After helping the Sewickley Academy girls tennis team capture the PIAA Class AA team championship last Saturday, team members Simran Bedi, Victoria Keller and Alina Mattson return to the Hershey Racquet Club this weekend for the state singles and doubles tournaments.

Bedi, a sophomore and the WPIAL runner-up, will take on Westmont Hilltop freshman Alyssa Kush, the District 6 champion, in the singles first round Friday at 8:30 a.m.

The quarterfinals are Friday at 3 p.m., and the semifinals and finals are Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

Keller and Mattson, the third-place doubles team from the WPIAL, drew the District 9 champion combination of sophomore Lilia Lion and freshman Davan Lion from St. Mary’s Area. That first-round match in the doubles tournament will be Friday at 10 a.m.

This is Mattson’s final opportunity at states as she is a senior, while Keller is a sophomore.

The doubles quarterfinals will be at 3 p.m. Friday, with the semifinals and finals set for Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

QV boys soccer rolls into finals

The Quaker Valley boys soccer team has tallied a combined 15 goals in its Class AA playoff victories over Freeport, Mt. Pleasant and Charleroi.

Monday’s 5-0 shutout of No. 4 Charleroi in the semifinals propelled the Quakers into the finals for the third year in a row.

QV, the 2017 WPIAL runner-up and the defending PIAA AA champion, will face No. 11 Shady Side Academy in the championship game Saturday at 1:15 p.m. at Highmark Stadium.

The title clash is a rematch of last year’s finals match won by the Indians 3-2 in overtime.

The Quakers head into the game 18-3 overall. Regardless of Saturday’s outcome, QV will enter the PIAA playoffs starting Tuesday.

Quakers football team gears up for North Catholic

Before the Quaker Valley boys soccer team can play for a WPIAL championship, the Quakers football team will begin their own postseason tournament.

Eight teams have been positioned in 3A, and sixth-seeded QV (5-4) will take on No. 3 North Catholic (9-1) in the quarterfinals Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Stone Field in North Park.

The Quakers finished as the No. 3 team in the Tri-County West Conference behind top-seeded Aliquippa and No. 4 Beaver Falls.

North Catholic finished in a three-way tie for the Big East title with Elizabeth Forward and Derry.

The 3A title game will be Nov. 17 at Heinz Field.
