player of the week
Colt Sprankle
Knoch, jr., QB/DB
The Knights didn’t get the results they were hoping for in a Week Zero loss to Kiski Area, but their fortunes turned around last Friday when they returned to the field. Sprankle was a main cog in the engine that produced a 28-17 victory over North Catholic. The transfer from Armstrong completed 11 of 16 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown to senior Codi Mullen. He added seven carries for 61 yards and a score. Sprankle and his Knoch teammates hope to keep the winning going as they continue early-season nonconference play Friday at Fox Chapel.
players to watch
Trey Coury
Burrell, so., RB/DB
Coury has been the workhorse in the Bucs’ well-known run-first offense. Last Friday, in a tough loss to Shady Side Academy, Coury broke the century mark for the first time as he totaled 132 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. He hopes to be a factor against this week at Mt. Pleasant.
Joey Geller
Fox Chapel, jr., QB/DB
Geller shared No. 1 quarterback reps in the offseason as he prepared to help lead the Foxes into the 2024 season. Fox Chapel passed just 11 times in Friday’s 38-7 victory over Baldwin that snapped a 22-game losing streak. But Geller was efficient as he completed 5 of his 6 passes for 109 yards while adding a pair of rushing touchdowns.
Connor Kmetz
Riverview, so., QB/DB
Kmetz delivered right away for the Raiders in their season-opening victory last Friday at Valley as he connected with Rio Stotts for a 19-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Kmetz, making his varsity debut under center, went on to add a pair of passing TDs in the second quarter of the 38-36 triumph. Kmetz completed all nine of his passes for 125 yards.
