High school roundup for Sept. 18, 2018: No. 2 Quaker Valley boys blank No. 1 North Catholic

The Quaker Valley boys soccer team appears to have hit its stride.
After starting the season 0-3 against top-flight nonsection opponents, the Quakers have won five straight games by shutout, including a 5-0 victory over top-ranked North Catholic (5-1, 4-1) on Tuesday.
Rowan Kriebel and Thomas David scored twice, and Will Andrews added a goal for the No. 2-ranked Quakers (5-3, 5-0), who have outscored their last five opponents 45-0.
Peters Township 1, Baldwin 0 — Brian Bruzdewicz scored to guide Peters Township (5-2, 4-1) to a Section 2-4A win.
West Allegheny 2, Blackhawk 0 — Nathan Dragisich scored twice for No. 1 West Allegheny (9-0, 5-0) in a Section 2-3A victory.
South Fayette 7, West Mifflin 0 — Chad Eldrige scored three times to lift South Fayette (4-4, 3-2) to a Section 4-3A win.
Elizabeth Forward 3, Steel Valley 0 — Andrew Smith scored twice as Elizabeth Forward (4-3, 4-1) won in Section 1-2A.
Waynesburg 4, Beth-Center 0 — Gavin Benson notched a hat trick to guide Waynesburg (6-2, 4-1) to a Section 3-2A win.
Serra Catholic 3, St. Joseph 2 (OT) — Jimmy Moon scored five minutes into overtime as Serra Catholic (3-1, 2-1) won a Section 2-A game. Chris Salemi and Josiah Pais also scored for the Eagles.
Carlynton 10, Aquinas Academy 0 — Carnel Kerr scored five goals for Carlynton (6-2, 3-2) in a Section 3-A victory.
Southmoreland 3, Brownsville 2 (OT) — Brett Glowacki scored on an assist from Noah Kinter with four minutes remaining in the first overtime as Southmoreland won a Section 3-2A game.
Ricky Keys and Kinter also scored, and Zak Holoman and Glowacki added assists for the Scotties (3-3, 3-2). Nick Climes scored with two minutes left in regulation for Brownsville, which fell to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in section play. Eli Ruffcorn also scored for the Falcons.
Penn-Trafford 2, Penn Hills 0 — Noah Schlessinger and Lukas Johnson scored for Penn-Trafford () in a Section 3-4A victory.
Latrobe 4, Woodland Hills 1 — Michael Hook, Nolan Augostini, Matt Henderson and Bryce Bolish scored to lift Latrobe (5-2, 5-1) to a Section 3-4A win.
Franklin Regional 9, McKeesport 1 — Justin LeDonne had two goals as No. 2-ranked Franklin Regional (7-0, 6-0) rolled to a Section 4-3A victory.
Deer Lakes 2, Mt. Pleasant 1 — Colton Spence and Michael Sullivan scored first-half goals, and Class AA No. 3 Deer Lakes held on for a Section 2-2A victory over No. 4 Mt. Pleasant.
Spence added an assist, while Austin Mrvantz made five saves for Deer Lakes (7-0-1, 4-0-1).
Brad Tait scored one goal for Mt. Pleasant (4-2, 3-2), the defending section champion.
Kiski Area 2, Highlands 1 — Owen Zimmerman scored twice, with the game-winner coming with three minutes remaining, to lift Kiski Area (4-3, 4-2) past Highlands (3-5, 3-3) in a battle between Section 1-AAA third-place teams. Gabe Norris scored to give the Rams a 1-0 halftime lead.
Burrell 4, Freeport 1 — Layne Seskey scored a pair of goals and added an assist as the Bucs rolled to a big win over Section 2-AA rival Freeport (5-3, 3-2). Jake Guerrini added a pair of goals and Josh Mueller notched an assist for Burrell (2-3-2, 2-3). Goalkeeper Dom Ferra tallied eight saves for the Bucs. Stevie Teorsky scored the Yellowjackets’ lone goal and keeper Luke Heider had six saves.
Knoch 3, Indiana 2 — Jeremiah Smith scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals to lift Knoch past Section 1-AAA rival Indiana (3-5, 3-3). Ian Robb led off the scoring with a first-half goal for Knoch (3-4-2, 2-3-1).
Serra Catholic 3, St. Joseph 2 (OT) — Serra Catholic’s Jimmy Moon scored on a long shot five minutes into overtime to give the Eagles the Section 2-A win over St. Joseph. Daniel Fabregás scored two goals off of two Eli Swierczewski assists to lead St. Joseph (0-7, 0-4).
Girls soccer
Belle Vernon 4, Greensburg Salem 0 — Freshman forward Morgan Einodshofer scored two goals, and Autumn Forte and Isabella Laurita each added one as Belle Vernon made it three straight wins with a Section 2-3A victory at Greensburg Salem.
The Leopards (4-1, 3-0) also posted their third shutout of the season. Greensburg Salem (4-2, 4-1) had a four-game winning streak halted.
Laurita’s score came on a penalty kick in the 69th minute.
South Park 4, Yough 0 — Danielle DeProspo and Cassidy Zandier scored as No. 1 South Park (6-1, 5-0) beat visiting Yough (3-2, 2-2) in a Section 3-2A game.
Boys golf
• At the Section 4-AAA qualifier at Willowbrook Country Club, Franklin Regional’s Palmer Jackson earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73. Teammates Chuck Tragesser (75) and Michael Wareham (78) also finished below the target score of 82 to advance to the WPIAL semifinals.
• Belle Vernon’s Jake Caldwell shot 1-over 73 to finish first at the Section 2-AAA qualifier at Duck Hollow Golf Club.
Girls volleyball
Leechburg 3, Riverview 0 — Brenna Callahan tallied five kills, three aces and 16 digs to lead the Blue Devils past Section 4-A foe Riverview. Ava Powell finished with nine kills and three aces, Bev Stearman added two kills and three blocks and Ashley Grine notched two kills and two blocks for Leechburg (5-1, 4-1).
Freeport 3, Burrell 0 — Ally DeJidas led No. 1 Freeport with 12 kills, eight service points, four aces and three blocks as the Yellowjackets defeated Burrell in Section 5-AA play. Lauren Lampus added seven kills, 11 service points and two aces. Maddie Clark recorded seven service points and 23 assists for Freeport (4-1, 4-0).
Deer Lakes 3, Apollo-Ridge 0 — Chrissy Saldimarco recorded eight digs and five service points as Deer Lakes cruised to a Section 5-AA win over Apollo-Ridge. Cameron Simurda recorded seven kills and six service points. Kaylee Sciubba added six kills and 18 service points for Deer Lakes (4-2, 4-1).
Knoch 3, Ambridge 0 — Skylar Burkett recorded five kills and 13 service points to lead No. 1 Knoch over Ambridge in Section 4-AAA play. Hannah Rowe added 16 kills and Kennedy Christy recorded nine kills for Knoch (7-0, 5-0).
