High school roundup for Oct. 19, 2018: Woodland Hills stays in playoff hunt

William Clark ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns as Woodland Hills kept its playoff hopes alive by beating Moon, 20-10, in a Class 5A Allegheny Conference game Friday night.

Michael Roman caught a 10-yard touchdown pass for the Wolverines (3-6, 2-4), who are tied for fifth in the conference with Baldwin and play Chartiers Valley next Friday.

Moon (2-7, 1-5) recorded two safeties.

Upper St. Clair 38, Chartiers Valley 31 — Jason Sweeney threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns as No. 5 Upper St. Clair (8-1, 5-1) held off Chartiers Valley (3-6, 0-6) in the Allegheny 8 Conference. David Pantelis caught two scoring passes and returned a punt for another in the win. Griffin Beattie threw for 142 yards and two TDs for Chartiers Valley.

Gateway 76, Connellsville 0 — Brendan Majocha threw for 272 yards and four touchdowns as top-ranked Gateway (9-0, 6-0) scored 56 points in the first half of its Big East Conference win at Connellsville (2-7, 1-5). Derrick Davis rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns while Chamor Price ran for 130 yards on two carries — touchdown runs of 68 and 62 yards.

Armstrong 41, Fox Chapel 14 — Jalen Price threw for 210 yards and a touchdown and ran for 150 yards and four TDs to lead Armstrong (4-5, 2-4) to victory against Fox Chapel (2-7, 1-5) in the Northern Conference. Armstrong can clinch a playoff berth with a win next week against Kiski Area. Shane Susnak threw for 132 yards for Fox Chapel.

Class 4A

Indiana 41, Laurel Highlands 7 — Mikail Bajwa ran for two touchdowns as Indiana (3-6, 3-3) remained in the playoff hunt by beating Laurel Highlands (3-6, 1-5) in the Big 8 Conference. Luke Thomas threw for one touchdown and ran for another in the win.

West Mifflin 53, Ringgold 0 — Playoff-bound West Mifflin (5-4, 5-1) shut out Ringgold (0-9, 0-6) in Big 8 Conference play.

Beaver 33, Montour 20 — Brodie List threw for 113 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 5 Beaver (7-2, 4-2) to the Northwest 8 win against Montour (3-6, 3-3). The Bobcats clinched a playoff berth with the win. Logan Persinger threw for 185 yards and a touchdown for Montour, which can still make the playoffs with a win at home next week against South Fayette.

South Fayette 55, Ambridge 0 — In the Northwest 8 Conference, No. 2 South Fayette (8-1, 6-0) scored 35 points in the first quarter on way to routing Ambridge (1-8, 0-6). Jamie Diven threw for four touchdowns for South Fayette, which clinched the top seed with the win.

Class 3A

Elizabeth Forward 56, Uniontown 0 — In the Big East Conference, Zachary Benedek threw for 72 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 102 yards and two more scores to lead No. 4 Elizabeth Forward (7-1, 6-1) to the shutout at Uniontown (0-9, 0-7). The Warriors led at halftime, 49-0.

Aliquippa 59, Keystone Oaks 0 — Eli Kosanovich threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns as top-ranked Aliquippa (9-0, 6-0) clinched the Tri-County West title by defeating Keystone Oaks (5-4, 2-4). William Gipson caught three passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns and ran 52 yards for another score. The loss eliminated Keystone Oaks from playoff contention.

Central Valley 31, South Park 7 — In the Tri-County West, Jesse Shively ran for two touchdowns as Central Valley (4-5, 4-2) clinched a playoff berth in its win at South Park (2-6, 2-4). Central Valley dominated time-of-possession, holding the ball for 33:18 compared to South Park’s 14:12.

Quaker Valley 49, Hopewell 0 — Dylan Moore scored on a rushing touchdown, interception return and kickoff return as Quaker Valley (4-4, 4-2) locked up a playoff berth with its Tri-County West shutout at Hopewell (2-7, 1-5). Ethan Moore added 122 passing yards and a touchdown for the Quakers.

Class 2A

Shady Side Academy 56, East Allegheny 21 — Billy Frohlich caught touchdown passes of 50 and 66 yards, scored on a 65-yard kickoff return and returned an interception 42 yards for another TD as top-ranked Shady Side Academy (8-0, 5-0) downed East Allegheny (5-4, 2-3) in Allegheny Conference play. Skyy Moore threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 174 yards and TDs of 67 and 72 yards for the Indians.

Steel Valley 48, Summit Academy 0 — Eshawn Carter caught three passes for 126 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt 64 yards for another score as No. 2 Steel Valley (7-1, 5-1) shut out Summit Academy (0-9, 0-6) in the Allegheny Conference. Kameron Williams and Todd Hill added 154 and 149 rushing yards, respectively, with each scoring two touchdowns.

Charleroi 57, Brownsville 0 — Cole Hunter Perry scored the game’s first four touchdowns as No. 4 Charleroi (7-1, 6-1) blanked Brownsville (0-9, 0-6). Charleroi clinched first place in the Century Conference with the win.

Frazier 30, Carmichaels 8 — Julian Muccioli threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns as Frazier (4-5, 3-3) kept its playoff hopes alive by defeating Carmichaels (1-7, 0-6) in Century Conference play. Muccioli added 61 rushing yards and a touchdown while teammate Shane McGavitt ran for 99 yards and two TDs. Frazier can clinch a playoff berth by defeating Beth-Center next week in its regular-season finale.

Washington 58, Southmoreland 35 — In the Class 2A Century Conference, Tayshawn Levy ran for 150 yards and three touchdowns as No. 5 Washington (8-1, 5-1) used a big second half to defeat Southmoreland (4-5, 2-5). Zack Swartz added 115 passing yards and a touchdown for Washington. Ronnie Robinson ran for 169 yards and a touchdown and teammate Zach Cernuto threw for 195 yards and three TDs for Southmoreland, which led at halftime, 20-12.

Mohawk 14, Ellwood City 0 — Nicholas Wheeler threw for 111 yards and a 63-yard touchdown to Dmitry Pendro as Mohawk (7-2, 6-1) clinched first place in the Midwestern Conference with its shutout against Ellwood City (2-7, 2-5).

New Brighton 42, Shenango 14 — In the Midwestern Conference, Jackson Hall threw for 179 yards and two touchdowns as New Brighton (4-5, 4-2) locked up a playoff berth in its win at Shenango (1-8, 0-6). Caleb Shuler caught five passes for 117 yards and a touchdown for New Brighton, which led 42-0 at halftime.

Burgettstown 27, Brentwood 0 — Jake Lounder rushed for two touchdowns as No. 3 Burgettstown (8-0, 6-0) won the Three Rivers Conference by shutting out Brentwood (4-5, 3-4). Seth Phillis added a 62-yard scoring run and field goals of 26 and 28 yards in the win.

Carlynton 21, South Allegheny 14 — Chauncey Mickens hit William Richardson-McClendon with a 63-yard touchdown pass with 1:45 left as Carlynton (2-7, 1-5) upset South Allegheny (4-5, 3-3) in the Three Rivers Conference. Mickens threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Antonio Epps ran for 96 yards and both South Allegheny touchdowns.

South Side Beaver 21, Fort Cherry 14 — Anthony Navarra ran for 144 yards and a touchdown and Jake Botkin added 128 rushing yards and two TDs as South Side Beaver (7-2, 5-2) clinched a playoff spot by beating Fort Cherry (2-7, 1-5) in the Three Rivers Conference.

Class A

OLSH 48, Union 7 — Tyler Bradley threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns as No. 4 OLSH (8-1, 6-0) clinched first place in the Big 7 Conference by defeating Union (3-6, 2-5). Richard Banks caught four passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns while teammate Rico Tate added two receptions for 110 yards and a TD. Tyler Benedict tossed for 107 yards and Union’s lone touchdown.

Avella 47, Mapletown 14 — Owen English ran for 218 yards and three touchdowns and returned a punt 60 yards for another score to lead Avella (2-7, 1-5) to the Tri-County South win at Mapletown (0-9, 0-6).

California 56, Chartiers-Houston 0 — In the Tri-County South, Jelani Stafford rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns to lead California (5-4, 5-1) to the shutout at Chartiers-Houston (3-6, 3-4). Lucas Qualk added 110 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

West Greene 50, Jefferson-Morgan 7 — Nathan Brudnock ran for two touchdowns and caught another as West Greene (6-3, 6-1) beat Jefferson-Morgan (2-7, 2-4) in the Tri-County South. Kolin Walker added two rushing touchdowns in the win.

Blackhawk 35, Beaver Falls 15 — Josh Butcher ran for 100 yards and three touchdowns to lead Class 4A No. 4 Blackhawk (8-1) to the win at Class 3A No. 5 Beaver Falls (7-2).

Greensburg Central Catholic 43, Cornell 8 — Max Pisula threw for 220 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 122 yards and two more TDs to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (6-3) over Cornell (4-4) in nonconference play. Luke Mazowiecki scored on a 49-yard punt return during the Centurions 28-point second quarter. Mazowiecki added a touchdown on a 47-yard pass from Pisula in the third quarter.

Knoch 41, Trinity 14 — Chase Mullen ran for three touchdown and threw for another to lead Knoch (4-5) over Trinity (1-7) in nonconference play. Matt Goodlin added two rushing touchdowns in the win.

McGuffey 57, Avonworth 42 — Christian Clutter rushed for 195 yards and six touchdowns to lead McGuffey (8-1) to a nonconference win against Avonworth (7-2). The Antelopes’ Jax Miller matched Clutter with six touchdowns — five rushing and one receiving — on way to running for 149 yards while teammate Derek Johncour added 247 passing yards and one TD.

Penn Hills 18, Baldwin 0 — In nonconference play, Hollis Mathis threw for 205 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 58 yards and another score as Class 5A No. 2 Penn Hills (9-0) shut out Baldwin (4-5). Tank Smith rushed for 69 yards and one touchdown for Penn Hills. Mason Stahl threw for 81 yards for Baldwin.

Penn-Trafford 42, Hampton 6 — Gabe Dunlap threw for 73 yards and a touchdown and ran for two scores to lead Penn-Trafford (7-2) to a nonconference win against Hampton (2-7).Dimitri George caught four passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors.

Rochester 27, Monessen 14 — Noah Whiteleather rushed for two touchdowns as Class A No. 5 Rochester (8-1) defeated Monessen (6-2) in nonconference play. Devin Whitlock paced Monessen with 120 rushing yards and one touchdown.

District 6

Ligonier Valley 49, Blairsville 6 — Kyrie Miller ran for 156 yards and five touchdowns as Ligonier Valley defeated Blairsville in a District 6 Heritage Conference game Friday.

John Caldwell threw for 321 yards and a touchdown, while Sam Sheeder caught seven passes for 151 yards and a touchdown for the Rams (9-0, 9-0).

City League

Allderdice 28, Perry 6 — Allderdice (5-4, 5-1) defeated Perry (3-5, 2-4) in the City League semifinals. The Dragons will face-off against Westinghouse (4-5, 3-2) in the City League championship.
