Shady Side Academy’s Dino Tomlin commits to Maryland

Less than a week after Maryland fired its football coach, Shady Side Academy’s Michael “Dino” Tomlin announced his commitment to the Terrapins on Tuesday.

Tomlin revealed his decision on Twitter.

“It was a combination of both academics and athletics,” Shady Side coach Chuck DiNardo said. “He likes the idea of playing on the big stage in the Big 10, and he felt very comfortable in their business school as well.”

Tomlin could not be reached. He joins a program that recently fired coach DJ Durkin and promoted Matt Canada to acting head coach.

“I think (the commitment) says he felt very comfortable with how their athletic department handled that whole situation,” DiNardo said.

Tomlin, the son of Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, is one of the top wide receiver recruits in the WPIAL. The senior held more than a dozen Division 1 offers. His list included FBS schools Pitt, Army, Texas-San Antonio and Toledo, along with Duquesne, Robert Morris, Albany, Columbia, Dartmouth, Fordham, Holy Cross, Howard, William & Mary and Yale.

Maryland offered him in late August.

Tomlin (6-0, 170) has 18 touchdowns this season for Shady Side Academy (10-0), the top seed in the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs. He also has 644 receiving yards on 18 receptions.

He won a state hurdles title last spring.
