It was a magical day for Marianne Abdalah of Vincentian Academy in the rain and mud at Cooper’s Lake Campground. The senior became one of only two runners in WPIAL history to win the individual championship in each of her four years. The Royals also placed three others in the top ten to run away with the 1-A team championship by a wide margin.
Abdalah opened up a ten second lead over Jeanne Lauer of Shady Side Academy in between the first and second mile and maintained her lead the rest of the course to claim a 13 second win. Abdalah had missed most of this season with a shin injury and did not start competing again late September. She said that she had lost some confidence while recovering from the injury but said it was starting to come back with the win today.
In the 2-A race, it was the Quaker Valley show as the Quakers navigated a heavy rain at the start and ran away with their third straight championship. QV placed three runners in the top six, including race winner Anna Pawlowski.
The senior opened up a lead in the opening mile to claim a 16 second win over another senior Mica Hanish of Ambridge. Pawlowski said the rain was not as much of a factor as the wind, which felt like it was pushing back when the runners were headed uphill. Pawlowski added that the Cooper’s Lake course is not one of her favorites, she will get a chance to run on her favorite course in Hershey for the PIAA Championships.
Clara Savchik of North Allegheny dominated the 3-A race, beating last year’s champion Lauren Finikiotis of Oakland Catholic by 68 seconds. The junior posted a 5:48 opening mile and opened her lead to cruise to the win.
It was a great day for the Eagles despite the individual loss as they easily won the team title, ending Seneca Valley’s two year reign. Oakland Catholic had 39 points, Fox Chapel had 121 and North Allegheny 130. The Raiders ended up fifth and did not qualify for the PIAA meet.
