The Mars boys lacrosse team nearly made WPIAL history Tuesday evening.

No team from District 7 has ever reached the PIAA boys or girls lacrosse championship game.

The Fightin' Planets took District 1's Strath Haven to overtime before falling 12-11 in the PIAA Class AA semifinals at Cumberland Valley.

Nicky Palermo scored in overtime to give Strath Haven the win.

Mars trailed 10-8 early in the fourth quarter before Mike Doyle scored with 7 minutes, 11 seconds left.

After Strath Haven scored to make it 11-9 with 6:29 remaining, Doyle scored on a behind-the-back shot with 2:54 left to make it 11-10.

Anthony Grieco then scored on a pass from Cade Hetzler on the next possession to tie the game with 2:46 remaining in regulation.

Hetzler, Grieco and Hayden Vasbinder all had three goals for Mars.

The game was delayed twice for nearly 90 minutes because of lightning.

Mars, the WPIAL champion, finished the season 19-2.

Strath Haven (19-5) will play District 1 champion Bishop Shanahan in the championship game Saturday at West Chester.
