Wanting to spend more time with his family — his wife, Abbie, and young son, Niko — Jake Rice stepped down as boys soccer coach at Latrobe after four seasons.
“A couple of in-house parent issues made me realize I should spend more time with my own kid and less time with other people’s kids,” Rice said.
Rice, 27, helped Latrobe go farther than any team in program history last year when the Wildcats won their first section title and first WPIAL playoff game, while tying a school record for wins in a season with 13.
He made the playoffs three times, including this season. Latrobe finished 8-10.
Overall, Rice was 40-29-1.
“I think I made a positive impact on the program,” he said. “When I took over, we weren’t very good, and we’ve since accomplished a lot.”
Rice was pleased with the progress of his a senior group he knew from the start.
“I really enjoyed the group I coached the last four years,” Rice said. “I coached (the senior class) all four years and really relied on a lot of those guys, so it’s nice to go out with them.”
