High school roundup for Oct. 13, 2018: Franklin Regional boys shut out Norwin

Zack Snider and Auston Kranick scored goals to lead Franklin Regional (14-0-1) to a 2-0 nonsection win over Norwin (14-2-1) on Saturday afternoon.

The loss snapped Norwin’s seven-game winning streak. Franklin Regional has allowed only one goal over its last eight games.

Greensburg Central Catholic 2, Serra Catholic 1 (OT) — Nate Ward scored on an assist from Luke Mort, and Sean Gargan scored on a free kick/own goal as Greensburg Central Catholic (13-1, 12-0) won a Section 2-A game.

Belle Vernon 5, Southmoreland 1 — Markello Apodiakos scored twice to lead Belle Vernon (11-5-1) to a nonsection win against Southmoreland (8-8).

Obama Academy 5, Woodland Hills 0 — Reuben Swartz recorded a hat trick as Obama Academy (9-7-1) defeated Woodland Hills (3-13) in nonsection play.

Deer Lakes 3, Shady Side Academy 1— Lily Liturn scored a pair of goals, and Nina Lafko added another as Class 2A No. 3 Deer Lakes picked up a nonsection win over Shady Side Academy (8-3, 7-2). Sisters Madeline and Abigail Boulos each had an assist, and goalkeeper Gabby Weber made eight saves for Deer Lakes (14-1-1, 10-0-1).

Springdale 3, Penn Hills 1— Liliy Iadicicco scored the winner midway through the second half as Springdale downed Penn Hills in a nonsection matchup. Iadicicco gave Springdale a 1-0 lead just before halftime, and Sydni Henley added an insurance goal in the second half to pace the Dynamos (9-6, 6-4). Rylie Patterson had three saves. Katie Russell scored for Penn Hills (3-13, 2-9).

Kiski Area 2, Hampton 1 (OT) — Senior midfielder Jake Kalik beat Hampton goalkeeper Ryan Perkins from the top of the box 7 minutes into the first overtime to lift the Cavaliers to a Section 1-AAA win. The win is Kiski Area’s third straight and moves the Cavaliers into a tie with Hampton (10-6, 9-5) for second place in the section standings.

The score was tied 0-0 at halftime before the Talbots’ Corey Scherer got on the board midway through the second half.

Greg Paes tied the score a minute later. Goalkeeper Nicholas Smith and Ronnie Coleman had the assists for Kiski Area (10-6-1, 9-5). Smith made nine saves for the Cavaliers, and Perkins finished with four for Hampton.

Girls soccer

Hempfield 3, Latrobe 0 — Hempfield (5-8, 5-6) clinched the final playoff berth in Section 3-4A with a win over Latrobe (3-12, 2-9). The Spartans also lost to Kiski Area, 2-1, on Saturday.

Canon-McMillan 7, Belle Vernon 0 — Annabelle Thomas scored twice to lead Canon-McMillan (10-6-1) to a nonsection win over Belle Vernon (12-3).

Franklin Regional 2, Plum 1 In nonsection action, Franklin Regional improved to 7-7-2 with a victory over Plum (11-5).

Quigley Catholic 5, Ellis School 0 — Ashley Mineard and Taylor Kirschner scored two goals each as Quigley Catholic (8-5-2) beat Ellis School (4-10) in nonsection play.
