The Foxes swept Woodland Hills on Sept. 5 but saw their record drop to 7-2 as they fell to Sewickley Academy, 4-1, on Sept. 7. Lexi Quackenbush and Katie Voigt won in doubles.

Girls volleyball

Fox Chapel girls volleyball opened the season Sept. 4 with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-15) win over Seneca Valley.

“All the girls played well, especially Eras Yager and Jessica Michael,” FC coach Phil O’Keeffe said.

The Foxes hosted Pine-Richland on Sept. 6 and lost 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-17).

“It is still very early in the season, and the girls have made a lot of improvement over last year,” O’Keeffe said. “We’re hoping a few key wins under their belts will give them confidence moving forward in a newer, tougher section than last year.”

Boys soccer

Fox Chapel boys soccer improved to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Section 1-4A with a 7-0 win over Shaler on Sept. 6. Zane Ingram scored three goals to lead the way. Alex Marotte, Tommy Psai, Charlie Smith and Ty Welty also scored. Robby Tabor and Clayton Humbert combined for the shutout in goal.

Girls soccer

Fox Chapel girls soccer fell to Butler, 3-2, on Sept. 5 in the Section 1-4A opener. Sarah Sinnott and Lucy Ream scored for the Foxes, who dropped to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in section play.

Boys golf

In a Section 4-3A tri-match Sept. 6, Fox Chapel beat Franklin Regional, 190-199, and Plum, 199-228.

Amani Dambrosio paced the Foxes with a 37, followed by Gregor Meyer, Aidan Oehrle and Matt Mattioli at 38 and Scott Bitar and Owen McManus at 39.

Shady Side Academy posted a 200-205 win over Hampton in a Section 8-AAA match Sept. 5. Adam Lauer led SSA with a 36. The Indians beat Armstrong, 187-239, on Sept. 6, as Charles Troutman and Brice Delaney each shot a 35. SSA ended the week with a 179-199 nonsection win over North Allegheny on Sept. 7. Troutman shot a 32, and Jas Fuhrer came in at 34.

Field hockey

Fox Chapel field hockey began the season with a 1-0 overtime loss to Ellis School on Sept. 4. The Foxes then posted a 2-1 win over Mt. Lebanon on Sept. 6. Ellie Markel and Sloan Rost scored goals while Marissa Hardiman made 10 saves in goal.

Football

For the second week in a row, the Shady Side Academy offense ran roughshod over an opponent as the Indians crushed Valley by a score of 43-14. SSA led 36-6 at the half and scored early in the third quarter to invoke the mercy rule. Skyy Moore and Dino Tomlin were the catalysts as they hooked up on TDs of 43, 80 and 15 yards. Moore added a 23-yard TD run and a two-point conversion run while Tomlin also had an 89-yard kickoff return for a score. Alex Bellinotti ran for yards for a TD, Ivor Wood scored on a two-point conversion run and Liam Mendham converted three PATs. Moore finished with 159 yards rushing on eight carries and completed six passes for 181 yards. Tomlin had four receptions for 141 yards.

“It was nice to see our team come out and compete,” SSA coach Chuck DiNardo said. “We had some guys step up and make plays early in the game. Mason Tomlin had a big interception in the first quarter that stopped a drive and gave our team the spark of energy we needed. Once we got loosened up, we were able to get some receivers open over the top and use our speed. Hats off to our guys for staying focused on the task at hand and putting together a solid effort against a good Valley team.”

Cross country

Fox Chapel runners took part in the Red, White and Blue Invitational at Schenley Park on Sept. 7. There were 60 teams and 250 runners in both the boys and the girls races.

The Fox Chapel girls finished in second place, with Sarena Seeger finishing second, Grace Sisson in fifth place, Brooke Krally coming in 12th and Annika Urban finishing in 16th place. Two runners won medals in the freshman race as Riley McIntyre was seventh and Gabby Kline finished 11th.

In the boys race, Christian Fitch placed third while Ethan Napolitan took 10th in the boys freshman race.
