It’s been seven years since Albert Gallatin played a WPIAL schedule in the Class 5A Big East conference. Since moving out of the WPIAL and into an independent schedule in 2019, consistency has been the goal of coach Drew Dindl.

The Colonials have had at least five wins in four of their six seasons as an independent. The consistency has been better under Dindl as they try to regain more confidence this season.

“We have a solid crew that has been at practices and offseason workouts consistently,” Dindl said. “We have 38 kids that are on the roster this season.”

Last year was a good one for Albert Gallatin. The Colonials went 6-3, and many of the key performers are returning to the mix for 2025.

As a team, their strength resounds with a potent rushing attack. Last season, they rushed for 3,330 yards with contributions coming from multiple ball carriers. They lost their No. 1 rusher Caleb DeHaven, who had 1,044 rushing yards on only 60 carries last season, to graduation.

The replacements, Adam Pegg and Tee Guesman, combined to rush for over 1,000 yards, showing the elite depth that they have at the position.

“We’re hopefully going to try and keep the momentum going for this season,” Dindl said. “We have a couple tough running backs.”

Leading the offensive line in paving the way for the running attack is JJ Perrine, who will serve as a team captain once again after also filling the role last season as a junior.

Discipline is one of the core values that Dindl pushes to his players as they go through the summer workouts. It’s all about making sure everyone is ready for the season ahead.

“The discipline for our team is the most important thing,” Dindl said. “We don’t have a lot of guys on the roster, so we preach going game speed through all the drills.”

On a team where most players play both sides of the ball, developing more and more depth is always something to work on. Younger players are relied upon more for a team that doesn’t have a lot of backup options.

“We need to work on our depth and hopefully get some young guys as ready as possible,” Dindl said. “Guys know where they are supposed to be on the field, and the playbook is looking pretty good right now.”

Dindl is a former offensive lineman who graduated from Albert Gallatin and then played at the collegiate level for Waynesburg. He understands that the love isn’t always flowing for the lineman, and he tries to give them their props when he notices it.

“I have two really good offensive line coaches who take care of most of it,” Dindl said. “Any time they do something really good, I try to get them recognized as much as possible.”

Albert Gallatin opens up the season at home against Greensburg Salem. The Colonials will look to avenge a 28-6 loss to the Golden Lions to open the 2024 season.
