High school roundup for Oct. 4, 2018: Canon-McMillan boys top Upper St. Clair

The Section 2-4A title will apparently go down to the wire.

Canon-McMillan avenged an early-season loss to Upper St. Clair on Thursday night, securing a 4-1 win to split the season series and stay in the hunt for the section title.

Steven Dowling, Tommy Samosky, Chris Viveros and Joey Fonagy scored for the Big Macs (11-2, 8-2), who trail No. 3-ranked Upper St. Clair (8-3-2, 8-1-1) by a half-game.

Canon-McMillan will wrap up section play next week against Mt. Lebanon (5-7-1, 5-4) and Peters Township (8-5, 5-4).

Zach Shoemaker scored for Upper St. Clair, which has remaining section games against Baldwin (6-6-1, 3-5-1) and Mt. Lebanon.

Central Catholic 1, Shaler 0 — Gino DeMateo scored to give Central Catholic (4-8-1, 3-7-1) a Section 1-4A win.

Hampton 1, Highlands 0 — Adam Zovko scored, and Josh Winik posted the shutout as Hampton (10-3, 9-2) won in Section 1-3A.

Trinity 7, Albert Gallatin 1 — In Section 3-3A, Mason Pendergast had three goals to guide Trinity (8-5, 5-4) to a victory.

South Fayette 3, Thomas Jefferson 0 — Chad Eldridge, Gavin Eldridge and Jackson DeWitt all scored to lift South Fayette (8-4-1, 7-2-1) to a Section 4-3A victory.

Keystone Oaks 5, Elizabeth Forward 0 — Ryan Vargo, Gio Valforte, Rutger Randall, Nicholas Lykens and Nauraj Karki scored for No. 5 Keystone Oaks (12-0, 11-0) in a Section 1-2A win.

Shady Side Academy 7, Freeport 1 — Walter Navib had a hat trick, and Kenny Shergill added two goals for Shady Side Academy (7-4-1, 7-3-1) in a Section 2-2A win.

Quaker Valley 4, South Side Beaver 0 — Fritz Reiter scored twice, and David Lipton and Dom Reiter added goals as No. 1 Quaker Valley (10-3, 9-0) cruised to a Section 4-2A win. The game was called at halftime because of inclement weather.

Bentworth 5, Chartiers-Houston 4 — Brian Hustava had three goals and two assists for Bentworth (4-9, 3-6) in a Section 4-A win.

Franklin Regional 3, Chartiers Valley 0 — The Franklin Regional boys soccer team locked up the Section 4-3A championship with a victory over Chartiers Valley.

Blake Cooper, Conor Hudson and Justin LeDonne all scored, and Jeremy Lucas posted the shutout for the Panthers (10-0-1, 9-0-1).

Latrobe 8, Penn Hills 1 — Bryce Bolish had three goals and Matt Henderson added two as Latrobe (7-6, 7-5) earned a Section 3-4A victory.

Norwin 5, Woodland Hills 0 — Carter Breen, Nick Flemm, Zach Ullum, Micah Yuricha and Gage Nicholls all scored to give No. 4 Norwin (11-1-1, 9-0-1) a Section 3-4A win.

Deer Lakes 11, Derry 1 — A.J. Dorman and Michael Sullivan each had two goals and an assist as No. 3 Deer Lakes breezed past Derry (2-8, 1-8) in Section 2-AA play. Robert Boyer scored for Derry.

Charleroi 9, Yough 0 — Cullen Woytovich had four goals, as Charleroi (12-0, 10-0) clinched the Section 3-AA title with a victory over Yough (1-9, 1-9). The game was called in the second half because of poor field conditions.

Southmoreland 3, Beth-Center 2 — Brett Glowacki had two goals and an assist and Noah Kinter had a goal and an assist as Southmoreland (7-6, 7-3) won in Section 3-2A.

St. Joseph 12, Jeannette 0 — Daniel Fábregas netted four goals, and Dominic Ferrante scored twice as St. Joseph (6-9, 5-4) cruised to a Section 2-A win over Jeannette (0-7, 0-7). Andrew Sullivan, Seth Jordan, Diesel Losch, Otto Conroy, Paul Shadle and Zach Szep scored one goal each for the Spartans.

Fox Chapel 1, North Allegheny 0 — North Allegheny got the better of Fox Chapel when the Section 1-4A boys soccer teams met Sept. 15.

But the Foxes avenged that setback Thursday with a victory over the Tigers.

The win was Fox Chapel’s fifth in a row and third straight in section play. It also pulled the Foxes (10-5, 7-4) into a tie with North Allegheny (9-4, 7-4) for the fourth and final playoff spot from the section.

The teams played to a scoreless tie through 40 minutes before Tommy Tsai netted the game-winner.

Clayton Humbert stopped six shots for Fox Chapel.

Knoch 2, Kiski Area 0 — Jeremiah Smith scored two goals to lead Knoch over Kiski Area (7-6, 6-5) in Section 1-4A play. Ian Robb and Mark Ciora recorded one assist each for Knoch (5-7-2, 4-6-1).

Springdale 1, Eden Christian 0 — Alex Barch scored and Mike Zolnierczyk made three saves to lead Class A No. 5 Springdale (9-2-1, 8-1-1) to a Section 3 win at Eden Christian (5-4-1, 3-4-1). Mike Mitchell assisted.

Riverview 3, Aquinas Academy 1 — Jacob Sullivan scored twice and Ethan Snyder had a goal and an assist to lead Riverview (3-7, 2-7) to a Section 3-A win over Aquinas Academy (0-13, 0-10). Mark McClelland stopped seven shots, including a penalty shot, and Christoph Hudack had an assist.

Girls soccer

Fox Chapel 3, Plum 0 — Britta Lagerquist scored once and had an assist as Fox Chapel earned a nonsection win. Emma Wecht and Lexie Schutzman added one goal each. Julie Scheffler made two saves for Fox Chapel (5-7). Plum dropped to 9-3 overall.

Riverview 6, Jeannette 0 — Eleni Wyrick tallied a hat trick, and Francesca Lio added two goals and an assist as the Raiders (2-8, 2-5) shut out the Jayhawks (1-8, 0-7) in a Section 1-A match. Alyssa Cappa started in net for Riverview and also scored a goal. Leah Ford tallied two assists for the Raiders.

Girls volleyball

Freeport 3, Valley 0 — Isabella Russo recorded 11 kills, four blocks and two aces as No. 1 Freeport defeated Valley in Section 5-AA play. Lauren Lampus recorded 15 service points, four aces and seven kills. Erica Lampus recorded 17 service points, two aces and 12 digs for Freeport (9-1, 8-0).

Deer Lakes 3, Derry 0 — Renee Robson recorded 16 assists, 18 service points and eight aces as Deer Lakes defeated Derry in Section 5-AA play. Kaylee Sciubba had 10 kills, 12 service points and four blocks for Deer Lakes (6-5, 6-3).

Burrell 3, Apollo-Ridge 0 — Liv Kelly had seven digs, six kills and seven aces for Burrell (6-3, 5-3) in a Section 5-AA win. Hannah Koziarski recorded 13 assists, and Anna Novak had seven kills.

Leechburg 3, Vincectian Academy 2 — Gracie Reinke and Brenna Callahan had 14 kills apiece to help Leechburg (8-3, 7-3) rally from a 2-0 deficit and win a Section 4-A match. Leechburg lost 25-21 in each of the first two sets before winning 25-22, 25-18, 15-10 in the final three. Bev Stearman had nine kills and eight blocks for the Blue Devils.

Springdale 3, St. Joseph 0 — Becca Selzer had 13 kills to help Springdale (6-7, 3-7) sweep St. Joseph in a Section 4-A match. Gabby Yost had nine kills for the Dynamos.

Knoch 3, Central Valley 1 — Hannah Rowe had 18 kills to help Class AAA No. 1 Knoch (12-0, 10-0) earn a Section 4 win over No. 2 Central Valley. Kerrie Fitzpatrick had 34 assists and 12 service points for the Knights.

Hockey

Deer Lakes 9, Beaver 7 — Shane Miller scored four goals, including the game-winner with two and a half minutes remaining in the third period to lead Deer Lakes (1-0) to a PIHL Class A North Division win. Pietro Porco and Christopher Rudy had two goals apiece for the Lancers. Connor Hartman and Garrett McElwain both scored twice for Beaver (0-1).

Freeport 4, Blackhawk 1 — Karter Halleran, Addison Stewart, Case Haberstroh and Nico Disanti had one goal each for Freeport (0-1) in a North Division win over Blackhawk (0-1). Sean Fennell stopped 17 shots for the Yellowjackets.

Girls soccer

Freedom 6, Avonworth 1 — Jayden Sharpless had four goals and an assist as Class A No. 2 Freedom (11-1) rolled to a nonsection win.

Southmoreland 3, Derry 2 — Bailey Steban had two goals, and Mercedes Smartnick added one as Southmoreland (2-10, 1-10) won in Section 3-2A.

Megan Baker and Marissa Weimer scored and Sydney Williams had two assists for Derry (1-10, 1-8).

Seneca Valley 3, Penn- Trafford 0 — Breana Valentovish scored twice as the No. 2 Raiders (12-1) secured a nonsection win at Penn-Trafford (9-3).

Field hockey

Penn-Trafford 3, Hempfield 2 (OT) — Lauren Kelly scored in overtime to lead Penn-Trafford to a Division I victory. Kaylie Melnick and Emma Little also scored for the Warriors.
