Player of the week
Amos Glenn
Freeport, Sr., RB/DB
Glenn was again a workhorse for a Yellowjackets team that moved to 5-0 for the first time since 1990 with a 34-7 win Friday at rival Burrell. He rushed 23 times for 194 yards and four touchdowns. His 24-yard scamper in the second quarter added to Freeport’s lead, and he produced another 24-yard scoring run in the third quarter to put the Yellowjackets up 20-0. After Burrell got on the board in the fourth quarter, Glenn helped finish off the victory with additional TD runs of 15 and 39 yards. For the season, Glenn has collected 555 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 76 attempts. He also has six catches for 88 yards and a score and has both a punt return and kickoff return for touchdowns.
Players to watch
Weston Baronie
Burrell, Sr., OL/DE
Bucs coach Dom Girardi said Baronie was a little banged up prior to last Friday’s Allegheny 7 Conference game with Freeport and was questionable to play. But Baronie was on the field against the Yellowjackets, and he made his presence felt with eight tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. He is tied for the team lead in tackles (37) through five games, and he hopes to add to that total this week as Burrell (1-4, 0-1) travels to East Allegheny.
Preston Clemens
Apollo-Ridge, So., RB/LB
Clemens continues to gain stature within the Apollo-Ridge offense. In last week’s Allegheny Conference win over Shady Side Academy, he led a group of seven ball carriers with 10 attempts for 79 yards. He had a top run of 16 yards as the Vikings’ run game collected 200 yards on 42 rushes. Clemens hopes to be a factor again as Apollo-Ridge goes for a third straight win Saturday night at OLSH.
Rio Stotts
Riverview, Sr., ATH
As the run-heavy Raiders continue to develop more and more rushing options, Stotts continues to produce as a dependable cog in the machine. He made his presence known a number of times in last Friday’s win over Springdale. That included on the scoreboard as his 51-yard TD run in the second quarter extended an already sizeable Riverview lead. Stotts again will look to make an impact Saturday as Riverview hosts Eastern Conference rival Greensburg Central Catholic.
