Zambruno sisters pace Greensburg Central Catholic girls golf to Westmoreland County tournament title

Greensburg Central Catholic proved Wednesday that it might be the Class AA girls golf team to beat, not only in the WPIAL, but the state.

Led by the Zambruno sisters, Greensburg Central Catholic breezed to the team title at the third annual Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association tournament at Champion Lakes Golf Course. This was the first year the county coaches awarded a team title in the girls tournament.

The Centurions finished with 159 points, followed by Penn-Trafford (190) and Franklin Regional (201).

Greensburg Central Catholic has won three consecutive WPIAL titles and has finished second in the PIAA tournament the past two seasons.

Freshman Meghan Zambruno took medalists honors by shooting an even-par 37. She birdied three holes (Nos. 2, 5 and 7).

Senior Abby Zambruno placed second with a 2-over 39, while freshman Ella Zambruno, Meghan’s twin, was third with a 4-over 41. It was the second time Abby finished second in the event. She finished behind older sister Olivia in 2016 and was fourth in 2017.

Penn-Trafford’s Lauren Barber finished fourth with a 5-over 42, edging Greensburg Central Catholic’s Hanna Norton, who also shot a 5-over 42. Barber finished fourth on a scorecard tiebreaker. Penn-Trafford’s Ava Green was sixth with a 46.

“I did well, I stayed away from the sand traps,” Meghan Zambruno said. “I had a double (bogey), but I made some birdies that countered that. I was pretty consistent.

“I hit it to a foot at No. 2 and reached No. 5 (par 5) in two and just missed an eagle putt. It hit it to within 10 feet and made it on No. 7.”

Abby Zambruno also was pleased with her round and was OK with losing the title to her sister this time.

“I didn’t play well at Hannastown last year; Wednesday was a lot better,” Abby Zambruno said. “We all played well as a team. Everyone has been playing well on the team. I’m happy with what I shot.”

Even though the team score was based on the top four scores, Greensburg Central Catholic’s Angelika Dewicki also finished in the top 10. She was seventh with a 47, edging Franklin Regional’s Baylee Horvath (47).

Ninth place went to Norwin’s Mallory Donofrio, who shot 49 and edged Southmoreland’s Olivia Ledbetter (49) with a scorecard tiebreaker.

“I played pretty good, considering the last time I played this course,” Ella Zambruno said. “The last time my irons weren’t on, today they were. It was good how well we played, and we’re excited to get a chance to play with Abby her senior season.”

Meghan Zambruno added: “We’re so happy to be able to play with Abby this year. We knew this would be a good year, and I expect us to play well.”

And if the Zambrunos and their teammates continue to play well, a PIAA team title could be in their future.
