High school notebook: Norwin’s Rizzo nearing college decision

Gianni Rizzo is just about ready to make his college decision.
The incoming Norwin senior football player has more than a dozen Division I scholarship offers, primarily from FCS programs, but has narrowed his list of potential destinations to five. They are Youngstown State, Albany, Elon, Holy Cross and Fordham.
“I want to get it done before camp,” he said, “before the season starts for sure. I want to get it taken care of so I can focus on the season.”
Rizzo, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker and wide receiver, will have a key two-way role for the Knights, who will play in the WPIAL’s new-look Class 6A that includes just eight other teams.
He said he could decide before August, perhaps after he returns from vacation.
More pursuers for Fenton
Latrobe basketball standout Reed Fenton continues to draw attention from colleges as the AAU season surges through the summer months.
Fenton last week picked up offers from Bowling Green, Drexel and Fairfield. Earlier this month, Holy Cross, Marist, American and Dartmouth offered.
His other offers are from Drake and Navy.
Fellow Latrobe player Bryce Butler, who also will be a senior, was offered by West Liberty.
Fenton and Butler each averaged more than 20 points last season for Latrobe and also are teammates on the PK Flash.
More recruiting
Greensburg Salem baseball player Andrew Rosenberg will continue his playing career at Westmoreland County Community College.
AAU nationals
A pair of local girls basketball players will be in Georgia this week competing in the Elite is Earned Shootout and The National Championship AAU tournaments in Cartersville and Atlanta.
Guards Olivia Gribble of Norwin and Melina Maietta of Greensburg Central Catholic play for the Western PA Bruins Nesbit team. Both will be juniors.
Leopold injured
Incoming Franklin Regional senior Nick Leopold did not play in the WCCA 7-on-7 championship as he nurses a stress fracture in his foot.
Leopold, who wore a walking boot on the sidelines, is expected to be a key receiver and defensive back for the Panthers. He suffered the injury at the Duquesne prospect camp.
He hopes to be back for training camp.
