Player of the week
Danny King
Freeport, Jr., QB/WR
The Yellowjackets had numerous contributors to last Friday’s 58-7 dismantling of rival Deer Lakes, and King played a big part in helping his team improve to 4-0. King returned an interception 62 yards with 45 seconds left until halftime. The score was part of a 21-point run over the final 1:07 of the half. He then added to the Freeport lead with a 42-yard pick-6 with 6:30 left in the third quarter. King, who also intercepted a pass in the Week 2 rout of Quaker Valley, hopes to make his presence felt in all aspects this Friday at Burrell as Freeport looks to go to 5-0 for the first time since 1990.
Players to watch
Landyn Artman
Kiski Area, So., QB/DB
Artman showed his dual-threat skills in Friday’s 34-31 loss to Gateway in the Big East opener for both teams. He threw for 170 yards and four touchdowns, including an 18-yard strike to Teagan Shirley and a 31-yard connection to Aven Shirley as the Cavaliers attempted to rally in the fourth quarter. Artman added 14 carries for 73 yards for Kiski Area, which will look to snap a three-game losing streak Friday at Penn-Trafford.
Hobbes Omecinski
Burrell, Jr., QB/LB
The Burrell and Derry defenses made a number of key plays in what turned out to be a low-scoring Trojans 13-7 victory last Friday. Omecinski was at the heart of the Bucs’ effort. He finished among the team leaders with 10 tackles, and he is second only to Weston Baronie in total tackles (27) through four games. Baronie leads the way with 29. Omecinski hopes to again make an impact Friday as Burrell (1-3) opens Allegheny 7 Conference play at home against rival Freeport (4-0).
Jah’mar Wright
Highlands, Sr., WR/DB
The Golden Rams snapped a mini two-game losing skid with a 42-15 win Friday over East Allegheny in its Allegheny 7 Conference opener. Wright, a veteran presence on offense and defense, put his kick return talents on display early against the Wildcats. He helped set the tone by returning the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. The score, Wright’s first of the season, sparked the Golden Rams to a 28-0 first-quarter lead.
