High school roundup for Oct. 20, 2018: North Allegheny girls oust defending champion Moon in 1st round

No. 7 North Allegheny scored two goals in the first half and defeated defending WPIAL and PIAA champion Moon, 2-1, in the first round of the WPIAL Class 4A girls soccer playoffs Saturday.

Emma Bundy knocked in a free kick from 25 yards out with 31:39 left in the half. Moon controlled the last 10 minutes of the half, but Ava Ruppersberger split two defenders and fired a left-footed shot in with just 20 seconds left in the half as North Allegheny (11-5) led 2-0.

Moon (11-5-2) scored on a penalty kick by Ellie Hill with 3:06 left.

North Allegheny will take on Norwin on Wednesday night in the quarterfinals, at a time and site to be determined.

Mt. Lebanon 2, Connellsville 1 — No. 8 Mt. Lebanon scored two goals in the second half to pull away and defeat No. 9 Connellsville (12-6) in the first round of the WPIAL Class 4A playoffs.

Michelle Malizio scored the tying goal with 31:05 to go in the second half, and Megan Haslett got the wining goal with 11:26 remaining. Connellsville (12-6) led at halftime 1-0 after a goal from Callie Cunningham with 2:07 remaining. Mt. Lebanon (11-5-3) will face top-seeded Seneca Valley in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Pine-Richland 9, Hempfield 0 — Fifth-seeded Pine-Richland scored early and often, putting up five first-half goals on its way to a Class 4A first-round victory.

Allie Malobicky had a hat trick and added an assist for the Rams. Alaina Kalin (2 goals, 1 assist), Caroline Swan (1 goal, 2 assists) and Megan Donnelly (2 goals) also posted multiple point efforts for Pine-Richland (15-3). Sophomore Katherine Kelly earned the shutout in goal. No. 12 Hempfield finished the season with a 7-10 record. Pine-Richland heads to the quarterfinals where it will face No. 4 Upper St. Clair on Wednesday.

Class 3A

Ambridge 2, Thomas Jefferson 1 (SO) — No. 4 Ambridge (14-2-2-) outscored Thomas Jefferson (8-11), 4-3, in penalty kicks to earn a WPIAL Class 3A first-round win.

Hampton 3, Elizabeth Forward 0 — The No. 5 Talbots (15-4) scored a WPIAL Class 3A first-round win over No. 12 Elizabeth Forward (8-9).

Hampton will play Ambridge on Wednesday.

Mars 9, Greensburg Salem 0 — Three Mars players scored two goals each as the No. 1 team in Class 3A topped No. 16 Greensburg Salem (6-12-1) in the opening round. The Fighting Planets (16-0) remain unbeaten heading into quarterfinals action Wednesday against Montour. Caroline Wroblewski, Ellie Coffield and Gracie Dunaway each scored twice.

Montour 2, Trinity 1 (SO) — Alex Gyory scored a regulation goal and a shootout goal to aid No. 9 Montour (12-6) in a Class 3A first-round victory. Courtney Dahlquist scored in regulation for No. 8 Trinity (13-4). Sarah Malinsky stopped the Hillers’ third and fourth shot attempts in the shootout, and the Spartans went 4 for 4 to seal their spot in the quarterfinals Wednesday against No. 1 seed Mars.

Oakland Catholic 2, Gateway 0 — Tori Calhoun scored the game’s first goal in the 20th minute, nudging home a loose ball after a corner kick, and Oakland Catholic’s leading goal scorer Hannah Henn picked up an insurance goal on a header in the 79th minute to lead the Eagles to a first-round win.

The shutout was the fourth straight for Oakland Catholic (15-1) and the eighth of the season for junior goalkeeper Maggie Storti.

The Eagles, who have won 15 straight matches since a season-opening loss to Seneca Valley, move into the quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

Gateway, which did not qualify for the WPIAL playoffs last season, saw its season end at 7-10-2.

South Fayette 2, Belle Vernon 1 — No. 14 South Fayette pulled off the upset of No. 3 Belle Vernon in a WPIAL Class 3A first-round matchup. South Fayette’s Helina Van Bibber scored with 34:41 remaining in the second half before Rachel Weis scored off a cross pass from Sara Meindl to make it 2-0 with 14:15 on the clock. Izzy Laurita scored the lone goal for Belle Vernon (13-4) on a penalty kick with just over 11 minutes to go in the game.

Grace Henderson made 10 saves in the loss for BVA.

South Fayette (10-6-1) moves on to face No. 6 West Allegheny Wednesday.

West Allegheny 6, Laurel Highlands 0 — No. 6 West Allegheny (12-5) rolled to a WPIAL Class 3A first-round win over No. 11 Laurel Highlands (10-8).

The Indians will play South Fayette in the quarterfinals.

Class 2A

Avonworth 3, Apollo-Ridge 0 — Ava Wert, Abigail Wert and Mia Burens scored as the No. 5 Antelopes beat No. 12 Apollo-Ridge in a Class 2A first-round game at Mars Athletic Complex. Ava Wert’s goal gave Avonworth (12-5-2) a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, while Abigail Wert and Burens added second-half scores. Miranda Chrvala made one save. Maddie Galinac stopped 13 shots for Apollo-Ridge (6-7-1), which was denied its first playoff victory.

Avonworth advances to face No. 4 Waynesburg (13-5) in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Quaker Valley 1, Brownsville 0 (OT) — Sophomore Cami Womeldorf scored the game’s only goal with 6:02 to play in overtime for No. 11 Quaker Valley (9-8) despite being outshot by No. 6 Brownsville, 15-2. The Quaker’s other shot on goal came with a little more than 3:00 left in regulation time. The Falcons finshed the season 13-5. Quaker Valley played the overtime without starters Chase Kreibel and Katherine Blaugrund and part of the overtime without starter Grace Wirth. Backstopping the shutout was sophomore Lily Johns, who just became the team’s keeper within the last week, due to injury. Quaker Valley advances to face No. 3 Deer Lakes (15-1-1) in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Class A

Bentworth 3, Vincentian Academy 1 — At Trinity, Jocelyn Timlin recorded the hat trick to lead No. 3 Bentworth (15-2) to a WPIAL Class A first-round win over No. 14 Vincentian Academy (6-6-2). Bentworth will face Bishop Canevin in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Bishop Canevin 7, Charleroi 0 — Caroline Colantonio scored four goals to lead No. 6 Bishop Canevin (11-3-1) over No. 11 Charleroi (7-7) at West Allegheny in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Bishop Canevin has won seven straight games.

Greensburg Central Catholic 6, Riverside 0 — Sam Nemeth and Tatum Gretz each scored two goals as No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic shut out No. 15 Riverside (6-7-3) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A girls soccer playoffs at Hampton. Jessica Nemeth and Sarah Orndoff also scored for Greensburg Central (11-2), which will face OLSH in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Freedom 7, Eden Christian 0 — Jayden Sharpless scored three goals and Alexsia Barlamas added two as No. 1 Freedom (17-1) won its WPIAL Class A first-round game against No. 16 Eden Christian (5-8) at Ambridge. Freedom, which has won 12 straight games, will face Springdale in Wednesday’s quarterfinal game.

OLSH 6, Beth-Center 0 — Francesca Taylor powered No. 7 OLSH (12-6) to a first-round victory with a hat trick against No. 10 Beth-Center (8-8). Four different Chargers chipped in with goals, including Ella Wrabley, Megan McCoy and Mia Crisci with a goal each.

Springdale 5, Chartiers-Houston 0 — Sydni Henley scored two second-half goals as No. 9 Springdale controlled possession for the majority of the match and defeated No. 8 Chartiers-Houston (10-9).

Lilly Iadicicco and Jade Vrabel scored just 92 seconds apart in the middle of the first half for the Dynamos. Henley’s two goals came less than two minutes apart. Jaden Domaratz finished the scoring in the 72nd minute.

Springdale (11-6) advances to the quarterfinals against top-seeded Freedom on Wednesday.

Seton LaSalle 3, Serra Catholic 1 — Mikaela Small scored at the 22nd and 27th minute of the first half as No. 4 Seton LaSalle (10-4-2) defeated No. 13 Serra Catholic (8-7) in the WPIAL Class A first round at Mt. Lebanon.

Serra Catholic cut the lead to one in the second half as junior Madison Carr scored her 30th of the season and 74th of her high school career in the 48th minute. However, Rebels’ senior Vanessa Peretin scored in 52nd minute to seal the win.

Seton LaSalle goalkeeper junior Rebecca Crawford made seven saves on the eight shots she faced. Seton LaSalle outshot Serra Catholic, 20-12, and earned six corners compared to two for the Eagles. The Rebels will play Shady Side Academy in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.

Shady Side Academy 8, South Side Beaver 0 — Sophia McMahon, Melissa Riggins and Krystyna Rytel all scored two goals as No. 5 Shady Side Academy (10-3) won its WPIAL Class A first-round matchup over South Side Beaver (8-8-2) at Hampton.
