Player of the week
Antonio Perkins
Burrell, So., QB/S
Perkins had his hands and feet stamped all over the Bucs’ 28-21 win over Mt. Pleasant last Friday. He rushed for 162 yards on 16 carries, an average of 10 yards per attempt, and scored all four touchdowns. Perkins completed 13 of 18 passes, including his final seven throws, for 157 yards. He also shined on defense with a team-leading 10 tackles. He added an interception in the final minute as the Vikings attempted to tie the score. Perkins and his Burrell teammates hope to make it two victories in a row this week as they visit Derry (2-1) for a final tune-up before the start of Allegheny 7 Conference play.
Players to watch
Alex Clawson
Apollo-Ridge, Sr., QB/DB
The Vikings conclude nonconference play Friday at home against Carlynton, and Clawson will have a lot to say about his team’s efforts to get back to .500 after consecutive losses to Jeannette and Greensburg Central Catholic. Clawson has shown his dual-threat tendencies over the first three weeks of the season with 722 yards of total offense with five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing).
Max Melocchi
Fox Chapel, Sr., WR/HB/LB
The Carnegie Mellon commit moved from quarterback to wide receiver and halfback in the offseason, and he is making opposing defenses take notice with his athleticism and catching ability. In last week’s win over Knoch, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound target caught five passes from quarterback Joey Gellar for 165 yards and two touchdowns, which helped the Foxes win 20-18 to improve to 2-1 on the young season.
Semaj Robinson
Plum, So., RB/WR/DB
Having a breakout season so far in the Plum offense, Robinson has become a reliable go-to pass catcher for Mustangs quarterback John Nonnenberg. He finished Friday’s 23-14 win at rival Gateway with three big catches for 88 yards. He had two 19-yard grabs, but the biggest of the night came in the third quarter to extend a tenuous three-point halftime advantage. Robinson hauled in a catch over the middle and took it 50 yards to the end zone for a score that put Plum up 16-7.
