WPIAL baseball playoffs

Class 2A

Semifinals

6-Riverview (14-6) vs. 2-Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (14-7)

4 p.m. Thursday at Peterswood Park

Winner plays: Winner of 8-Freedom (12-7)/12-Laurel (10-10) in the championship game May 27 or 28 at EQT Park (time TBA)

Players to watch: Rece Sempfer, Riverview; Dean Douglass, OLSH

Extra bases: Thursday’s game originally was scheduled for Wednesday, but rain forced the WPIAL to move all games one day. The semifinal is a rematch of a pair of Section 3 contests won by OLSH, 4-0 and 4-3, late in the regular season. The victories helped the Chargers claim the section title. Riverview and OLSH also played in last year’s quarterfinals, and the Chargers claimed a 1-0 win at Seneca Valley. OLSH and Riverview both are seeking their first WPIAL baseball titles. … The Raiders will play a WPIAL semifinal game for the first time since 2021 when they advance to the Class A title game at Wild Things Park. Riverview snapped a three-game quarterfinal losing streak with a 2-1 victory Tuesday over No. 3 Burgettstown at North Allegheny. Sophomore Lukas Duncan was the star for the Raiders. He pitched a complete-game four-hitter with nine strikeouts against one walk. He now is 6-1 this season. Duncan also singled and scored one of Riverview’s two runs in the fourth inning. Senior Stempfer delivered one of the Raiders’ biggest hits of the season as his two-RBI double in the same inning proved to be the difference. Sophomore Rex Roberts had a team-best two hits — both singles — in the victory. … OLSH, after beating Riverview in last year’s quarterfinals, was upended in the semifinals by Seton LaSalle. The Chargers improved to 14-7 with an 8-0 victory over New Brighton on Tuesday at North Allegheny. The win avenged a loss to the Lions from the regular season. Iseia Schultz, like Duncan, threw a complete game to help lead OLSH to its quarterfinal victory. He struck out 10 and helped his cause with a single and an RBI. Douglass went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, and Gino Williams had two hits and two runs scored.
