North Allegheny decathlete Ayden Owens 13th at IAAF World U20 after Day 1

A disqualification in the 400 meters left North Allegheny decathlete Ayden Owens in 13th place after Day 1 of the IAAF World 20 Championships in Finland.
Owens, making his international track debut, placed second in the 100 meters, fifth in both the long jump and shot put, and sixth in the high jump. In Tuesday’s final event, Owens was initially credited with a personal-best 48.70-second finish in the 400 meters, but later was listed as disqualified.
The recent North Allegheny graduate has 3,176 points.
The disqualification cost Owens 876 points, an amount that would have moved him into fourth place overall in the decathlon standings. The 10-event competion concludes Wednesday with the 110 hurdles, javelin, pole vault, 1,500 meters and discus.
Australia’s Ashley Moloney led with 4,319 points. American Kyle Garland was fifth with 3,939.
Owens, a five-time PIAA hurdles champion, is competing at the event for Puerto Rico .
