WPIAL Class AA girls team tennis bracket set

The WPIAL Class AA girls team tennis championship bracket was released Tuesday, and Sewickley Academy and Quaker Valley begin their title quests Thursday with first-round contests.

The Panthers, the Section 4 champions with a 9-0 record, is the top seed and will host Southmoreland.

The Quakers, runners-up to Beaver Area in Section 2 with an 8-1 record, will host Winchester Thurston in the first round.

All first-round matches are slated for 3 p.m.

The quarterfinals will be Monday, and the semifinals and finals will be on dates to be determined.

The top three teams in AA will advance to the PIAA championships.

Sewickley Academy is the defending champion, and it has won five titles since 2008.

Beaver won the title in both 2015 and 2016, and Quaker Valley was crowned champion from 2004 to 2007 and again in 2010 and 2012.

Sewickley Academy boys win qualifier

The Sewickley Academy boys golf team ran away with Tuesday’s WPIAL Class AA boys team semifinal at Butler’s Woodside Golf Course in Elizabeth.

The Panthers, led by a 75 from senior Landen Shirley, finished 25 strokes better than their nearest challenger. They tallied a 390, and North Catholic took second with a team score of 415.

Carmichaels placed third (416).

Those three teams will advance to Thursday’s WPIAL team final at Cedarbrook Golf Club.

Senior Austin Applegarth (76), junior JF Aber (76), sophomore Tim Fitzgerald (81) and senior Matt Klemash (82) rounded out the Sewickley Academy top five.

The Panthers are seeking their sixth straight WPIAL team title.

At Meadowink Golf Course in Murrysville, also on Tuesday, Quaker Valley finished fourth, just outside of the top three qualifier spots.

The Quakers fired a team score of 427, and junior Aidan Bulger paced the team with an 80 for 18 holes. Senior Michael Tanabe was second with an 81.

Greensburg Central Catholic and Elizabeth Forward tied for the top spot at the Meadowink qualifier with scores of 412, while Mt. Pleasant took third (420).

Sewickley Academy girls golf set for WPIAL finals

The Sewickley Academy girls golf team, led by senior Tatum McKelvey and junior Zoe Luther, will play for a WPIAL Class AA championship Thursday at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

The Panthers, who won the title in 2014, hope to stop Greensburg Central Catholic’s three-year title streak.

The Centurions, Elizabeth Forward and Central Valley also will compete at Cedarbrook. The team champion will advance directly to the PIAA final round Oct. 24.
