As we turn the calendar to November, we begin the process of crowning district soccer champions at Highmark Stadium at Station Square in Pittsburgh.

The first of eight championship matches this weekend are Thursday with the boys Class A and Class AAA title matches.

Greensburg Central Catholic squares off against Avonworth at 6 p.m.

The Antelopes are in search of their first WPIAL soccer crown while the Centurions are trying to win their fourth crown and first title since 2009.

In the Class 3A finals at 8 p.m., West Allegheny takes on Franklin Regional in a battle of the top two seeds.

The Panthers have never won a boys district soccer championship while the Indians shoot for their second pitch gold after winning it all in 2013.

Both of these matches and all eight title games this weekend can be watched live on the TribLive High School Sports Network.

Playing for a PIAA berth

As the finals start Thursday, the district will have three consolation boys soccer matches with the season on the line for six teams.

A spot in the state soccer playoffs is up for grabs in consolation matches in Class AAA, AA and A as teams that lost in the semifinals try to regroup to keep their seasons alive.

Two of the matches are at Moon where Deer Lakes faces Charleroi in Class AA, followed by Mars taking on Thomas Jefferson in AAA.

The Class A consolation match is at North Allegheny and pits Seton LaSalle against Springdale.

Volleyball semifinals

The championship field in WPIAL girls’ volleyball in Class AAA and AA will be finalized Thursday with four semifinals matches.

At North Allegheny, defending champion Knoch will face Central Valley in a Class AAA third-round match, while North Catholic faces Serra Catholic in a Class AA semifinals contest.

The other two semifinal matches are at Norwin where Class AA top seed Freeport faces Frazier, followed by Thomas Jefferson against Elizabeth Forward in Class AAA.

All four girls volleyball semifinals matches can be heard at TribHSSN.TribLive.com.
