On Nov. 4, Bishop Canevin beat Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 3-0, in the 2017 WPIAL girls volleyball championship match. It took nearly eight months, but the Chargers have exacted revenge on the Crusaders.
In one of the closest cup chases of all time, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart edged Bishop Canevin by only four points to claim the Trib HSSN Class 2A Sports Cup.
The TribLive High School Sports Network Cup is a yearlong competition to determine the top WPIAL sports program in each classification. It awards points for section/conference wins; district/state playoff wins and district/state championships and runners-up.
Schools can earn 1 point for section/conference wins, 2 points for any postseason victory, 10 points for a WPIAL championship, 5 points for district runner-up, 20 points for a PIAA championship and 15 points for state runner-up.
OLSH charged to victory amazingly without winning one WPIAL or PIAA championship.
As mentioned above, the girls volleyball team came close before falling to Bishop Canevin.
Also, there was a silver cloud following the OLSH boys basketball team as they reached both the district and state championship game but fell short in both. The Chargers lost to Sewickley Academy for a second straight year in the WPIAL 2A finals 63-59, and then they won four straight games on the Road to Hershey only to lose to Philadelphia power Constitution, 81-71, in the state title game.
“2018 was truly a wonderful season for our boys program,” said boys’ basketball coach Mike Rodriguez. “Our players developed strong bonds and grew and matured as our season went on. This years team possessed many of the intangibles needed for a long run in the playoffs; a strong work ethic, unity, and a belief that they were never out of any game. A truly special group of young men.”
But the key to the cup for OLSH was steady contributions from various teams, including football, boys and girls soccer, girls cross country, girls basketball, baseball and softball.
Here are the Top 10 finishers in Class 2A for the Trib HSSN Sports Cup:
1. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart — 134 points
