Here’s a look at the don’t-miss matchups for Week 6 in the A-K Valley:
Class 5A Big East
Latrobe (2-4, 1-2) at Kiski Area (2-4, 1-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Richard J. Dilts Stadium, Allegheny Township
Last week: Woodland Hills 33, Latrobe 9; Kiski Area 14, Franklin Regional 7
Last year’s meeting: Kiski Area 36, Latrobe 13
Latrobe dropped its second straight conference game as the offense was only able to muster three field goals by Mitch Horner (38, 34 and 33 yards). Dom Scarton completed 14 of 20 passes for 137 yards in the setback. … Kiski Area gave first-year coach Colyn Haugh, a Franklin Regional alum, his first conference win as Aven Shirley ran for 152 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. He also threw a TD pass to Teegan Shirley. The victory broke a four-game losing streak. … Kiski Area holds a 32-10 lead against Latrobe in the all-time series that dates to 1962 when both were members of the original Foothills Conference. Latrobe’s only WPIAL title came against Kiski Area, 19-7, in 1968. It was the final WPIAL title game held at Forbes Field. … With both teams tied for fifth place in the Big East with only two conference games left after Friday, the loser will be all but mathematically eliminated from the postseason.
Class 5A Northeast
North Hills (1-5, 1-1) at Plum (2-4, 0-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Mustangs Stadium, Plum
Last week: Norwin 21, North Hills 17; Penn-Trafford 33, Plum 14
Last year’s meeting: North Hills 21, Plum 14
North Hills started 0-4 before defeating Fox Chapel in Week 4 in the Northeast Conference. Against Norwin last week, QB Kelly McCarthy threw for 118 yards and two touchdowns, and Andrew Greenland booted a 38-yard field goal. Jack Broderick caught an 80-yard TD pass. … The Mustangs are looking to snap a three-game losing streak after starting 2-1. Austin Kolankowski booted two field goals last week, and Semaj Robinson caught a 30-yard TD pass from Antonio Hanzlik. Plum’s running game was stymied by the Penn-Trafford defense. … North Hills leads the all-time series 4-2. Plum won in 1991 and 2015.
Class 4A Greater Allegheny
Knoch (0-6, 0-1) at No. 3 Mars (5-1, 1-0)
7 p.m. Friday, Mars Athletic Complex, Mars
Last week: Indiana 21, Knoch 14; Mars 46, West Mifflin 0
Last year’s meeting: Mars 42, Knoch 7
Knoch came up just short in its Greater Allegheny Conference opener last week as Max Wiley and Carter Beres scored on short touchdown runs. The Knights will try for their first victory this week but will have to score more than their 8.3 average points per game to knock off the No. 3-ranked Fightin’ Planets. … Ayden Yocum shined for Mars last week, rushing for 253 yards and four scores on 31 carries. Mars is averaging 25.5 ppg while allowing 11.6. … Mars holds a 29-11 lead in the all-time series. The last Knights win was a 21-10 decision in 2017. The rivalry dates to 1957 when both schools were members of the old Butler County League in PIAA District 9.
Class 3A Allegheny 7
Valley (0-6, 0-2) at Burrell (2-4, 1-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Buccaneer Stadium, Lower Burrell
Last week: Freeport 42, Valley 7; Burrell 29, East Allegheny 28
Last year’s meeting: Burrell 15, Valley 6
The Battle of the Bypass between Burrell and Valley is now the most uninterrupted rivalry in the A-K Valley, playing for the 46th consecutive season. … Burrell is looking to maintain good standing in the Allegheny Conference after last week’s one-point victory, sealed by a 42-yard TD run by Antonio Perkins and subsequent PAT by Trey Coury. The pair combined to rush for more than 300 yards and four scores. … Valley was unable to keep up with conference-leading Freeport last week. Juzef Betts scored on a 10-yard run. The Vikings defense will need to be stouter this week and lower its average of 40.6 points allowed per game. … Valley leads the all-time series 25-20, but the Bucs have won the last six games.
Class 2A Allegheny
No. 4 Steel Valley (4-2, 2-0) at Apollo-Ridge (4-2, 2-0)
7 p.m. Friday, Owens Field, Apollo
Last week: Steel Valley 42, Shady Side Academy 6; Apollo-Ridge 27, OLSH 12
Last year’s meeting: Steel Valley 55, Apollo-Ridge 10
Steel Valley is riding a three-game winning streak after outscoring South Park, Waynesburg and Shady Side Academy a combined 132-13. Pitt recruit Da’Ron Barksdale is one of the WPIAL’s most dynamic players. He ran for 139 yards and two scores in last week’s win. The Ironmen also got a 39-yard fumble return for a score from Jayvon Roberts and a 24-yard blocked punt return for a TD by J’Von Barlow. … Apollo-Ridge also is riding a three-game winning streak after starting 1-2. Wins over Carlynton, Shady Side Academy and OLSH upped the Vikings’ average to 24.8 ppg. … Both teams are working to stay atop the conference standings with South Allegheny (6-0, 3-0). QB Alexander Clawson threw for 114 yards and a score, and Jaden McCray had a TD run and TD reception last week. Preston Clemens’ 32-yard interception return sealed the victory. … Steel Valley holds a 7-1 advantage in the series. The Vikings won in the covid-abbreviated 2020 season.
Class A Eastern
Frazier (3-3, 1-2) at Leechburg (4-1, 2-0)
7 p.m. Friday, Veterans Memorial Field, Leechburg
Last week: Frazier 28, Brentwood 21; Leechburg DNP
Last year’s meeting: Leechburg 62, Frazier 16
Frazier bounced back from a 72-0 loss to Clairton with an Eastern Conference win last week. QB Brady Secrest threw for 90 yards and three touchdowns, and Derek Diamond ran for 295 yards on 43 carries. Leechburg did not play last week after Springdale had to postpone the matchup because of a lack of healthy players. The Blue Devils will lean on the running of Tim Andrasy, who is second in the WPIAL with 1,037 rushing yards and fourth with 17 touchdowns. … Leechburg has a 4-3 series lead. The Blue Devils are seeking their fifth consecutive WPIAL playoff berth, an extension of the school record.
Riverview (4-2, 2-1) at Brentwood (2-4, 1-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Brentwood Park, Brentwood
Last week: Riverview 26, Greensburg C.C. 7; Frazier 28, Brentwood 21
Last year’s meeting: Brentwood 42, Riverview 35
Riverview is seeking its first three-game winning streak since beating Springdale to end the 2022 season and defeating Beth-Center and Carlynton to start 2023. The last time Riverview won three straight in the same season was the final games in the 2015 campaign. Riverview’s balanced offense has produced 33 ppg this season, while the defense is holding teams to 17 ppg. RB Kaden Levy ran for 75 yards and two scores last week, Rio Stotts ran for 47 yards and Miles Duncan rushed for 97 yards. QB Connor Kmetz threw for 47 yards and a TD. … After starting 2-2, Brentwood has dropped back-to-back games. QB Cedrick Davis Jr. threw for 141 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score last week. His top targets are Daysaun Spencer and Orlando Johnson. … Brentwood holds an 11-10-1 lead in the all-time series. The last Raiders victory was 12-6 in 2009. The 8-8 tie came in 1980. … The Raiders first played Brentwood in their inaugural 1971 season with the Spartans winning 22-20.
Springdale (0-4, 0-2) at No. 2 Clairton (4-1, 3-0)
7 p.m. Friday, Tyler Boyd Stadium, Clairton
Last week: Clairton 57, Jeannette 0; Springdale DNP
Last year’s meeting: Clairton 70, Springdale 0
Springdale will try to get on the field this week after having to postpone its game against Leechburg last Friday because of a lack of healthy players. The Dynamos have allowed 45.7 points per game this season. … Clairton is the WPIAL’s highest-scoring team at 52.6 points per game. The Bears also allow just 3.8 points defensively, also tops in the district. Last week against Jeannette, QB Jeff Thompson threw for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Donte Wright scored on a TD run, a TD pass and an interception return. … Clairton leads the all-time series 33-3. The last Dynamos win was in the 2007 WPIAL semifinals, 22-21 on a 2-point conversion with time nearly expired.
Nonconference
Deer Lakes (1-5) at Beaver (3-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Pat Tarquinio Field, Beaver
Last week: Highlands 35, Deer Lakes 0; Beaver 42, McGuffey 6
Last year’s meeting: Beaver 42, Deer Lakes 0
Deer Lakes has had trouble winning in Beaver County. The Lancers last won a game on Beaver County soil in 2001 with a 35-21 victory at Ellwood City. Deer Lakes’ loss to Beaver last season spilled the Lancers from the unbeaten ranks. The Bobcats have won four of five previous games against the Lancers, with Deer Lakes recording a 14-13 victory in 1996. The Lancers have lost five straight games after a season-opening win at Keystone Oaks. Last week, QB Dante Mangieri was held to 38 passing yards and three interceptions. Running backs Ryan Love and Roman Smith were held to 45 yards on 17 carries. … Beaver is looking to maintain momentum ahead of a final stretch of Western Hills Conference games against North Catholic, at Quaker Valley and at Avonworth. Last week, Beaver’s running game produced six touchdowns — three from Avery Scales, two by Jax Weiss and another from Jonah Justice. … Beaver ranks 11th in WPIAL football victories with a record of 682-427-55 (.615) since inaugurating the sport in 1899.
Fox Chapel (2-4) at Franklin Regional (0-6)
7 p.m. Friday, Panther Stadium, Murrysville
Last week: Pine-Richland 63, Fox Chapel 3; Kiski Area 14, Franklin Regional 7
Last year’s meeting: Franklin Regional 51, Fox Chapel 14
A matchup of teams looking for answers five weeks into the season. … Fox Chapel originally requested to play shortened quarters last week against Pine-Richland but still lost by 60 points. The Foxes are allowing 38.3 points per game. Standout kicker Harran Zureikat, a Georgia commit, made a 54-yard field goal. … Franklin Regional slid to its first 0-6 start in 25 years. The Panthers, hit hard by injuries, have lost seven in a row overall. They are allowing 30.3 points. Eli Chadwick caught a touchdown pass from Dom Devola last week. … Franklin Regional leads the all-time series 9-12-1, with a scoreless tie coming in 1985. The series dates to 1980.
