allegheny is the site of the Class AA Final Four where top seed Derry will face Montour and Deer Lakes, fresh off ousting defending champion Beaver County Christian in the quarterfinals, will take on Ambridge.
